Kineth
Clevinger, 77, of Vansant, died Saturday, March 18, 2006 at
Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands following an
extended illness.
Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Lando
and Mae Stiltner Clevinger. He was a lifelong resident of
Buchanan County and was of the Regular Baptist faith. He was a
retired coal miner and a member of Local Union #7025.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his
wife, Christine Hilton Clev-inger; four sisters, Ruby Hagy,
Burchie Vestal, Geraldine Slone and Alvie Ellen Clevinger.
He is survived by one daughter, Linda and husband, Frankie
Deel, of Cedar Bluff; one son, Larry Kennith Clevinger and
fiance’, Jessica Mullins of Grundy; five sisters, Madge and
husband, Ralph Rowe, Melba Lester and Laura Clevinger, all of
Grundy, Shelby Jean and husband, James Keene, of Oakwood and
Wilma and husband, Paul Baldwin, of Vansant; two brothers,
Kerksey and wife, Paige Clevinger of Breaks and Lonnie Everett
and wife, Deb Clevinger of Vansant; three grandsons, two
great-grandsons and three great-granddaughters.
Services were held Tuesday, March 21 at Grundy Funeral Home
Chapel with Elders Roger Coleman, Toy Looney, Howard Daniels
and Frank O’Quinn. Burial followed in the Stiltner Cemetery at
Bethlehem Old Regular Baptist Church #1 on Poplar Creek.
Active pallbearers were Kevin Deel, Matt Deel, Eric Deel,
Jim Keene, Ralph Rowe, Paul Baldwin, Neil Harmon, Steven
Baldwin, Jason Baldwin, Ernest Hagy, Denver Hagy, David Hagy,

Mae Rasnake, 69, of Council, died Sunday, March 19, 2006 in
Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy.
Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late
Ashley and Hattie Lester. She was a homemaker and of the
Christian faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a
brother, Edwin Lester, and two sisters, Marilyn Lester and
Betty Wood.
She is survived by her husband, Hurcle Rasnake; three
daughters, Sharon (Edgar) Deel of Haysi, Keshia (Carson)
Austin of Council and Connie Muncy of Huntington, WV; two
sons, Hurshel Keith Rasnake of Davenport and Patrick Shawn
(Diane) Rasnake of Bluff City, TN; five sisters, Loretta
Willis of Council, Wilma Boyd of Davenport, Judy Sutherland of
Rosedale, Jeanie Rasnick of Birchleaf and Kathy Jones of
Claypool Hill; two brothers, Ralph Lester of Davenport and
Mack Lester of Damascus; one granddaughter.
Services were held Wednesday, March 22 at Haysi Funeral Home
with Denver Barton officiating. Burial followed in the Carson
and Keshia Austin Cemetery on Big A Mountain.
Pallbearers were family and friends.

Jr.

Joel
Albert Boyd, Jr., 82, of Garden Creek, died Wednesday, March
15, 2006 at Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy.
Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Joel
Albert Sr. and Margie Smith Boyd. He was a life-long resident
of Buchanan County and was a member of Little Prater Church of
Christ and attended the Garden Creek Church of Christ. He was
a graduate of Grundy High School’s class of 1947, was a member
of John Ratliff Post No. 164 of the American Legion and a
member of Child Gentry Post No. 7360. He served in the United
States Army during World War II, receiving the Good Conduct
Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and the
World War II Victory Ribbon. He was a retired mechanic at
Modern Sales & Service.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two
sisters, Sophia Endicott and Belle McClanahan, and one
great-granddaughter, Kloyie Madison Boyd.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Faye Lewis Boyd; one
daughter, Elizabeth and husband, Donnie Yates of Mavisdale;
one son, Joel Albert III and wife, Cheryl Boyd, of Vansant;
two sisters, Eva Gertrude Barrow of Albany, GA and Nancy
Stevens of Houston, TX; three brothers, Carl Boyd of Grundy,
Willard (Bill) Boyd of Cedar Bluff and Raymond Boyd of
Pikeville, KY; mother-in-law, Eva Lou Owens of Mavisdale;
three grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild.
Services were held Saturday, March 18 at Grundy Funeral Home
Chapel with Evgs. Michael Trent and Rusty Owens officiating.
Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
Full military rites were conducted at the cemetery by members
of John Ratliff Post No. 164 of the American Legion.
Active pallbearers were Donnie Yates, Jeremy Boyd, Clay
Yates, Peter Vasquez, Randy Smith, Ronnie Yates, Randy Skeens
and Kenneth Stiltner.

