Nobie Clarel McClanahan
(Grundy)

  Nobie Clarel Looney McClanahan, 90, of Grundy, died Friday, March 23, 2007 at the home of her daughter, Vicki Van Meter,  following an extended illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late William and Louisa Caraway Looney. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County,  a member of Harman Memorial Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband,  Hatler G. McClanahan, October 25, 1994; one son, Earl Ray McClanahan; two sisters, Margie Stiltner and Elizabeth Westbury; and three brothers, Meredith O., Charles V. and Jack Looney.
  She is survived by two daughters, Vicki,  and husband H.C. Van Meter        of Vansant and Wanda, and husband, Jimmy Baker of Grundy; one son, Jackie, and wife, Barbara McClanahan of Grundy; one sister, Shola Slone of Roanoke; one sister-in-law, Shirley Looney of Tazewell; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Tuesday, March 27 at Grundy Funeral Home with Minister Shea Shrader officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Active pallbearers were Billy Raines, Rick Edwards, Chris Runyon, Gary Runyon, David McClanahan, Jeff Coleman, Frankie Landreth and Ronnie Stiltner.
  Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Louise Conley
(Grundy)

  Louise Webb Conley, 84, of Grundy, died Saturday, March 24, 2007 at Cambridge House Nursing Home, Bristol, TN, following an extended illness.
  Born in Betsy Lane, KY, she was the daughter of the late E.J. and Flora Wiley Webb. She was a resident of Buchanan County most of her life and a member of Big Rock Church of Christ. She worked for 27 years in Big Rock for Buchanan Coal Company Store. She had also been employed at the former Piggly Store in Grundy for 13 years. She was a lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion Post No. 164, Grundy, and was once named "Woman of the Year."
  In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward C. Conley; two sisters, Beulah Warf and Donrita Matney Looney; and four brothers, Donald, Bobby, Jimmy and Eugene Webb.
  She is survived by one brother, Ronnie, and wife, Kathryn Webb, of Mooresville, NC; several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Wednesday, March 28 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evg. Sam Casebolt officiating. Entombment followed in Mountain Rest Mausoleum, Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Active pallbearers were family and friends.

Bill Monroe Smith
(Hurley)

  Bill Monroe Smith, 56, of Hurley, died Sunday, March 25, 2007 at Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy following a brief illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Dewey Hassell and Mary Jane Blankenship Smith. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and attended Bethel Baptist Church. He was a retired coal miner.
  He is survived by his wife, Marie Justus Smith; one daughter, Janie Smith Johnson of Hurley; two step-daughters, Sharon and husband, Gary Shafer and Sherry and husband, Danny Estep, all of Hurley; two step-sons, Buddy and wife, Debby Gibson of Bloomingdale, IL and Billy Gibson of Franklin Park, IL; three sisters, Marie and husband, Stewart Justus, of Hurley, Sue and husband, Rocky Justice and Fern and husband, Arnold Justice, all of Panther, WV; one brother, Dewey Hassell Smith, Jr. of Panther, WV; one grandson, Justin "Cody" Vandyke of Hurley; seven step-children, one step-great-grandchild, several nieces and nephews.
  Services will be held today (Thursday), March 29 at 1 p.m. at Word Evangelistic Outreach Church (WEO) with Evg. David Cline and Pastor Jeff Stacy officiating. Burial will follow in the Annon Blankenship Cemetery at Hurley.
  Active pallbearers will be Rocky Justice, Arnold Justice, Justin Justice, Wesley Shafer, Josh Gibson, Charlie Gibson, Stewart Justus, Jr., James Justice, Dennis Justice, Michael Bailey, Herman Duty and Lawrence Slone.
  Honorary pallbearers will be Rick Mullins, Justin Vandyke, Harold Vandyke, Jerry Vandyke and Buddy Gibson.

Texie Justus
(Hurley)

  Texie Charles Justus, 58, of Hurley, died Friday, March 23, 2007 at Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy following an extended illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Rosie Stacy Charles. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a member of Claypool Hill Church of Christ. She was a former employee of Buchanan General Hospital.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Ayers, Cleve, Holsey, Paul and Ralph Charles.
  She is survived by her husband, James Edward Justus; one daughter, Kimberly Renee Justus of Grundy; one granddaughter, Alexis Madison Justus of Grundy; two sisters, Georgia Charles Fitzgerald of Meadowview and Maxine Burks of South Pittsburg, TN; and two brothers, Powell Charles and Oliver Charles, both of Hurley.
  Services were held Monday, March 26 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evgs. Dennis Wimmer and Bob Smith officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Active pallbearers were family and friends.

