The Wreckage After A Helicopter Clipped a Power Line in the Council Area Last Thursday.  (Staff photo/Scotty Wampler.)

Helicopter Crashes On Hurricane Creek

by JoBeth Wampler
Staff Reporter

Federal officials are still investigating a helicopter crash that occurred on Hurricane Creek last Thursday afternoon.
The pilots of the helicopter, Matthew Cobhan, of Kermit, WV, and Ivan Mooser, of Logan, WV, were med-flighted to Bristol Regional Medical Center after their company helicopter clipped a power line and plummeted to the ground.
At around 4:25 p.m. on Thursday, March 8, the men had landed briefly off Route 600 on Hurricane Creek in Davenport to correct some GPS and computer problems. But, as they took off again, the helicopter rotor struck a primary and neutral electrical tap line, just off the main power line, which caused the helicopter to crash into the field below.
The helicopter, manufactured by Sud Aviation and owned by Mike's Contracting in Chapmanville, WV, incurred substantial damage. It is regarded a total loss.
According to a report by Virginia State Police Trooper R.A. Stiltner, the company was subcontracted to perform leak detection checks of gas sites and lines and took off from Logan County Airport in West Virginia.
Cobhan and Mooser were med-flighted to Bristol Regional Hospital for precautionary reasons and were released the next day.
The Federal Aviation Administration has ruled the incident an accident due to the extent of damage that resulted, according to FAA Public Affairs official Jim Peters.
A National Transportation Safety Board investigation into the cause of the accident is pending and a preliminary report is expected this week. However, the board will spend the next months compiling the facts of the accident and will issue a probable cause or fact finding report within four to five months.

Democrats Will Have Full Slate of Candidates; Some Races Contested
June 2 Convention to Decide Nominees

by Cathy St. Clair
News Editor

Six more Democrats beat the deadline last week, filing with the Democrat party to seek June nominations for supervisor or clerk.
Chris Horn and Pat Imel, both of whom had previously announced their intent to file, made it official, filing the required paperwork and filing fees with the party, according to Democrat Party Chairman Vern Presley.
They join incumbent Beverly (Bev) Tiller and Tony Matney, who previously filed with the party seeking the Democrat nomination for clerk.
Additionally, four more Democrats joined the race for supervisor with Janie Owens filing to seek the South Grundy Board of Supervisors seat; Christopher Charles and Incumbent Pat Justus joining the Knox District supervisor’s race where Trey Adkins had previously announced and filed; and Carl Frankie Landreth joining the Rocklick supervisor’s race where incumbent David Ratliff had previously filed.
Additional Democrat candidates who filed were as follows:
Sheriff: Randy Ashby, Tim Potter and Pat Wolford.
  Commissioner of Revenue: Jay Rife.
  Treasurer: Incumbent Bill Keene.
  Commonwealth Attorney: Incumbent Sheila Tolliver.
North Grundy Supervisor: Incumbent Carroll Branham.
  Garden Supervisor: Berlin Viers.
  Hurricane Supervisor: William P. Harris.
  Prater Supervisor: Steve O’Quinn.
Democrats will meet June 2 to select a full slate of candidates for the November election. Precinct meetings to select delegates for that convention are set this weekend. A total of 242 delegates will be named among the 17 precincts with the allocation based on Democrat votes cast in the 2006 general election