Goldie
Ann Blankenship Baker, 78, of Hurley, died Friday, March 17,
2006 at her home.
Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late
Conley Blankenship and Pearl Charles Blankenship. She was a
lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a member of Sulphur
Springs Old Regular Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one
daughter, Shirley Baker; one son, Hillard Baker; one grandson,
Scottie Dean Baker; three sisters, Laura Blan-kenship, Hazel
Cooper and Helen Smith; and five brothers, Clell, Edgar, Roy,
Morgan and Willard Blankenship.
She is survived by her husband, Edgar Baker; four daughters,
Sandra Fields, Patsy Bailey and Dianne Vance, all of Hurley
and Judy Meadows of Phelps, KY; six sons, Jimmy Baker, Roger
Baker, Steve Baker, Randy Baker and Mark Baker, all of Hurley
and Edgar Baker, Jr. of Grundy; three sisters, Vicey King of
Wolford, Georgia Stiltner of Grundy and Cora Looney of Rice;
19 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services were held Monday, March 20 at Sulphur Springs Old
Regular Baptist Church at Hurley with Elders Danny McCoy,
Danny Hurley, Willis Conrad and additional Elders of the Old
Regular Baptist Church. Burial followed in the Baker Cemetery
at Hurley.
Active pallbearers were grandsons.
Honorary pallbearers were brothers and sisters of the Old
Regular Baptist Church.

Edward
Donald Raines, 77, of Breaks, died Monday, March 20, 2006 at
Mt. View Health Care, Elkhorn City, KY.
Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late John
William Raines and Margaret Jane Bailey Raines. He was a U.S.
Army veteran and a carpenter.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Rosenzweig Raines;
brothers, Benny Raines of Oakwood, Paul Raines and Roby
Raines, both of Breaks, and Oscar Raines of Lexington, KY;
sisters, Pebble Valentino and Clara Kendrick of Lexington, KY
and Gracie June Wimmer of Narrows.
Services were held Wednesday, March 22 at Bailey Funeral
Home Chapel in Elkhorn City with Elders Jim Fields, Elwood
Cornet, Theodore Looney and Arnold Bailey officiating. Burial
followed in the Raines Family Cemetery, Breaks.

Floyd
Edgar Viers, Sr., 87, of Rocky Gap, formerly of Buchanan
County, died Sunday, March 19, 2006 at his home following an
extended illness.
Born in Russell County, he was a son of the late Brice
Madison and Ocie Fanny Jane Osborne Viers and was a member
of the Rocky Gap Church of Christ. He had lived most of his
life around the Vansant area, worked as a coal truck driver
and spent most of his life driving for a cab driving
service. He was employed as a security guard at Buchanan
General Hospital where he retired in 1984. He was the last
surviving member of his immediate family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by
two sisters, Isabella Vandyke and Rosie Viers; and two
brothers, Fred Viers and Thomas Viers.
He is survived by his wife, Lillian Carol McCoy Viers; two
daughters, Gayle and husband, Warren Burke of Aberdeen, MD
and Darlene and Joe Shaffer of Rockville, MD; one son, Floyd
Edgar, Jr. and wife, Betty Viers, of Rocky Gap; five
grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services were held Wednesday, March 22 at Grundy Funeral
Home Chapel with Evg. Jim Hill officiating. Burial followed
in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.

Vester Ball, 78, of Elkton, MD, died Monday, March 20, 2006
at his home.
Born in Cleveland, VA, he was the son of Delpha (Musick)
Ball of Davenport and the late Teddy Ball. He served during
World II in the U.S. Army. Upon arrival in Maryland, he
worked at the ship yard at Sparrows Point. He was an
assembly line worker, employed by General Motors until his
retirement due to a disability. He was a member of the First
Baptist Church of North East in North East, MD and was a
member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the Masons,
Patapsco Lodge #183, A.F. and A.M.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his
first wife, Delphia R. Ball, in 1999; one son, Donald L.
Ball; granddaughter, Kimberly Ball; step-son, Michael
Willis; and step-daughter, Karen Sue Willis.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife,
Betty Ball; three sons, Timothy L. Ball and wife, Claudia,
of Granite, MD, Ronald V. Ball and wife, Karen, of Bel Aid,
MD and Richard Nolan Ball, Jr. of Milford, CT; one sister,
Ina Fern Breeding of Davenport; one brother, Billy Ball of
Green Coast Springs, FL; one step-daughter, Charon Mil-berger
of Pueblo, CO; step-son, Donald Scott Willis and wife, Judy,
of Arura, CO; seven grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren.
Services will be held today (Thursday), March 23 at First
Baptist Church of North East with the Rev. Steven Hokuf
officiating. Interment will follow in Holly Hill Memorial
Gardens in Baltimore.