Pauline Emojean Goff
(Grundy)

  Pauline Emojean Wolford, Goff, 86, of Grundy, died Friday, March 23, 2007 at Altamont Manor in Lebanon, following an extended illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Myrtle Stacy Wolford. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a member of Grundy Church of Christ and was active  with the Ladies Group - Butterflies. She was owner-operator of the former Grundy Drive-In and was a homemaker.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mastin E. Goff, March 8, 1993; and two sisters, Christine Reber and Hydrith Doughten.
  She is survived by one daughter, Ernestine Sharyn and husband, Wayne Shingleton of Roanoke; three sons, Mastin E. Jr. and wife, Alma Goff, of Big Rock, Thomas Steven and wife, Angie Goff, of Richmond and Bradley R. and wife, Marcia D. Goff of Abingdon; three sisters, Dorothy and husband, Bill Runyon, of Oceanview, DE, Phyllis and husband, John McCaffrey of Livonia, MI and Betty Smith of Melbourne, FL; three brothers, Bobby and wife, Lucy Wolford, of Bear, DE, Scotty Wolford of Bluefield, VA and Bill Wolford of Clinton, MO; seven grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Monday, March 26 at the Grundy Church of Christ with Evgs. Mike Rife, Tom Cooper and Dennis Wimmer officiating. Burial followed in Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery in Richlands.
  Active pallbearers were family and friends.
  Honorary pallbearers were elders and deacons of the Grundy Church of Christ.

Donnie Lee Owens
(Grundy)

  Donnie Lee Owens, 56, of Grundy, died Wednesday, March 21, 2007 at Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol, TN, following an extended illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of Elijhu Owens, Jr. of Bristol, TN and the late Elizabeth Owens. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and was of the Baptist faith. He served in the United States Marines during the Vietnam War. He had been employed as a coal miner, carpenter and a truck driver.
  In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by one infant sister, Barbara Owens, and one infant brother, Ronnie Owens.
  In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife, Marlene Blankenship Owens; two daughters, Kim, and husband, Jerry Edwards, of Honaker and Misty, and husband, Brandy Davis, of Haysi; one son, Nick Owens of the home; two granddaughters, Hannah Fuller of Honaker and Ivy Davis of Haysi; four sisters, Beatrice Reynolds of Kingsport, TN, Sandy (Dean) Owens of Hansonville, Lora and husband, Clinton Looney, of Bristol, TN and Mae and husband, Rick Yates of Abingdon; two brothers, Devie, and wife, Crystal Owens of Kingsport, TN and Rickey and wife, Regina Owens, of Jonesborough, TN; several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Saturday, March 24 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evg. Jerry Edwards Sr. officiating. Burial followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill.
  Active pallbearers were family and friends.

Shirley Pauline Layne
(Hurley)

  Shirley Pauline Church Layne, 68, of Hurley, died Thursday, March 23, 2007 at Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol, TN, following an extended illness.
  Born in McDowell County, WV, she was the daughter of the late Neute and Blanche White Church. She was a resident of Buchanan County most of her life and was of the Holiness faith. She was a retired nurses' aid and a homemaker.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Ella Mae Hagerman, Lizzie Church and Eva Johnson; one brother, Jody Church; one son-in-law, Robert Snellenburger; and one niece.
  She is survived by her husband, Earvin Layne; five daughters, Melody and husband, Eddie Ray Matney, Jennifer Snellenburger and Charlotte and husband, Jimmy Prater, all of Hurley, Rhonda and husband, Charlie Goad of Richmond and Kim Layne and husband, Darrell Estep, of Iron Station, NC; three sons, Gary and wife, Sharon Shafer and Jerry and wife, Denise Shafer, all of Hurley and Earvin Layne, Jr. of Anderson, IN; four sisters, Lorene Church, Faye Church, Maude Pickle and Peggy Milonas, all of Bradshaw, WV; one brother, Charles Church Jr. of Richlands; 21 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Monday, March 26 at Word Evangelistic Outreach Church (WEO) with Pastor Darrell Davis and Evg. David Cline officiating. Burial followed in the Tom Sparks Cemetery on Rocks Ridge near Bradshaw.
  Active pallbearers were Shawn Matney, Scottie Matney, Wesley Shafer, Justin Underwood, Eddie Ray Matney, Jr., Bradley Estep, Josh Shafer, Caleb Shafer, Jonathan Matney and Alex Prater.

