It
was
a
Groundhog
Day
win
that
Grundy
hopes
will
mean
at
least
three
--
if
not
six
--
more
weeks
of
basketball.
For
Graham,
it
was
more
like
a
famous
movie
theme.
Jimmy
Ashby
and
Joseph
Stephens
had
double-doubles
and
the
Golden
Wave
clinched
no
worse
than
a
tie
for
the
Southwest
District
regular
season
title
with
a
78-66
win
over
Graham
Friday
night.
It
was
the
10th
straight
win
for
Grundy
(15-4,
6-0),
which
avenged
one
of
its
four
losses
with
a
59-54
non-district
triumph
Tuesday
at
Abingdon.
One
more
district
win,
or
a
Richlands
loss,
gives
the
Wave
the
SWD
crown
outright,
and
the
Region
IV
playoff
berth
that
comes
with
it.
Grundy
closes
out
the
regular
season
at
home
this
week
against
SWD
rivals
Tazewell
(Wednesday)
and
Richlands
(Friday).
A
district
crown
means
the
Wave
would
host
the
SWD
tournament
next
week.
The
Wave
wasted
a
14-2
start
and
fell
behind
twice
before
scoring
41
points
in
the
final
9:52
in
Friday’s
win.
“We
forced
a
lot
of
long
passes,”
Grundy
coach
Greg
Rife
said.
“We
need
to
learn
you
can’t
go
for
blood
every
time.
I
told
them
to
settle
down.
You
can’t
fast
break
off
every
rebound.”
Cody
Billiter
scored
23
points,
while
Ashby
(22
points,
20
rebounds,
five
blocks)
and
Stephens
(16,
11,
3)
dominated
inside
for
Grundy.
Kevin
Thompson
led
three
double
figure
scorers
for
Graham
(4-15,
2-5)
with
23
points.
Grundy
turned
the
game
around
late
in
the
third
quarter
with
a
15-0
run
that
turned
a
41-37
deficit
into
a
52-41
lead.
It
was
the
second
time
that
the
G-Men
blew
a
late
lead
against
Grundy.
After
the
game
Graham
coach
Glynn
Carlock,
Jr.,
sounded
like
Bill
Murray
in
the
movie
“Groundhog
Day.”
“It
was
the
same
scenario
as
it
was
in
game
one
with
them,”
Carlock
said.
“We
have
a
(third)
quarter
lead,
and
in
a
one-minute
span
we
go
from
up
(four)
to
down
three.
“That’s
been
our
Achilles
Heel
all
season,
giving
up
a
long
run
and
not
being
able
to
answer
it
on
the
offensive
end.”
