Lillie Ramey Stiltner, 90, of the Stiltner's Creek section
of Grundy, died Friday, March 16, 2007 at Buchanan General
Hospital in Grundy following an extended illness.
Born
in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Joe and
Cora Ramey. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County
and a member of the Poplar Creek Church of Christ for 45
years. She was a former owner/operator of a clothing store.
In
addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her
husband, Gilmer Stiltner; three sons, Clifford, Ersel and
Mack Stiltner; two granddaughters, three grandsons, four
sisters and one brother.
She
is survived by four daughters, Geneva and husband, Frank
Stiltner and Brenda and husband, Don Ashby, all of Grundy,
Mervil Rowe and Dawneda and husband, Jay Wallace, all of
Abingdon; three sons, Edd and wife, Hope Stiltner of Grundy,
Hank and wife, Rose Mary Stiltner of Ellijay, GA and Ervin
and wife, Mary Ann Stiltner of Abingdon; one brother,
Clarence and wife, Edith Ramey of Grundy; 35 grandchildren,
43 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great-grandchildren.
Services
were held Monday, March 19 at Poplar Creek Church of Christ
with Evg. Raffael Farrow, Evg. Mike Rife, Evg. J.C. Anderson
and Pastor Don Ashby officiating. Burial followed in
Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.

Warren G. Ward, 76, of Grundy, died Sunday, March 18, 2007
at his home following an extended illness.
Born
in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Elmer Ward
and Margie Davis Ward. He was a retired heavy equipment
operator for United Coal Company, was a U.S. Army veteran of
the Korean Conflict; and a member of Friendly Chapel Church.
He was an avid horseman and camper.
In
addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one
brother and one sister.
He
is survived by his wife, Lucie Leona Mullins Ward; one
daughter, Anita Waddell and husband Ray, of Paynesville, WV;
one son, Leo Ward and wife, Ruthy, of Grundy; one
step-daughter, Freda Lester and husband, Herman, of
Cherryville, NC; four sisters, Mildred and Betty, both of
Illinois, Delma of Alabama, and Jean of Michigan; one
brother, Joe Ward of Michigan; one granddaughter, Tara
Lester; five
step-grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, Ashley Lester,
and three great step-grandchildren.
Services
will be held today (Thursday), March 22 at Cross View Church
of Christ, Paynesville, with Evg. Hobert Kennedy
officiating. Burial will follow in the Endicott-Mullins
Cemetery at State Line Ridge #1 in Paynesville. Full
military rites will be conducted by the American Legion John
Ratliff Post # 164.

Robert E. Marcell, 70, of Big Rock, died Thursday, March 15,
2007 at his home.
Born
in Chicago, IL, he was the son of the late Robert Marcell
Sr. and Nancy Riple Marcell. He was a retired machine
operator from Morton’s Manufacturing in Liberty Mill, IL.
A member of the Big Rock Church of Christ, he was an avid
photographer and computer operator.
In
addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one
sister, Barbara Ferge, and one brother, Richard Marcell.
He
is survived by his wife, Pauline Stiltner Marcell; one
step-son, Billy Blankenship of Elkhorn City, KY; two
brothers, William Bruce Marcell and wife, Judy, of Wisconsin
and Bruce Marcell and wife, Judy, of Illinois; three
step-grandchildren and one step great-great grandchild.

Ruby Jane Scarberry Estep, 79, of Hurley, died Thursday,
March 15, 2007 at Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson
City, TN, following an extended illness.
Born
in Paw Paw, KY, she was the daughter of the late Dewey and
Delphia Dotson Scarberry. She was a resident of Buchanan
County most of her life and
a member of Kelsa Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. She
was a homemaker.
In
addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her
husband, Garland Estep; one son, Jeff Estep; two daughters,
Beatrice and Pat Estep; two grandsons, one brother and one
sister.
She
is survived by three daughters, Bertha Allen of Hurley, Edna
and husband, Terry Justice of Freeburn, KY and Joann and
husband, Ronald Lester of Woodman, KY; three sons, Orville
and wife, Lucrettia Estep, Dallas and wife, Kathy Estep and
Scotty Estep, all of Hurley; two sisters, Rose Dotson and
Fern Justice, both of Hurley; three brothers, Roy Scarberry
and Vernon Scarberry, both of Paw Paw, KY and Paul Scarberry
of North Carolina; seven grandchildren, Eric Allen, Kevin
Lester, Justin Todd Lester, Marcus Butchie Lester, Jeffery

