Gladys
Bea Hess, 79, of Oakwood, died Thursday, February 23, 2006 in
a Bristol, TN hospital.
Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late
Harve and Stella Cook Ratliff. A lifelong resident of the
area, she was a member of Rowe Free Pentecostal Holiness
Church and was formerly the co-owner and operator of S&R
Cleaners.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two
sisters, Fay Crow and Ola Gay Lester, and one brother, H.C.
Ratliff.
She is survived by her son, Harless Wayne Hess and wife,
Norma Jean, of Marvin; four sisters, Shirley Sykes and Geneva
Constantine of Florida, Janette Addison of Marvin and Katie
Anderson of Dry Fork; two brothers, Earl Ratliff and Claude
Ratliff, both of Mt. Heron; several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Sunday in Honaker with the Revs. Troy
Street and Ancil Childress officiating. Interment followed in
the Ratliff Cemetery on Young’s Branch.
Pallbearers were relatives and friends.

Henry Stacy, 73, of Grundy, died Saturday, February 25, 2006
in Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy.
Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Adam
Stacy and Sally Stacy Stacy. He was of the Old Regular Baptist
faith and was a retired coal miner.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one
sister, Tennessee Crum; and seven brothers, Walter, Ernie,
Lee, Virgil, Benton, Roy and Ralph Stacy.
He is survived by his wife, Loraine Charles Stacy; two
daughters, Joyce Ann Crawford and husband, Everett, of Big
Rock and Sandra Ward and husband, Ricky, of Big Rock; five
sons, Johnny Stacy, Douglas Stacy, Jimmy Stacy and Christopher
Stacy, all of Grundy and Billy Stacy of Seattle, WA; two
brothers, Boyd Stacy and Estil Stacy, both of Grundy; four
grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services were held Tuesday, February 28 at North Springs Old
Regular Baptist Church at Wolford with Elders Delbert Justus,
Josh Justus Jr., Toy Looney, James Stacy, Howard Daniels and
Roger Coleman officiating. Burial followed in the Justus
Cemetery on Brushey.
Pallbearers were family and friends.
Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home, Grundy, was in charge of
arrangements.

Mae Smith Wallace, 84, of the Home Creek section of Buchanan
County, died Friday, February 24, 2006 at her home.
Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late
Joseph Whetsil Smith and Sarah Thompson Smith. She was a
member of Buchanan First Assembly Church of God at Big Rock,
where she served as Sunday School teacher.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her
husband, Robert Wallace; one daughter, Lillian Ruth Wallace
Altizer; two sons, Ernie Steve Wallace and Charles Ralph
Wallace; two sisters and five brothers.
She is survived by two sisters, Edna Smith Coleman of Grundy
and Thelma Smith Hughes of Portsmouth; two brothers, Edward
Smith and Dorsey Whetsil Smith, both of Grundy; one
daughter-in-law, Donna Marie Wallace of Grundy; two grandsons,
two step-granddaughters and six great-grandchildren.
Services were held Monday, February 27 at Shortridge-Ramey
Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Johnny Cooper officiating.
Burial followed in the Ramey Cemetery at Conaway.
Active pallbearers were Kenny Hall, Tommy Hall, Delmer Hall,
Donnie Hall, Gary Coleman and David Clevinger.
Honorary pallbearers were Clinton Lester, Roscoe Lester,
Steve May, Terry Williams, Wendell Roberts, Jimmy John Howard,
Ronald Coleman, Noah Vandyke, Haven Stiltner and Basil Davis.

Ruth
Hunsaker Street, 89, of Grundy, died Friday, February 24, 2006
at Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands following an
extended illness.
Born in Norton, she was a daughter of the late William and
Lillian Hunsaker. She graduated from Lynch High School in
Kentucky and served as an Army WAC during World War II.
Following the war, she and her husband, Clarence, resided in
Grundy where they operated Grundy Credit Jewelers for many
years. She was a long-time member of Grundy Baptist Church,
the Grundy Woman’s Club and the Buchanan County Friends of the
Library.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her
husband, Clarence C. Street; one brother, Nelson Hunsaker; and
one sister, Clarice Staley.
She is survived by one daughter, Carmen Gayle Street White
and husband, Joe, of Grundy; one sister, Faye Pobst of
Roanoke; one grandson, Austin White and wife, Linda, of
Richmond; one great-granddaughter, Katie White of Richmond,
several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held Monday, February 27 at Clinch
Valley Memorial Cemetery, Richlands, with the Rev. Howell
Scott officiating.
Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of
contributions to the Buchanan County Public Library.

