Attorney General Visits County, Says State in Good Shape

by Brandon Dye
Staff Reporter

Virginia Attorney General Bob McDonnell paid a visit to Grundy on Monday to have lunch and discuss issues at the Appalachian School of Law.
Along with some community leaders and members of the ASL faculty, McDonnell conversed with residents of Buchanan County and answered some important questions about Southwest Virginia's economic development and industry plans.
"I am delighted to be here," McDonnell said to the crowd.
Virginia did have some problems dealing with certain issues, McDonnell said, but the state is still in good shape.
"Virginia did have a billion dollar deficit this year," McDonnell said. "We've had some battles with that this year."
On the other hand, McDonnell informed everyone that Virginia was named one of the best business states in the nation as well as named the best state in the nation to raise children.
McDonnell said he tries to make a trip to Southwest Virginia at least two times a year, adding, "I try to make it to Grundy at least once a year."

Buchanan No. 1 Mine Resumes Production

by Scotty Wampler
News Editor

CONSOL's Buchanan No. 1 mine at Mavisdale has resumed full production, according to the company.
The mine, idle for eight months following two separate roof collapses in July, had recently undergone necessary repairs to the ventilation and electrical systems. The facility was evacuated immediately following the 9:43 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. collapses on July 9. The section of underground mine where the roof cavings occurred had already been mined and was no longer in use. Approximately 120 workers were present at the mine, and no injuries were reported.
The collapses created compression air waves that disrupted ventilation controls along several nearby mine entries.
