Lucy Ball Carver
(Patterson)

    Lucy Ball Carver, 99, of Patterson, died Saturday, March 15, 2008 at Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy, following an extended illness.
    Born in Russell County, she was the daughter of the late John Adams and Cora Boyd Ball. She had been a resident of Buchanan County most of her life, was a graduate of Honaker High School's class of 1929, attended Radford University and graduated from Pikeville College in 1971 with a BS degree in elementary education. She taught school for a total of 43 years, beginning her career in Russell County in 1931 where she taught all seven grades in a one-room school.  With her first teaching contract for $65.00 per month, she was able to support her parents and siblings during the Great Depression. In Buchanan County, she taught many years at Patterson Elementary and retired from Vansant Elementary School in 1975. She was a member of Looney's Chapel United Methodist Church, Buchanan County Retired Teachers Association, the Appalachian Agency for Senior Citizens, Advisory Committee for AASC, and the Senior Citizens Bowling League. She participated in the Senior Olympics and Senior Spelling Bees.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward E. Carver, January 11, 1967; three sisters, Mamie Anderson, Marjorie Herndon and Mona Reedy; and six brothers, Kennith, Ben, Harold, Glen, Ayers and Clyde Ball.
     She is survived by three sisters, Edith Hanson of Lebanon, Frances Nelson and Mildred Ball, both of Bristol, TN; 29 nieces and nephews.
     Services were held Tuesday, March 18 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Ministers J.N. Howard, Paul Mays and Sylvia Jones officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
    Active pallbearers were Paul Hayes, Clinton Dye, Doug Burks, Paul Herndon, Keith Boyd, Roger Keene, Willy Elswick, Steve Looney and Lynn Reedy.
     Honorary pallbearers were Frank Reedy, Jr., Jack Spurgeon, Bill O'Dell, Jim Church, Leroy Jones, Doug Mays, Dan Owens, Robert "Bull" Bevins, W.J. Caudill, Nathan Harper, Owen Dabney, Ralph Anderson, Dr. H. Patel, Dr. J.N. Patel, the staff of Heritage Hall Nursing Home and Buchanan General Hospiital's fourth floor nursing staff.
    The family suggests additional expressions of sympathy be made in the form of contributions to: Baptist Bible Church, P.O. Box 14, Pilgrim's Knob, VA 24634 for their Morning Ministry which is held at the nursing home.

Ralph J.  Daugherty
(Poplar Creek)

    Ralph James Daugherty, 70, of the Poplar Creek section of Buchanan County, died Monday, March 10, 2008 at his home following an extended illness.
    Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Hise and Ada Justus Daugherty. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a member of Bull Creek Old Regular Baptist Church. He was a former employee of Island Creek Coal Company and a member of UMWA Local Union No. 1807.
     In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Annie McClanahan, and one brother, Roscoe James Daugherty.
     He is survived by his wife, Jettie Merline Clevinger Daugherty; one daughter, Rhonda Gail and husband, Keith Henderson of Wingate, NC; one son-in-law, Randy Stewart of Big Rock; two sons, Gregory Ralph and wife, Sherry Daugherty of Wingate and Wiley and wife, Crissie Daugherty of Monroe, NC; three brothers, Milen and wife, Dixie Daugherty of Newfoundland, NY, Jerry and wife, Patricia Daugherty of Conemaugh, PA and William and wife, Lois Daugherty of Bradshaw, WV; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
     Services were held Friday, March 14 at Bull Creek Old Regular Baptist Church at Harman with Elders Howard Daniels, Larry Puckett, Ralph Mullins, Roger Coleman, Carson Wright, Freelin Yates, Willis Conrad and Toy Looney officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
     Active pallbearers were Josh Stewart, Jerry Daugherty, Kevin Holman, Matthew Holman, Mark Daugherty, Ronald Blankenship, Adrian Clevinger and Darrel Clevinger.
     Honorary pallbearers were Mikey Holman, Mike Holman, Jerry Clevinger, Keith Henderson, Randy Stewart, Shane Matney, Bill Daugherty and Roscoe Daugherty.
     Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Ocie Taylor Lester
(Big Rock)

