Young
Panther
Baseball
Squad Has
Material
to Build
Something
Special |
|
by
Lloyd
Combs
Sports
Reporter
Programs that win just six
games
in
four
years
don’t
rebuild,
but
Twin
Valley
is in
a
position
to
build
something,
and
it
has
the
material
it
needs
to
build
something
special.
The fifth-year program has five
freshmen
and
just
two
seniors,
so
this
year
is a
question
mark.
However,
the
Panthers
have
two
quality
arms
and
experience
to
build
around,
from
six
returnees
and
from
a
group
of
newcomers
who
have
tasted
success
in
youth
baseball.
“It’s a building year, but we
still
think
we
can
win
some
games
this
year,”
says
new
coach
Steve
Hamro
III,
the
third
coach
in
the
past
three
years
at
TVHS.
“A 6-45 (record) in four years
is a
lot
to
overcome,
but
the
boys
are
ready
to
work
hard
to
change
that.”
The pitching includes a
returnee
and a
newcomer
with
as
much
raw
ability
as
anyone
in
the
region.
Senior
righthander
Jeremiah
Lester
will
share
shortstop
and
starting
pitching
duties
with
freshman
Hunter
Simpson.
“Jeremiah gives us great senior
leadership,”
Hamro
said.
“He
has
that
fire
in
him.
He
wants
to
win.
“Hunter is one of the best
young
athletes
I’ve
seen
in my
10
years
of
being
around
high
school
baseball.
He is
a
great
hitter
and
has a
very
live
arm
for a
freshman.”
The returnees include
three
juniors
in
the
infield.
Cory Hicks takes over at first
base,
Josh
Crigger
moves
from
third
to
second
and
Chris
Viers
starts
at
third
after
spending
most
of
last
season
behind
the
plate.
Three experienced hands will
start
in
the
outfield.
Senior J.J. Matney is in left,
sophomore
Jory
Rife
starts
in
center
and
junior
Brandon
Bailey
is in
right.
“Cory Hicks is probably the
most
improved
player
from
last
year’s
team,”
Hamro
added.
“J.J.
Matney
and
Brandon
Bailey
hustle
and
work
hard.
They
give
me
everything
they
have
100
percent
of
the
time.
“Jory Rife and Josh Crigger are
solid
defenders
who
are
returning
from
last
year’s
team
and
Chris
Viers
is
one
of my
top
three
hitters.”

Grundy's
Justus Is
SWD,
Region IV
Player of
the Year |
|
Theo Justus had a stellar
four-year career at Grundy, but he may have saved his best for last.
The senior guard helped
his injury-depleted club claim a share of the regular season title in the
Southwest District, win the SWD tournament and advance to the regional
semifinals this past season.
For his efforts Justus
was voted SWD and Region IV Player of the Year for the 2005-2006 season. Justus
shared the regional honors with Bassett standout Brandon Johnson.
Teammate Jimmy Ashby, a
6-foot-4 junior, was named to the All-SWD First Team and was honorable mention
All-Region IV.
Senior Stephan Baker, who
missed the club’s final seven games with a knee injury, made the All-SWD Second
Team. Seniors Aaron Church, Tigh Compton and Anthony Mullins and sophomore Bobby
Peck received honorable mention All-SWD.
A 1,000-point
scorer for his career, Justus averaged a little over 17 points, four assists and
two steals per game during his senior season.
Joining Justus on the
All-Southwest District First Team are Carroll County senior Clay Guynn, senior
Brandon Robinson and sophomore Ben Mulkey or Richands and Graham senior Eric
Hoosier.
Rounding out the
All-Region IV First Team is Johnson, along with Taylor Perdue of Abingdon,
Shaquan Beamer of Martinsville and Carroll County’s Clay Guynn.
Brandon Robinson
was named to the All-Region IV Second Team. Troy Wells, who guided Martinsville
to its 13th Group AA state title, was named Region IV Coach of the Year.