Curtis Smith
(Abingdon,
VA)
Jack Curtis Smith, 81, of Abingdon, formerly of Buchanan
County, died Thursday, March 15, 2007 at his home in
Abingdon following a brief illness.
Born
August 21, 1925 in Grundy, he was the only child of Buchanan
County natives, Curtis and Elizabeth Belcher Smith.
Mr.
Smith graduated from Grundy High School in 1942 and the
United States Naval Academy in June 1947, with a degree in
Electrical Engineering. After marrying Jewell Garland Smith
in 1947, he served seven years active duty in the U.S. Navy,
stationed in Panama and San Diego, CA. He returned to Grundy
and opened his first Piggly Wiggly Store in 1955 with the
help of three special stockholders: his father, Curtis
Smith; uncle, Earl Smith; and cousin, Ernest Smith. The
company grew to incorporate 95 Food City and Super Dollar
supermarkets in three states.
He served as chief executive officer until 2001 when
he passed the torch to his son, Steven C. Smith.
Mr.
Smith's strong sense of community involvement was evident in
the countless organizations supported by him and Food City.
He
received numerous awards and honors throughout his career,
including Tennessee Grocer's prestigious 1996 Grocer of the
Year Award and, the Junior Achievement Tri-Cities TN/VA
Business Hall of Fame Laureate in 1999. He served on various
boards, including the Federal Reserve Board of Directors,
holding the office of President in 1981, President of
National Piggly Wiggly Operators Association in 1969 and
President and member of the Grundy Rotary Club. He was also
a long-time member of National Grocers Association, where he
received The 2002 Clarence G. Adamy "Great
American" Award.
He
was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Jewell
"Judy" Garland Smith in 2003.
He
is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Steven C. Smith,
and his wife, Debbie, of Abingdon; two daughters and
sons-in-law, Stephanie and Frank David of Richlands and
Sharon and Thomas Hembree of Abingdon; one sister-in-law,
Ione Saylor of Westminster, MD; two brothers-in-law, Bob
Watts of Annapolis, MD and Claude Garland and wife, Angela
Garland of Westminster; six grandchildren, Alison David,
Joshua David, Drew Hembree, Melanie Hembree, Katie Smith and
Chloe Smith; and one special cousin, Lee Smith of
Hillsborough, NC.
Services
were held Monday, March 19 at Highlands Fellowship Church in
Abingdon with Ministers Bill Neeley and Mike Rife
officiating. Entombment followed at Colonial Chapel
Mausoleum at Forest Hills Memory Gardens in Abingdon.
Military rites were conducted by Highlands Fellowship Honor
Color Guard.

T.H. Nichols, 78, of Bristol, VA, died
Wednesday, March 14, 2007 in the Wellmont Hospice
House.
Born
in Pickens, SC, he was a son of the late William B. (Bone)
Nichols and Ida Mae Looney Nichols. He was a lifelong
resident of Buchanan County and a former resident of North
Tazewell, moving to Bristol two years ago. He was a member
of Calvary Baptist Chapel in North Tazewell, was a member
of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American
Veterans, Masonic Lodge #17 A.F. & A.M., Grundy, Kazim
Temple of Roanoke, First Marine Division Association of
Old Breed. He was the retired founder and owner of T.H.
Nichols Line Contractor and was a U.S. Marine Veteran of
World War II and Korean War and was a former Chief Deputy
Sheriff of Buchanan County.
In
addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his
first wife, Naomi L. Nichols; brothers, Claude Nichols,
Elmer Nichols and Glen Nichols; and one sister, Edna Faye
Nichols.
He
is survived by his wife, Phyllis J. Nichols; two sons,
Jack A. Nichols and wife, Jan, of Bristol, VA and Thomas
H. (Timmy) Nichols, Jr. and wife, Dena (Bubs), of

Ron Keith Ratliff, Sr., 75, of Ringgold, LA, formerly of
Buchanan County, died Monday, March 5, 2007.
Born
in Grundy, he was the son of lifelong Grundy residents,
the late John Henry and America Virginia Hackney Ratliff.
He served his country during the Korean War and was in the
Army’s 7th Infantry Division, C Battery, 31
Field Artillery Battalion, the first and only American
Division to reach the Yalu River in North Korea during the
Korean War in 1950. He spent most of his adult years in
Louisiana where he started working as a journeyman painter
in the Shreveport, LA area and spent his last 32 years of
employment with United Gas Pipeline Company, where he
retired.
In
addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his
wife, Treca (“Pat”) Horn Ratliff of Pilgrim’s Bluff;
six brothers and two sisters.
He
is survived by four children,
Ron K. Ratliff, Jr. and wife, Mitzi, of Ringgold,
Lynne Ratliff Burroughs and husband, Eugene, of Haughton,
LA, Nancy
Ratliff Fruge’ and husband, Dean, of West Lake, LA and

Stiltner and Mary Magaline Foster Stiltner. He was a
member of Miller's Creek Church of Christ and was a
retired truck driver.

brother, Earl Foster.