     Ocie Taylor Lester, 91, of Big Rock, died Thursday, March 13, 2008 at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, TN following an extended illness.
     Born April 3, 1916 in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Garfield and Melissa Lester Taylor. She was a member of Big Rock Pentecostal Church and was a homemaker. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
     In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Miles Lester; two sons, Hubert Eugene Lester and Frank Lester; two brothers, Greeley Taylor and Ellis Taylor; one sister, Jane Stacy; one son-in-law, Ron Phillips; and one granddaughter, Debra Edwards.
      She is survived by three daughters, Janice Phillips of Harman, Mary and husband, Jerry Coleman, of Big Rock and Ruby and husband, John Browning, of Kingsport; nine grandchildren, Joyce and husband, Terry Scarberry, Ronnie and wife, Melissa Phillips and Jerry R. Coleman Jr. and wife, Crystal, all of Grundy, Mark and wife, Gwen Phillips, of Breaks, Tammy and husband, Keith Fields of Big Rock, Judy and husband, Ben Johnson and Danny and wife, Amanda Browning, all of Kingsport, John Browning III of Church Hill, TN and Jeffrey Lester of Rosedale; 17 great-grandchildren, Shannon Scarberry, Kayla Phillips, Austin Phillips, Christian Phillips, Chandler Phillips, Sagon Phillips, Brick Johnson, Katelyn Johnson, Jayden Johnson, Kelsey Browning, Matthew Fields, Jonathan Fields, Joshua Fields, Jordan Fields, Jacob Fields, Bethany Leann Coleman, Rebecca Lester; one great-great-grandson; and two special nieces, Mary Harrison and Sue Dotson.
     Services were held Sunday, March 16 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Danny Hess officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
    Active pallbearers were grandsons.
     Honorary pallbearers were Susan Looney, Tina Compton, staff of Brookhaven Nursing Home and doctors and nurses of Holston Valley ICU.
     Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Michael Ray Matney
(Breaks)

     Michael Ray (Mo) Matney, 50, of Breaks, died Thursday, March 13, 2008 at Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy.
     Born November 5, 1957 in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Otis Matney and Thelma Runyons Matney.
     In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one infant daughter, Christy Matney.
     He is survived by his wife, Debora Baird Matney; two step-daughters, Misty Caudill of Breaks and Tracy Clevinger of Abingdon; one son, Timothy Michael Matney of Haysi; one step-son, Daniel Todd Adkins of Belleville, MI; three sisters, Phyllis Matney McClanahan of Rosedale, Janet Harris of Roanoke and Nancy Asbury of Rosedale; two brothers, Jeffery Matney of Elkhorn City, KY and Larry Matney of Haysi.
     Services were held Sunday, March 16 at Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel in Grundy with Minister William McClanahan officiating.
     At his request, his body was cremated.
     Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel was in charge of arrangements.


Imogene Mullins
(Keen Mountain)

     Imogene Mullins, 63, of Keen Mountain, died Monday, March 17, 2008 at Tazewell Community Hospital in Tazewell following a brief illness.
     Born in Dickenson County, she was the daughter of the late Kemper and Ollie Mullins Fuller Mullins. She was a resident of Buchanan County most of her life and was of the Baptist faith.
     In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Martha Mullins, and three brothers, Paul Mullins, Clyde Mullins and Frank Fuller.
      She is survived by two sisters, Ruth Viers of Vansant and Marie Jennings of Detroit, MI; three brothers, James and wife, Rusha Fuller, of Vansant, Carter Lee Mullins of Richlands and Howard and wife, Ann Mullins, of Corbin, KY.
     Services will be held today (Thursday), March 20 at 1 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Elders Buster Mullins and Frank Newsome officiating. Burial will follow in the Bartley & Hill Cemetery on Big Ridge near Tarpon.
     Active pallbearers will be Gregg Fuller, Jeff Fuller, Jason Fuller, Jeremy Fuller, Jordan Fuller and Eugene Viers.
     Grundy Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


George David Trent
(Grundy)

     George David Trent, 90, of Grundy, formerly of McAndrews, KY, died Monday, March 17, 2008 at Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy.
     Born July 17, 1917 in McAndrews, he was the son of the late T.J. Trent and Dollie May Trent. He was a graduate of Belfry High School, Pikeville Junior College and received a bachelor of philosophy degree from the University of Toledo followed by two years of graduate work in English Literature at Ohio State University where in December 1940 he received a master of arts degree. In June of 1941, he volunteered for the military draft. For the duration of the war, he served in North Africa and Italy, attaining the rank of captain in the Army Air Force. Following the war, he relocated to New York City to spend the remainder of his life employed at the New York Times.
      In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-mother, Cora Hackney Trent; 12 brothers and sisters and six step-brothers and sisters.
      He is survived by one sister, Naomi Trent May and husband, Raymond May, of Grundy.
      Services will be held today (Thursday), March 20 at 11 a.m. at the graveside with Minister Jeff Deel officiating. Burial will follow in Coeburn Point Cemetery in Huddy, KY. DAV rites will be performed by Belfry Chapter #141.
      Pallbearers will be family and friends.
      R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry was in charge of arrangements.