James Cook, 17, of Webb Branch, died Sunday, February 26, 2006
in Pikeville, KY.
A native of Richlands, he had lived most of his life in
Abingdon. He was of the Church of Christ faith and was a
senior at Twin Valley High School at Pilgrim’s Knob. Upon
graduation, he planned to attend Nashville Auto Diesel College
this fall.
He is survived by his father, Jim Cook, and Beth Dotson, of
Webb Branch; his mother and step-father, Deborah and Mike
Baumgardner, of Bristol, VA; one sister, Carla Cook of
Washington, DC; one step-sister, Lauren Baumgardner, of
Bristol, TN; one step-brother, Travis Baumgardner, of Bristol,
TN; one half-sister, Kathryn Cook of Vansant; paternal
grandparents, Bob and Ruby McAllister of Bristol, VA; maternal
grandparents, Elwood and Jean Thomas of Meadowview; additional
grandparents, Shirley and Mikey Wheeler, of Bristol, VA and
Don Baumgardner, also of Bristol, VA.
Services were held Wednesday, March 1 in Forest Hills Chapel
of Farris Funeral Service on the grounds of Forest Hills
Memory Gardens, Abingdon. Entombment followed in Forest Hills
Colonial Chapel Mausoleum.
Pallbearers were Chad Mullins, Travis Mullins, Brandon
Matney, Justin Matney, Canaan Stevens, Douglas Cole, Colten
Neal Allison and Ralph Wyatt Justice.

William Stevenson, 56, of Richmond, died Sunday at his home.
A native of Pittsburgh, he was the son of Dulcie Reising
Stevenson of Monroe, OH and the late William Stevenson. He
was an auto sales general manager and was an Army and Air
Force veteran and a member of the Cathedral of Praise in Mt.
Sterling.
He is survived by his wife, Karen Justus Stevenson; three
daughters, Jessica Short of Archbold, OH, Jacqueline Hill of
Amelia, OH and Stephanie Stevenson of Milford, OH; one son,
Sean Stevenson of Cincinnati; one sister, Karen Ward of
Fairfield, OH; nine grandchildren, one niece and two
nephews.
Services were held Wednesday at Scobee Funeral Home with
the Rev. John Hobson officiating. Burial followed in the
Winchester Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Michael Short, Keith Hill, Sean
Stevenson, Adam Ward, Tony Ward and Kurt Brown.

"Jim" Edwards, 61, of Clintwood, died Tuesday, February 21,
2006 at Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City, TN.
Born in Dickenson County, he was a son of the late Ora and
Ida Fuller Edwards. He served in the U.S. Army and was a
disabled coal miner.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a
sister, Macil Bartley.
He is survived by one son, Andrew (Veronica) Edwards of
Clintwood; one daughter, Mitzi (David) Clevinger of Haysi;
two sisters, Jeanette Tiller of Rosedale and Vera Miller of
Bristol, VA; one brother, Evon Edwards of Havana, FL; and
five grandchildren.
A song service was held Friday, February 24 at Haysi
Funeral Home.

Marie Mullins, 67, of the Little Lick section of Haysi, died
Saturday, February 25, 2006 at Bristol Regional Medical
Center.
Born in Dickenson County, she was a daughter of the late
George L. and Melster Mullins Sweeney. She was a homemaker
and was of the Old Regular Baptist faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by
her husband, Martin Mullins and a sister, Mary Colley.
She is survived by two sons, Elder Rick (Leshia) Mullins
of Haysi and Joe (Sherry) Mullins of Marion; one daughter,
Melissa (Jeffrey) Owens of Haysi; two brothers, Bill
(Ernestine) Sweeney and Arthur (Melster) Sweeney, both of
Haysi; two sisters, Shelby Jean (Clarence) Mullins and
Bonnie Deel, both of Haysi; four grandchildren.
Services were held Monday, February 27 at Haysi Funeral
Home with Elders Ralph Mullins, Aven Viers and Rick Mullins
officiating. Entombment followed in the Mullins-Sweeney
Cemetery at Haysi.