March 17, 2006 at Woodland Terrace Nursing Home in Hernando.
Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late
John Berton Collins and Cora Mae Stiltner Collins Hart. She
was a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by
her husband, Richard Donald (Don) Hibbitts, Sr.; one
daughter, Wanda L. Snyder; three brothers, Marshall, Frank
and Russell Collins; and one sister, Geneva Prater.
She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Curtis (Judith
T.) Stacy and Mrs. Melvin (Mary F.) Cordle, all of Pounding
Mill, and Brenda C. Boyd of Rockwell, NC; two sons, James E.
(Jim) Hibbitts and wife, Margaret, of Alexandria, AL and
Richard Donald (Don) Hibbitts, Jr. and wife, Glenda, of

II of San Antonio, TX; three sisters, Carolyn Singleton of

Sgt.
First Class Clyde Wayne Shell, 64, of the Lewis Creek
section of Honaker, died Saturday, March 18, 2006 in the
James H. Quillen Medical Center in Johnson City, TN.
Born in Honaker, he was a son of the late Henry S. Shell
and Edith Wilson Shell McGlothlin. A retiree of the United
States Army for 23 years, he served two tours in Vietnam.
During his military career, he was awarded the Soldier’s
Medal, the Silver Star and the Bronze Star.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by
one son, Bobby Wayne Shell.
He is survived by his wife, Stella Honaker Shell; two
daughters, Rachell Lucinda Shell Powers and husband, J.B. of
Dallas, OR and Lisa Sara Shell Hess and husband, Corey, of
Honaker; one son, Clyde Wesley Shell and wife, Zella Knight
Shell of Honaker; two sisters, Ella Mae Phillips and
husband, Dale and Wanda Dykes and husband, Foster, all of
Kingsport, TN; two half-sisters, Connie Self and husband,
Carl, of Castlewood and Brenda Alley and husband, Tim, of
Lebanon; one half-brother, Danny McGlothlin and wife, Laura,
of Lebanon; two granddaughters, two grandsons, one
step-granddaughter and two step-grandsons.
Services were held Tuesday at Honaker with the Revs. Rick
Smith, Steve Perkins and Henry Rose officiating. Interment
followed in the Honaker Family Cemetery at New Garden near
Nash’s Ford. Military graveside rites were conducted by the
Fort Lee Honor Guard .

Smith.

Wednesday, March 15, 2006 at her home.
Born in McDowell County, she was the daughter of the late
Harvey Hawks and Alice Mullins Hawks. She was a member of
Bradshaw Mountain Community Church and was a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by
one son, Bobby Gene Blevins, two sisters and one brother.
She is survived by two daughters, Nora Lynn Blount and
husband, Allen, of Palatka, FL and Rita Kay Trivette and
husband, Steve, of Winston-Salem, NC; two sons, David Aldon
Blevins and wife, Crystal, and John Lewis Blevins and wife,
Emily, all of Palatka; two foster sons, Bobby Jack Lewis and
David Leon Miller, both of Paynesville; five sisters
including twin sister, Mary Foley, Agnes Kennedy and Marge
Asbury all of Paynesville, Gertrude Foley of East Lake, OH
and Wilma Deskins of Pounding Mill; three brothers, Russell
Hawks of Paynesville, James Hawks of Cleveland, OH and
Dallas Hawks of East Lake, OH; 16 grandchildren and six
great-grandchildren.

Michael "Mike" McClanahan, 53, of Bristol, TN, died at his
home Saturday, March 18, 2006.
A native of Buchanan County, he was a graduate of Virginia
Tech and had resided in the Bristol area for the past 15
years. He was a Mason, was self-employed and was a certified
diver. He was latest employed by Sexton Marine.
He is survived by his wife, Rita Wright McClanahan;
children, Harley and Maggie; his mother, Margaret McClanahan
of Oakwood; one brother, Patrick F. McClanahan of Nashville,
TN; one sister, Lois and husband Gerald Kendrick of Vansant;
six nephews and two nieces.
Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of
contributions to the 4-H Center in Abingdon, to the Bristol
Humane Society or to the American Cancer Association.
A celebration of life service is being planned.