Janet R. Keene
(Christiansburg, VA)

     Janet R. Stacy Keene, of Christiansburg, formerly of Buchanan County, died Thursday, February 28, 2008 following an extended illness.
     She was preceded in death by her father, Henry Stacy, and her mother, Evelyn Stacy, who had resided in Hurley.
     She is survived by her husband, Bruce Keene; two daughters, Ashley Keene Graham of Radford and Amanda Keene Gravley of Roanoke; one brother, Roger Stacy, of Hurley; four grandchildren, Zach, Grace, Elijah and Faith Gravley, all of Roanoke; several aunts, uncles, nephews and nieces.
     A memorial service was held Sunday, March 9 at Christiansburg Pentecostal Holiness Church.


Robert E. Rasnake
(Bee, VA)

     Robert E. Rasnake, 77, of Bee, died Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy.
     Born in Russell County, he was a son of the late Benjamin and Tina Barton Rasnake. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of UMWA 7170. He was a retired coal miner and was of the Freewill Baptist faith.
     In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Walter, Elbert, Arnold, Pierce, Ervin, Graham, Hubbard, Junior and Oakley Rasnake, and sisters, Mable Rasnake, Lucille Cook and Sarah Rasnake.
    He is survived by his wife, Lorraine Rasnake; four sons, David (Carol) Rasnake of Haysi, Randy (Christy) Rasnake of Clintwood, Danny (Mary) Rasnake of Rosedale and Richard Rasnake of the home; two daughters, Diane Boozer of Coeburn and Christine (Junior) Gilbert of Davenport; two brothers, Curvin (Molly) Rasnake of Big Rock and Lawrence "Shorty" (Mary) Rasnake of Bristol; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
     Services were held Friday, March 14 at Haysi Funeral Home with Don Sullivan officiating. Burial followed in Ketron Memorial Gardens in Lebanon. Dickenson County VFW #8979, DAV Chapter 35 and American Legion Post #227 conducted military graveside rites.
     Pallbearers were grandsons, nephews and Mike Stump.
     Haysi Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Bridgette Carmella Swiney
(Haysi, VA)

     Bridgette C. Swiney, 48, of Haysi, died Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at Dickenson Community Hospital in Clintwood.
     Born May 13, 1959, she was the daughter of Estil and Mona Rowe Hill.
     She was preceded in death by two sisters, Irish Marie Hill and Dorothy Yates.
     In addition to her parents, she is survived by a daughter, Lisha (Henry) Casterline of Clinchco; one son, Joseph (Stephanie) Deel of Edgewater, FL; six grandchildren, Brianna, Hannah and Henry Jr. Casterline of Clinchco and Kailey, Jayden and Savanah Deel of Edgewater, FL; two sisters, Rita (Chester) Keen of Dickenson County and Donna Stanley of Scott County; two brothers, Ronald (Nina) Hill of Dickenson County and Thomas (Jeannie) Hill of Scott County; several nieces and nephews.
      Services were held Saturday, March 15 at Haysi Funeral Home with Elder David O'quinn officiating.
     A graveside service was held Sunday, March 16 at the Hill Cemetery at Clintwood.
     Pallbearers were Joshua Yates, Cody Yates, Nathan Hill, Rick Pardgen, David Hill and Samuel Puckett.
     Honorary pallbearers were Henry Casterline and Marcus Gilbert.
     Haysi Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


David Jack Stiltner
(Bon Aqua, VA)

     David Jack Stiltner, 66, of Bon Aqua, died Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at his home.
     Born September 30, 1941 in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Dave and Chloe Slone Stiltner. He was a veteran of the United States Army and had been employed by the Pentagon. He was a retired equipment operator in the mining industry. He was a member of Bethlehem Old Regular Baptist Church in Grundy.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Bonnie Stumbo, Gaynell Stiltner and Leon Spahr; and eight brothers, Amos, Hassell, Fred, Lawrence, Ralph, John, Leonard and Harmen Stiltner.
     He is survived by his wife, Lynda  Cude Stiltner; two sons, David Ray Stiltner and wife, Amy, and Billy Frank Stiltner and wife, Juanita, all of Dickson, TN; one daughter, Kelly Lane and husband, Ricky, of Abingdon; five sisters, Julie Poland and husband, Dave, of Grundy, Alice Yates and husband, Vada, of Grundy, Rachel Clark of Clawson, MI, Brenda Crawford and husband, Harley, of Dickson and Lucy Dudley and husband, Jim, of Dickson; five grandchildren, Breanna, Kaitlyn, Anthony, Austin and Logan.
      Services were held Saturday, March 15  at Taylor Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Jim Blankenship, Bro. Tommy Luther and Bro. William McClanahan officiating. Interment followed in the Myatt-Petty Cemetery in Hickman County, Tenn.