County, died Tuesday, February 21, 2006 at Virginia Hospital
Center in Arlington.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, James Michael
Coleman.
He attended Grundy High School and was the son of Burton
Coleman and Ruth Ellen Lambert Coleman.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Marie Coleman; one
daughter, Betty J. Fraley, of Fredericksburg; two sons,
James M. Coleman of Ocala, FL and C. Wayne Coleman of
Fredericksburg; one grandson, one granddaughter and two
great-grandsons.
Services were held Friday, February 24 at Found and Sons
Funeral Chapels-Cremation Service with the Rev. Bryan P.
Brooks officiating. Interment followed in Stafford Memorial
Park.

Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late
Cornelius and Lillie Deel Owens. She was a homemaker and

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by
her husband, Elder Roscoe O’quinn; one grandson, Jason
O’quinn; several brothers and sisters.
She is survived by four daughters, Dorothy (Freddie) Dicky
of Maxie, Ruth (Jim) Wallace of Clintwood, Ann (Bill) Owens
of Birchleaf and Wanda (John) Coppins of Sterling Heights,
MI; five sons, Eddie O’quinn, Troy (Ann) O’quinn, Clayton
(Brenda) O’quinn, all of Haysi, Billy (Diana) O’quinn of
Birchleaf and Thomas O’quinn of Bluefield, VA; several
grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren.

Home with Elder Arnold Bailey officiating. Burial followed
in the O’quinn-Deel Cemetery at Rt. 2, Haysi.

Donnie Lee Lowe

Lee Lowe, 55, of the Baptist Valley section of Cedar Bluff,
died Tuesday, February 21, 2006 at a Tazewell hospital
following a sudden illness.
Born in Richlands, he was the son of the late Raymond and
Geneva Ball Lowe, both Tazewell County natives. He had made
his home in Baptist Valley all his life and was a retired
miner for Island Creek Coal Corporation VP #6 and
Consolidated Coal Corporation VP #8. He was a graduate of
Richlands High School’s class of 1969 and was former
president and field representative for District 28 of the
UMWA. He had just retired from six years of service as the
western district representative for the board of supervisors
of Tazewell County. He was a member of UMWA Local #2232 at
Oakwood, Casey Shortt VFW Post #9640 in Richlands, Vietnam
Veterans of America Blue-Gray Chapter #628 of Princeton, WV
and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was a
U.S. Army Vietnam veteran, having been decorated with the
National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal,
Vietnam Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal and the
Bronze Star.
He is survived by his wife, Alma Alsbrook Lowe; one
daughter, Donita Presnell and husband, Jeff, of Johnson
City, TN; two sons, Travis Lowe and wife, Jessi, of Roper,
NC and Chad Lowe of the home; one sister, Phyllis Dotson of
Bristol, VA; two brothers, Jerry Lowe and wife, Sharon and
Gary Lowe and wife, Jennifer, all of Cedar Bluff; two
grandchildren.
Graveside services were held Friday, February 24 at
Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum, Claypool Hill, with the
Rev. Preston Mathena officiating. Interment followed.
Members of Casey-Shortt VFW Post #9640 conducted military
graveside rites.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Carlos
Yates; her second husband, Robert Davies; her father,
Charles Adam Clayborne; and brothers, Raymond and Johnny
Clayborne.
She is survived by her mother, Lois Reeves Clayborne of
Claypool Hill; four sons, Daniel, Darrell and wife, Debbie,
Doug and wife, Michelle, Jerry and wife, Denise, of South
Carolina; five sisters, Peggy Davidson of Bluefield, VA,
Mrs. Brownie (Hattie) Hayes of Viewtown, Mrs. Jerry (Joyce)
Jude of North Tazewell, Mrs. Mike (Dorothy) Ennis of Summit,
MS and Mrs. Coy (Charlotte) Richardson of Claypool Hill;
three brothers, Donald Clayborne and wife, Patricia of

