Wave
Wrestlers
Claim
Four Dual
Matches
Including
Big Win
Over
Brentsville
District
Grundy to
Host SWD
Tournament
Next Week |
|
Brandon Hankins, Jarrett Landis, Matt
Stiltner, Andy Stiltner and Derek Anderson turned defeat into victory as Grundy
avenged a loss and closed out the regular season with four dual meet victories
last week.
The highlight was a clean
sweep of two of the Golden Wave’s top Group AA rivals. Grundy defeated host
Turner Ashby 43-27 and avenged a January setback by whipping Brentsville
District, 44-27, Saturday at TAHS, near Bridgewater.
Wednesday at Graham, the Golden
Wave dominated Southwest District rivals Graham (58-16) and Tazewell (53-6).
No other win was sweeter for
the Wave than Saturday’s win over Brentsville, which avenged a 49-15 loss in
late January.
Hankins (119
pounds), Matt Stiltner (215), Andy Stiltner (275), Anderson (103) and Landis
(130) all defeated individuals each had lost to the previous time, and all five
got their revenge in impressive fashion.
Hankins won a 9-3
decision over Martin (first name not available). Matt Stiltner won a 2-1
overtime decision over highly-ranked Matt Tudor at 215 pounds.
“Brandon Hankins
got us going,” Grundy Coach Travis Fiser said. “He was ahead the last time, but
he got caught on his back. Brandon didn’t show any weaknesses. He came out wide
open and stayed after the guy.
“He was definitely
in control the while match, he dominated the guy. It was our first win of the
dual and it got off us on the right track. Momentum is important against a tough
team. We did a great job to end the dual season.”
Andy Stiltner
pinned the man who pinned him earlier with a first period fall (1:51). Landis,
who lost a 10-7 decision earlier to Delauder, won a 16-1 tech fall over the
Brentsville 130-pounder.
Anderson turned a major
decision around and pinned Tucker Velez, the third-ranked 103-pounder in
Virginia Group AA, in 2:31.
“Andy Stiltner got pinned
there last time, and he ends up pinning the kid this time,” Fiser said. “Derek
Anderson (lost) a major decision and he turned that around and got the pin.
Jarrett Landis really rose to the occasion in his match.”

Haysi Girls
Clinch BDD Regular Season Crown |
|
|
by Scotty
Wampler
Staff

Haysi’s
Lady
Tigers
clinched
the
BDD
regular
season
crown
Tuesday
night
with
a
72-27
thumping
of
Hurley.
The Tigers (17-4, 7-0) will enter the
BDD
tournament
as
the
district’s
top
seed,
earning
a
first-round
bye.
“That was important,” Haysi coach Ron
Compton
said
of
his
squad
wrapping
up
the
number
1
seed.
The Lady Tigers will attempt to
post
an
undefeated
district
record
Friday
as
they
host
Twin
Valley
to
conclude
their
regular
season
schedule.
After Tuesday’s game, Compton said his
team’s
focus
going
into
the
postseason
will
be on
Haysi,
not
the
rest
of
the
district.
“We’re not worried about who we
play
[in
the
tournament],”
he
said.
“We’re
just
worried
about
playing
well
ourselves.”
Whitney Compton lead the way
for
the
Tigers
at
Hurley,
netting
a
game-high
15
points.
Kendra Rowlett and Dana
Edwards
both
added
10
points
for
Haysi,
while
Jada
Edwards
and
Brenla
Hall
contributed
eight
and
nine
points,
respectively.
Hurley opened the game
strong,
trailing
by a
mere
four
points
late
in
the
first
quarter.
But a
12-point
Tiger
run
to
end
the
period
dashed
any
hopes
the
Rebels
had
of
making
the
game
a
competitive
contest.
By the end of the second
period,
Haysi
had
built
a
commanding
37-19
lead.
The second half was dismal at
best
for
Hurley,
as
the
Lady
Rebels
managed
a
single
field
goal
through
periods
three
and
four.
Celisha Allen led all Rebels with 11
points
in
the
game,
with
Tara
Hall
contributing
nine
points
of
her
own.
Brandie
Lester,
Patricia
Citarelli
and
Sarah
Justus
contributed
the
balance
of
Hurley’s
offense.
“Hurley has some good girls
that
are
going
to be
very
good,”
Compton
said
in
analyzing
his
team’s
win.
“But we start five seniors.”
At one point in the second
half,
Hurley
suffered
through
an
agonizing
22-point
run
by
the
Lady
Tigers.
Haysi
followed
that
run
by
scoring
six
unanswered
points
twice
more
before
the
end
of
the
fourth
quarter.
“Our overall experience
was
the
difference
in
the
game,”
Compton
said.
“That
was
key.”

Lady Wave
Clinches
at Least
Tie for
SWD
Regular
Season
Title |
|
|
|
|
|
Grundy clinched no worse than a
tie for the Southwest District
regular season title with a
convincing, 66-53, win over Graham
Thursday night at Graham Middle
School in Bluefield.
The victory means
the Lady Wave can clinch the SWD
crown outright and earn the right
to host next week’s girls district
tournament with a win tonight
(Thursday) at Richlands.
Kaitlyn Riley
scored 14 points, Brooke Shepherd
added 13 and seven rebounds, while
Samantha Rice contributed a
double-double for Grundy, which
used a 21-6 run in the second
quarter to build a 20-point, 36-16
halftime lead.
Defense was the
key, as the Lady Wave built a
51-28 advantage by the start of
the fourth period.
“We had a
pretty good defensive night,”
Grundy Coach Bill Christian said.
“We had a 28-point lead at one
point and we did a good job
against their leading scorer
(Kathleen Bourne).
“Kaitlyn Riley and
Samantha Rice continue to do a lot
of little things it takes to win
games. The last couple of games
we’ve played solid defense. The
girls are learning it make things
easier if we get after teams on
defense.”
Rice contributed 10
points, 17 rebounds and dished out
four assists for Grundy (15-3, 6-1
SWD). Ashley Cook and Kasey Bowman
combined for 17 points for the
Lady Wave.
Bourne scored 16 of
her game-high 28 points for
Graham. The G-Girls got 19 points
from Amber Carbaugh.
The SWD tournament
is Monday and Thursday, February
13 and 16.