Buchanan County, died Thursday, March 15, 2007 in Raleigh,
NC, following a brief illness.
Born
in Buchanan County, he was a son of Spicy Keen Lester, of
Claypool Hill and the late Burb Lester. He was a resident
of Buchanan County most of his life prior to moving to
Fayetteville and was a graduate of the Grundy Senior High
School Class of 1966. He was the owner/operator of
Continental Enterprises and Kodiak Coal and was a truck
driver for Schneider Trucking. He was an avid hunter and
fisherman.
In
addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one
sister, Geneva Matney.
In
addition to his mother, he is survived by his former wife,
Deborah Lester of Rowe; one daughter, Jennifer and
husband, Chris Cozzie, of Richmond; one son, Jason Keith
Lester of Fayetteville; one granddaughter, Megan Cozzie,
of Richmond; four brothers, Vaughn Lester and Otis Lester,
both of Claypool Hill, Jennings Lester of Fredericksburg
and Kenneth Lester of Lexington, SC; several nieces and

in Richlands, he had resided in Haysi the first 18 years
of his life. He was a graduate of Haysi High School and
East Tennessee State University and was employed as a
design consultant for the kitchen and bath department of
The Home Depot in Asheville. He made his profession of
faith and was baptized at Peuther Chapel Church on Caney
Ridge.
He
is survived by his parents, Fonso and Clara Sutherland of
Haysi; three brothers, Tim (Robin) Sutherland, Phillip (Jedda)
Sutherland and David Sutherland, all of Haysi; his birth
mother, Amy Sutherland Hicks and her children; one sister,
Nichole (Jeff) Senter Birdwell, and his brother, Derick
Hicks, all of Johnson City, TN.

Harris; and one uncle.

Earl B. Wilson, Sr., 83, of Honaker, died
Saturday, March 17, 2007 in a Richlands hospital.
Born
in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Jake and Ora
Belle Ball Wilson. He had spent most of his life in the
area and was a member and deacon at Mt. Zion Free Will
Baptist Church. He was a United States Navy veteran,
having served during World War II.
In
addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by
several brothers and sisters.
He
is survived by his wife, Virginia Wilson; one daughter,
Joyce Thomas, of Lebanon; one son, Earl Wilson, Jr. and
wife, Wanda, of Honaker; grandchildren, Connie Cook, Bobby
Carter Rose II, Amy McGlothlin, David Wilson, Deanna
Daughtery and Adam McGlothlin; two great-grandchildren,
Jordan Wilson and Braden Daughtery; one brother, Rev.

Hackney, and Minnie Louise Stiltner Hackney Fields. He was
a retired coal miner and attended Clintwood Baptist
Church.
In
addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two
brothers, Kenneth Hackney and William Fields; one sister,
Virginia Compton; and one niece, Gretha Compton.
He
is survived by his wife, Dellia Stiltner Hackney; two
daughters Rita Baker and husband, James and Rebecca
Hackney, all of Clintwood; two sisters, Lois Alley and
husband, Worley, and Dorothy Sheets and husband, Wiley,
all of Richlands; one granddaughter, Hollie Baker, of
Clintwood; several
nieces and nephews.
Services
were held Wednesday, March 21 at Shortridge-Ramey Funeral
Home in Grundy with the Rev. Allen Bonnell officiating,
Burial followed
in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
Pallbearers
were members of his family.
Shortridge-Ramey
Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Francis Cline
(Mohawk,
WV)
Judy Francis Justice Cline, 57, of Mohawk,
WV, formerly of Buchanan County, died Monday, March 19,
2007 following an automobile accident.
Born
in Hurley, she was a daughter of the late Delbert Justice
and Kathleen Birchfield Justice Lockhart. She was a former
nurse, adult care provider, foster parent, PTA President
for Panther and Iaeger Elementary, President of Foster
Parents Association and Panther Midget League Cheerleading
Coach. She and her husband were named "Foster Parents
of the Year in 2005.
In
addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one
son, Dexter Dale Cline, and one daughter, Dextrina
"Dixie" Cline.
She
is survived by her husband, Dexter O'Dell Cline; six
daughters, Micki Lockhart Cline Short and husband, Robert,
of Welch, WV, Kathy Coleman and husband, Joseph, of Bull
Creek, Jennifer, Autumn, Stormie and Rianna, all of the
home; six sons, Jeremy, Jacob, Jonathon, Dakota and Randy,
all of the home, and Lance Corporal Joshua Cline,
stationed in Iraq; 11 grandchildren, Jayden Thomas,
Steven, Dewey, Tyler, Travis and Heather Coleman, all of
Bull Creek, Jacob Cline of Peterstown, WV, Tara Cline,
Tabitha and Jannie Short, both of Welch and Samantha Short
of Inez, KY; one sister, Margaret Fannin and husband,
Jerry, of Huntington, WV; three brothers, Bill Ray Justice
of War Eagle, Danny Justice of Brush Fork and Charles
Justice of Mansfield, OH; and her mother-in-law, Mary
Cline of Bull Creek.
Services
will be held today (Thursday), March 22 at 11 a.m. at
Panther Missionary Baptist Church in Panther with the Rev.
Jonathon Hunt officiating. Burial will follow in the Cline
Family Cemetery on Bull Creek near Mohawk.
Pallbearers
will be family and friends.
Fanning
Funeral Home in Iaeger is in charge of arrangements.