Timothy Carrel Shortridge
(Grundy)

  Timothy (Timmy) Carrel Shortridge, 42, of Grundy, died Friday, March 23, 2007 at his home.
  Born in Tazewell County, he was the son of Elmer Keister Shortridge of Claypool Hill and the late Edith Nell Estep Shortridge. He was a member of Grundy Baptist Church, was a 1982 graduate of Grundy Senior High School and a 1987 graduate of Pikeville College where he received his bachelor degree in Business Administration. He was employed by ST&T Trucking as a truck driver. He was a avid sportsman.
  In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife, Brenda Elaine Burks Shortridge; one daughter, Jessica Danielle Wright of Breaks; one son, Timothy Cale Shortridge of Grundy; one sister, Tammy Renee Shortridge of Richmond; three brothers, Gary Shortridge of Abingdon, Quentin Shortridge of Richlands and Harold Russell Shortridge of Wytheville; two grandchildren, Shawn Derek Blankenship and Emaleight Jadyn Clevingers; several aunts and uncles.
  Services were held Monday, March 26 at Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home in Grundy with Pastor Danny Hess and Elder Jim Blankenship officiating. Entombment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill.
  Active pallbearers were Greg Blankenship, Steve Stacy, Aaron Clevinger, Derk Blankenship, Robert Skeens, Wayne Peragon, Jerry Hodges and Randall Skeens.
  Honorary pallbearers were Bud Brown, David Epling, Dean Stiltner, Frennie Justus, Timmy Clevinger, Bill Matney and Dr. Bishop.

Dwayne Eddy Cline
(Avondale, WV)

  Dwayne Eddy Cline, 41, of Avondale, WV, died Thursday, March 22, 2007 following an ATV accident.
  Born in McDowell County, WV, he was the son of Charlene Hicks Cline of Avondale and the late Jimmy Lee Cline. He was a 1983 graduate of Iaeger High School and attended Roderfield Community House of Prayer.
  In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one brother, Jimmy Clinton Cline.
  In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Dana Harman Cline; one daughter, Jessica Jaletta Cline of Avondale; two sons, Justin Ryan Cline and Jason Dwayne Cline, both of Avondale; and maternal grandmother, Melda Hicks of Jolo, WV.
  Services were held Sunday, March 25 at Roderfield Community House of Prayer in Roderfield with the Revs. Johnny Akers, Randy Lee, Pete Woods and Sis. Lucille Soto officiating. Burial followed in the Tom Sparks Cemetery in Paynesville.
  Pallbearers were family and friends.

Kathy York
(Haysi, VA)

  Kathy York, 45, of Haysi, died Monday, March 19, 2007 at Russell County Medical Center in Lebanon.
  She had lived most of her life in Dickenson County and was a former LPN.
  She was preceded in death by her father, Gale Colley.
  Survivors include her mother, Cora Colley of Haysi; a son, James Cumbo of Mons, Belgium; her boy, Corey Cumbo and Alexis of Clintwood; four sisters, Caroline Belcher and Bruce of Haysi, Terra Colley of Haysi, Karen Creech and Willie of Kingsport, TN and Tessa Blankenship and Joey of Clinchco; three grandchildren, Angel Cumbo, Conner Cumbo and James Clayton Cumbo, Jr.
  Mullins Funeral Home, Clintwood, was in charge of arrangements.


Mildred Mae Branham
(Rochester, MI)

  Mildred Mae Branham, 72, of Rochester, MI, formerly of Fenton, MI, died Thursday, March 22, 2007 at Crittendon Hospital in Rochester.
  Born in Kentucky, she had resided in Fenton for 35 years, living the last three years in Rochester.
  She is survived by two sons, Greg and Debra Branham and their children, Rachel and Abigail of Rochester and Michael and Sharon Branham and their daughter, Emily, of San Antonio, TX; and one sister, Jean Justice of Kentucky.
  Services were held Saturday, March 24 at Sharp Funeral Home in Fenton with Pastor Jim Weigand officiating. Burial followed in the Oakwood Cemetery.
  Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of a contribution to the Danish Village.

