Blackburn
(Hurley)
Luther (Junior) Blackburn, 79, of Hurley, died Tuesday,
March 6, 2007 at his home following an extended illness.
Born
in Matewan, WV, he was the son of the late Elder John Henry
and Marah Marie Wolford Blackburn. He was a resident of
Buchanan County most of his life and a member of Sulphur
Springs Primitive Baptist Church since 1961 where he served
as a deacon for 26 years. He served in the United States
Army during the Korean Conflict, was a member of the
Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion Post No.
164. He worked for General Motors and was a retired coal
truck driver.
In
addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three
brothers, Albert, Chester and Charles Blackburn; one infant
sister; and one infant brother.
He
is survived by his wife, Emma Jean Conley Blackburn; one
daughter, Patricia Jean Blackburn and husband, Elder Gary D.
Justus of Hurley; one son, Terry Luther and wife, Debra
Blackburn, of Hurley; two brothers, Grover and wife, Lillian
Blackburn of Hurley and Harold and wife, Mabel Blackburn, of
Flinton, MI; five grandsons, Dennis Justus, Shane Blackburn,
Aaron Justus, Eric Blackburn and Justin Blackburn; several
nieces and nephews.
Services
were held Saturday, March 10 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel
with Elders Brian Moore, Estel Hackney, David Jacobs, J.C.
Hager and Shawn Dotson officiating. Burial followed in
Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock. Full military rites
were held at the cemetery by members of John Ratliff Post
No. 164 of the American Legion.
Active
pallbearers were Jimmy Justus, Gary Justus, Danny Blackburn,
Josh Hackney, Bobby Taylor, Leroy Rife, Greg Blackburn,
Chester Paul Blackburn, Dale Blackburn, Steve Blackburn,
Donald Lester and grandsons.

Baker, Ron Moore and Burlin Blackburn.

Ronald Chambers
(Maxie)
Kenneth Ronald (Ronnie) Chambers, 68, of Maxie, died
Saturday, March 10, 2007 at Buchanan General Hospital in
Grundy following an extended illness.
Born
in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Earnest (Wag)
and Bea Viola Wyatt Chambers. He was a lifelong resident of
Buchanan County and a member of Harman Memorial Baptist
Church. He was a retired employee of Harman Mining Company
and was a member of the UMWA Local Union 7025.
In
addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one
brother, James (Jimmy) Chambers.
He
is survived by his wife, Charlotte Stiltner Chambers; two
sons, Kenneth Ronald Jr. and wife, Cindy Chambers of Maxie
and Eric Dwayne Chambers of Abingdon; two brothers, Charles
and wife, Jackie Chambers of Vansant and Harold and wife,
Betty Chambers of Roanoke; one special uncle, Winford
Chambers of Grundy; one sister-in-law, Imel Chambers Little
of Grundy; and two grandchildren, Matthew Kenneth Chambers
and Julie Ann and husband, Jason Wallace.
Services
were held Tuesday, March 13 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel
with Minister Shea Shrader officiating. Burial followed in
Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.

Wesley Ryan Taylor, 19, of Hurley, died Saturday, March 10,
2007 at Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy.
Born
in Buchanan County, he was the son of Kerry Russell and
Elizabeth Ann McClanahan Taylor of Hurley. He was a lifelong
resident of Buchanan County and worked for OSMOSE Company.
He
was preceded in death by paternal grandmother, Lantha
Clevinger Taylor; one aunt, Peggy Sue McClanahan; and three
uncles, Christopher McClanahan, Christopher and Terry
Taylor.
In
addition to his parents, he is survived by one sister,
Katrina Michelle Taylor of Hurley; maternal grandparents,
James and Ethel McClanahan of Hurley; paternal grandfather,
Harold Taylor of Richlands; several aunts, uncles and family
members.
Services
will be held today (Thursday), March 15 at 1 p.m. at Kelsa
Church of Christ with Ministers Verner Blankenship, Steve
Dawson and E.C. Honaker officiating. Burial will follow in
the McClanahan Family Cemetery on the left fork of Paw Paw
near Hurley.

Nella Jean Matney, 67, of Rt. 1, Vansant, died Friday, March
9, 2007 at her home.
Born
in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Arnold
and Maude Arrington Owens. She was a homemaker and member of
the Sandy Basin Primitive Baptist Church.
In
addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two
sisters, Beulah Viers and Gail Woodard; two brothers,
Bernard and Freddie; and two brothers-in-law, Darrell and
Clovis Owens.
She
is survived by her husband, Paul Matney; one daughter, Dena
(Marty) Bostic of Rosedale; one son, Jeffery (Karen) Matney
of Kingsport, TN; three grandchildren, Aaron (Marissa)
Bostic and Jacob and Emily Matney; two sisters, Irene Owens
of Prater and Wilma Owens of Sterling; two brothers-in-law,
Fred Viers and Jack Woodard; special caretaker, Maudie
Gilbert.
Services
were held Sunday, March 11 at Haysi Funeral Home with Elders
Danny Smith, Darrell Davis and Victor Chuch officiating.
Burial followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill.