Johnson, 67, of Rosedale, died Friday, March 17, 2006 at his
home.
Born in Council, he was a son of the late Joe and
Clementine Osborne Johnson. He spent his early life in the
Buchanan County area prior to moving to Florida where he
resided 33 years, later returning to Russell County in 1990.
He was a member of Harmony Community Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by
one son, Carlos Melvin (Buck) Johnson; two brothers, Floyd
Johnson and Clyde Johnson; and two sisters, Bertha Harris
and Betty Johnson.
He is survived by two sons, Marvin Johnson of Abingdon and
Gary Johnson of Honaker; one step-son, James (Jimmie) Edge
of Phoenix, AZ; three daughters, Melissa Spencer of the
home, Mary Ratliff of Swords Creek and Amanda Helbert of
Castlewood; three step-daughters, Kathy Crab-tree of
Council, Rebekah Pendleton of Lincolnton, NC and Dolly
Crabtree of Cedar Bluff; one brother, Ervin Johnson of
Honaker; five sisters, Gladys Bostic of Honaker, Lena
Johnson and Rosa Johnson, both of Council, Stella Taylor of
Harvedegrave, MD and Margie (Mazie) Crabtree of Lebanon; 24
grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, several nieces and
nephews.
Services were held Monday in Honaker with the Rev. Roy Lee
Wilson and Minister Thurman Spencer officiating. Interment
followed in the Johnson Cemetery at Combs Ridge.

Johnson, Stevie Johnson, Jeffrey Stevens and Jacob Helbert.

Douglas (J.D.) Addair, 73, of Yadkinville, NC, formerly of
Jolo, WV, died Wednesday, March 15, 2006 at his home.
Born in McDowell County, he was the son of Gladys Ola
Sweeney Addair of Grundy and the late Dewey Columbus Addair.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, was of the Christian faith and
was a retired mechanic.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one
sister and two brothers.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by three
daughters, Sandy Eagleye, Sheila Wolfe and Marilyn Addair,
all of Cleveland, OH; two sons, Stanley Wayne Robinson of
Canoonville, OR and Dannie Addair of Ashtabula, OH; one
sister, Lola Addair Brown of Tazewell; 18 grandchildren and
several great-grandchildren.
Services were held Sunday, March 19 at Shortridge-Ramey
Funeral Home Chapel in Grundy with the Revs. Dennis Dunford,
Ray Long and Thomas Addair officiating. Burial followed in
the Addair Family Cemetery on Atwell Mountain, Jolo.

Mae Goetz, 67, of Rosedale, died Thursday, March 16, 2006 at
her home.
Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late
James Coy and Mary Lea Honaker Hess. She spent her early
life in Buchanan County, moving to Baltimore, where she
resided for 40 years, later moving back to Russell County in
1998. She was of the Baptist faith and a member of Countess
Rebekah Lodge #31 of Honaker. She was a volunteer at Russell
County Medical Center and Helping Hearts of Lebanon.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by
her husband, Robert Lee Goetz, and four brothers.
She is survived by one daughter, Judy and husband, Ed
Patti, of Orlando, FL; one son, Robert Goetz, of Baltimore,
MD; six brothers, Raymond Hess and David Hess, both of Rowe,
Harvey Hess and Carl Hess, both of Honaker and Nelson Hess
and Otis Hess, both of North Carolina; four sisters, Eula
Blankenship of Rowe, Della Parkhurst of North Carolina,
Linda Woodward of Rosedale and Anna Moats of Clarksville,
TN; six grandchildren.
Services were held Sunday at Rowe Pentecostal Holiness
Church with the Rev. Ancil Childress officiating. Interment
followed in the Nuckles-Hess Cemetery at Fletcher’s Ridge.
Pallbearers were grandsons and Orin Mallory.

Lockhart, 81, of Manassas, died Sunday, March 19, 2006 at
his home.
Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Henry
and Pearl Breeding Lockhart. He was retired from Fruit
Growers Express (1960-1986) in Alexandria and had previously
been employed by Ford Motors in Michigan and Island Creek
Coal Company in Buchanan County. He was a member of the
Transportation Communication Union and the Pine Forest Hunt
Club of Spotsylvania. He was of the Pentecostal faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by
one daughter, Susan Denise Lockhart Owens, and two brothers,
Earl Lockhart and Harless Lockhart.
He is survived by his wife, Louise Hess Lockhart; two
sons, Michael Lockhart and wife, Lucille, of Palm Bay, FL
and Gregory Lockhart of Manassas; three brothers, Arnold
Lockhart and wife, Victoria, of Davenport, Obia Lockhart and
wife, Barbara, of Honaker and C.O. Lockhart and wife, Marie,
of Spotsylvania; three sisters, Thelma Blankenship of Rowe,
Geneva Hess and husband, Bryant, of Honaker and Eleanor
Rutherford of Lafollette, TN; three granddaughters, two
grandsons, several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held today (Thursday) in Honaker with the
Rev. Ancil Childress officiating. Interment will follow in
Russell Memorial Cemetery, Lebanon.

Hess, Rick Presley, Allen Presley and Jason Ratliff.