Ruby June McAllister
(Bristol, VA)

  Ruby June Boyd Cook McAllister, 75, of Bristol, VA, died March 23, 2007.
  She had resided in Buchanan County before moving to the Bristol area in 1984. She was involved in numerous church endeavors at the State Street Church of Christ in Bristol.
  She was preceded in death by her parents, George Dorsen Boyd and Alice Pearl Shortridge Boyd; one daughter, Lonia Lue Cook Matney; her first husband, Alonzo Cook; two brothers, James Burton Boyd and Raymond Dewey Boyd; and two grandsons, Clinton James Cook and Jared Michael Joyce.
  She is survived by her husband, Robert McAllister; two daughters, Brenda June and husband, Denny Matney and Linda Sue and husband, Terry Long, of Paducah, KY; two sons, Jim Cook and Jerry Cook, both of Vansant; one son-in-law, John Matney, and wife, Becky, of Bristol, VA; two step-daughters, Barbara McAllister of Oakwood and Susan and husband, John Whitt of Richlands; two step-sons, Robert Barry McAllister  and wife, Connie, of Lebanon and David McAllister of Meadowview; 12 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Sunday, March 25 at Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, located on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens, Abingdon, with Evg. Jim Hill and Minister Dan Bailey officiating. Entombment followed in Colonial Chapel Mausoleum at Forest Hills.
  Pallbearers were the men of State Street Church of Christ.
  Farris Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.


Glenda Faith Edwards
(Damascus, VA)

  Glenda Faith Edwards, 63, of Damascus, formerly of Dickenson County, died Friday, March 23, 2007 at Dickenson Community Hospital in Clintwood.
  She was the daughter of the late Earl and Della Sutherland Edwards. She was last employed at Bike Athletic in Mountain City, TN. She was a 1961 graduate of Haysi High School and was of the Baptist faith.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Gaynard Norris and Kimberly Mitchell Edwards.
  She is survived by two sisters, Theda (Paul) Owens of Haysi and Sonia (Ronnie) Colley of Abingdon; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
  Services were held Sunday, March 25 at Haysi Funeral Home with Elders Joel Turner and Garnell Gilbert officiating. Burial followed in the Sutherland Cemetery at Lickcreek.
  Pallbearers were nephews, Matthew Sullivan, Aaron Colley, Jordan Sullivan, David Owens, Heath Owens, Aspen Owens, Zachary Owens and Jessie Thomas.
  Honorary pallbearers were Paul Owens, Gary Sullivan, Royce Owens, Duane Owens and Ronnie Colley.
  Haysi Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Lucy Violet Tiller
(North Vernon, IN)

  Lucy Violet Perkins Tiller, 75, of North Vernon, IN, died Tuesday, March 20, 2007 at Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility in Columbus, IN.
  Born in Jewell Ridge, she was the daughter of the late Bishop Simpson and Magnolia Boyd Perkins. She was a 1951 graduate of Honaker High School, was a homemaker and an Avon sales representative.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jearline "Jerry" Tiller, September 5, 2004.
  She is survived by two sons, Willis Tiller of Beckley, WV and Daniel B. Tiller of Forest; two daughters, Deborah A. DeWeese of Columbus, IN and Sharon Todd of North Vernon; one brother, Aubrey Perkins, of Honaker; two sisters, Shirley Mae Honaker and Pearly Fae Honaker, both of Honaker; and nine grandchildren, Melina DeWeese of Missoula, MT, Jessie DeWeese of Columbus, IN, Ashleigh Tiller, Daniel Tiller II and Christopher Tiller, all of Forest and Kellie Todd, Tara Todd, Katy Todd and Anna Mae Todd, all of North Vernon.
  A memorial service was held Thursday, March 22 at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home with the Rev. Barbara Grace officiating. An additional memorial service will be held in Council at a later date. Interment will be in the Tiller Cemetery at Council.
  Memorials may be made through the funeral home to Hospice of Jennings County.

Shiela Diana Rife
(Richlands, VA)

  Shiela Diana Rife, 47, of Richlands, died Saturday, March 24, 2007 at her home.
  Born in Grundy, she was the daughter of Ernest R. Rife of Grundy and the late Myrtle Louella Spangler Rundles. She was a graduate of Hurley High School and attended Southwest Virginia Community College where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She was a United States Army veteran.
  She is survived by her husband, John Cummings; her father, Ernest Rife and wife, Audrey, of Grundy; one daughter, Jessica Williams of Owensboro, AL; one son, Steven Donald Trott, Jr. of Owensboro; one sister, Tennia  Litzau of Bluewell, WV; one brother, Eugene Rife of Roseann; two half-brothers, Jason Daniels, Jr. and William Daniels, of Bluewell, WV; three step-sisters, Donna Stacy and Delores Keen, both of Grundy and Debra Martinez of St. George, UT; two step-brothers, James and Johnny Christian, both of Grundy; two grandsons, several nieces and nephews.
  A memorial service will be held today (Thursday), March 29 at 1 p.m. at Crossview Chuch of Christ, Paynesville, WV, with Pastor Hobert Kennedy and Evg. Mike Rife officiating.