Jack Eugene Justus, 65, of Roanoke, formerly of Hurley, died
Tuesday, March 6, 2007 at Carillion Roanoke Memorial
Hospital.
Born
in Hurley, he was a son of the late James A. Justus and Mary
Lester Justus. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was of the
Pentecostal faith.
In
addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one
sister, Dora Justus Blankenship; four brothers, Edgar
Justus, Billy Paul Justus, Earl Justus and Bobby Justus.
He
is surived by his special friend and caregiver, Larry
Sawyers of Tazewell; two daughters, Lisa Lynn Justus of
Roanoke and Pamela Guffery of Panama City, FL; two sons,
James Michael Justus and Joseph Patrick Justus and wife,
Rhonda, all of Roanoke; four sisters, Dottie Wolford and
husband, Kenneth, Marie Smith and husband, Bill, Mary
Blankenship and Ora Hilton, all of Hurley; two brothers,
Harold Justus and wife, Pauline, Dan Justus and wife, Gail,
all of Hurley; two grandchildren, Travis Ray Justus and
Britney Nichole Justus; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral
services were held Saturday, March 10 at Peery & St.
Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Daniel
Cornwell officiating. Burial followed in Grandview Memory
Gardens in Bluefield where graveside rites were conducted by
members of Barns Beavers VFW Post #7136 of Tazewell.

Roscoe Reuben Deskins, Sr., 86, of Raven, died Wednesday,
March 7, 2007.
He
was the son of the late Walter and Alice Matney Deskins.
He was a United States Army veteran of World War II, was a
retired coal miner and member of the UMWA.
In
addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his
wife, Margaret Butcher Deskins; one brother, John Deskins;
and two sisters, Agnes Jewell and Virginia Matney.
He
is survived by two sons, Roscoe Reuben Deskins, Jr. and
wife, Lois, of Paintlick and Calvin Eddie Deskins and
wife, Shelby, of Marvin; five grandchildren, 13
great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; one
brother, Beacher Deskins of Claypool Hill; one sister,
Exie Schilling of Roanoke; several nieces and nephews.
Services
were held Saturday, March 10 at Buchanan Funeral Service
Chapel at Keen Mountain with the Rev. Ancil Childress and
the Rev. James Horton officiating. Burial followed in
Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill. Military
graveside rites were conducted by Casey-Shortt VFW Post
9640.

William Kinnis "Ken" Duty, 71, of Warren, MI,
died Thursday, February 8, 2007 in Henry Ford Bi-County
Hospital in Warren.
Born
in Pearly, he retired as a screw machine operator from
Cape Industries in Warren following 42 years of service.
He was a musician, hunter, fisherman and woodworker.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, Kelsa and Jonah
Duty; and siblings, Ellis Duty, Pearl Layne, Bunyon Duty,
Ira Duty, Truman Duty and Virginia Duty.
He
is survived by his wife, Donica; children, Mary Kay
(Richard) Kennedy of Sterling Heights, Rita (Thomas) Bondy
of Clinton Township and Anna (Brian) Pefley of Macomb
Township; grandchildren, Billie Jo Bondy, Bridgette Marie
Bondy, Janelle E., Jessica K. and Jaclyn D. Cumpf, Brianna
G. and Kenneth B. Pefley; great-grandchildren, Destiny
Yenson and Bella Bondy; siblings, Arthur Duty of Vansant,
Lou Stiltner of Grundy, Alvie "Kiester" Duty of

Compton
(Bristol,
VA)
Dollie Compton, 75, of Bristol, VA, (formerly of Buchanan
County), died Thursday, March 8, 2007 at her home.
Born
in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late John
Frank and Cynthia Evelyn Peck Smith. She spent most of her
life in Alexandria, prior to moving to Bristol, VA where
she attended Suburban Christian Church. She was formerly
employed as a cashier at A&P Grocery Store in
Alexandria for 10 years.
In
addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one
granddaughter, Monica Chambers Bowling.
She
is survived by her husband, Junior Compton; five children,
Sandra Chambers of Lusby, MD, Patricia Compton of
Annandale, Danny Compton of Alexandria, Dean Compton of
Fredericksburg and Deloris Compton of Woodbridge; three
sisters, Ada Compton of Vandalia, OH, Maria Catlett of
Essex, MD and Ruby Morgan of Reisterstown, MD; nine
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services
were held Tuesday in Honaker with Pastor Richard Parnell
officiating. Interment followed in the Frank Smith
Cemetery on Big A Mountain.
