Lady Wave Looking to Make Strides in SWD

Grundy has set reasonable goals and made small, but significant strides in its softball program the last few years, and six seniors have been there to take each step.
The Lady Wave hope to forge their first winning record in several years and move up in the Southwest District standings, and they have the experience and pitching to make it happen.
Senior pitcher Amber Foster is one of several key players for Grundy, which went 7-8 overall and made the SWD tournament again last season.
The Lady Wave will also rely heavily on five other seniors. Samantha Rice shares shortstop and pitching duties with Foster, while Amy Crouse returns behind the plate.

Lady Wave softball coach

Sarah Davis is back at second base, Terri Stacy returns at third and Tasha McGlothlin will again patrol right field.

“We have a team with six seniors,” Grundy coach Anthony Church said. “They’ve been through some ups and downs.

“They’ve made the SWD tournament the last three years and they want to make it four straight. Having a winning season is our main goal. We want to finish above .500 and be competitive in our district.”
The leading returning hitters for the Lady Wave are Stacy, who hit .302 last season, Rice (.298) and Davis, who stole 12 bases. Foster, who has earned All-SWD honors the past two seasons, is another key reason for Grundy’s optimism.
“As long as Amber can throw strikes and keep us in ballgames, we’re in business,” Church added.

Juniors Kayla Viers and Holly Childress have experience at fist base, while sophomore Molly Doud returns in center field. Freshmen Misty Charles and Carlie Bishop should also see time in the outfield.

Council's Justin Boyd Makes Cobra History in Tossing Perfect Game to Shut Out Grundy, 10-0

Justin Boyd made Council history Thursday at the expense of another county team.
Boyd threw a five-inning perfect game as Council shut out Grundy, 10-0, in non-district action Thursday afternoon.

Council, meanwhile, fell to 2-1 overall with a 22-0 beating at the hands of Chilhowie Monday afternoon at Willie Sullivan Field.

Justin Boyd’s gem is believed to be the first perfect game for Council since Kenny Bostic threw one in a 10-0 win over Whitewood in 1974.

The senior righthander struck out nine Grundy batters and never allowed a ball out of the infield. Boyd got a pair of key defensive plays from second baseman Corey Barton. Boyd and first baseman Ethan Ball also collaborated on a key 1-3 putout in the fourth inning.

The Cobras (2-1) took advantage of 11 walks issued by two Grundy pitchers and key hits by Shannon Breeding and freshman catcher Matt Boyd.

Breeding was 2-3 with three RBIs, including an RBI \ single in the bottom of the fifth that ended the game under the 10-run mercy rule. Matt Boyd had a three-run double in the fifth.
On Monday, Chilhowie scored 14 runs and sent 19 batters to the plate in the second inning to crush the Cobras, who committed nine errors in the contest.
Seven players got at least two hits for Chilhowie, which was picked to beat out John Battle this spring in the Hogoheegee District.

Winning pitcher Cody Haga had three hits for the Warriors, who had five hitters drive in two or more runs. First baseman Adam Clampitt hit a home run and had four RBIs for the Warriors.