Ann Clifton Horn, 85, of Maxwell, died February 21, 2006 at
a Richlands hospital following an extended illness.
Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late
Ellis and Vicie Vandyke Clifton. She had made her home in
Buchanan County where she operated a small country store
before moving to Tazewell County in 1976. She was a member
of the Cedar Bluff Community Church at Claypool Hill.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by
an infant daughter, Sandra Kay Horn; one grandson, Jonathan
Eric Horn; one brother, Walter Clifton; and five sisters,
Cassie Irene Horn, Stella Addison, Callie Keen, Donna
McClure and Lucinda Horn.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Henry Edward
Horn; three sons, James Horn and wife, Ruth, of Grundy, Paul
Horn and wife, Shirley, of Pounding Mill, and Bill Horn and
wife, Sandra, of Cedar Bluff; three daughters, Lorraine Duty
and husband, Charles, of Grundy, Dewanda Horn of Maxwell,
and Darlene Bowling and husband, Ray, of Richlands; two
brothers, Bruce Clifton and wife, Betty, of Bear, DE and
Ellis Clifton and wife, Edna of North Tazewell; four
sisters, Mae Price and husband, Bill, of Wilmington, NC,
Hettie Krazeswski and husband, Hank, of Bear, DE, Mona
Biddle of New Castle, DE and Myrtle McGhee of Pounding Mill;
sister-in-law, Virgie Matney of Doran; 10 grandchildren and
10 great-grandchildren.

Smith and Walter Rowe officiating. Interment followed in
Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill.

in a Richlands hospital.
Born in Davenport, she was a daughter of Ines Sullivan
Ball of Davenport and the late Roy Ball. A lifelong resident
of the area, she was of the Holiness faith. She was a 1972
graduate of Council High School.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband,
Randall Combs; three step-sons, Mark Combs and wife, Angela,
and Matthew Combs, all of Council and Barry Combs and wife,
Jennifer, of Waterloo, IA; five sisters, Wilma Sue Greene of
Davenport, her twin sister, Adeline Presley and husband,
Harvey Loman, of Rosedale, Pauline Austin and husband,
Donnie, of Davenport, Betty Louise Compton and husband,
Ronnie, of Grundy and Lena Marie Presley of Lebanon; four
step-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held today (Thursday) at 11 a.m. in
Honaker with the Rev. Roy Lee Wilson officiating. Interment
will follow in Ketron Memorial Gardens in Lebanon.
Pallbearers will be Harvey Loman Presley, Ronnie Compton,
Farley Combs, Garrett Barton, Tolbert Combs and Paul Combs.
Honorary pallbearers will be Adam Presley and Donnie

Ann Rife, 79, of Rt. 2, Haysi, died Monday, February 27,
2006 at the home of her niece, Vicki Yates, in Roanoke.
Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late
Bart and Josie Owens Deel. She was baptized into the Old
Regular Baptist faith in October 1948.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by
her husband, Crockett Rife; five brothers, Author, James
Arvil, Cornelius, Herbert and Harold Deel, and one sister,
Lydia Margaret Oquinn.
She is survived by one brother, Andy Deel, of Freeport,
PA; three sisters, Lona Blankenship of Grundy, Birchie (Tom)
Fuller of Tazewell and Elva (David) Dales of Greensprings,
OH; one step-son, Roy (Ruby) Rife of Spruce Pine; five
step-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, several nieces and
nephews.
Services will be held today (Thursday), March 2 at 11 a.m.
at Russell Prater Old Regular Baptist Church with Elders
Earl Dean Yates, Roger Coleman, Denny Deel and Scott Boyd
officiating. Burial will follow in the Bart Deel Cemetery at
Rt. 2, Haysi.
Pallbearers will be family and friends.
