Garrett Horne led a 20-point run in the second half and Twin Valley clinched the BDD regular season title with a 71-40 win over the Hurley Rebels Friday night at Hurley High School.
Horne poured in a game high 29 points, including eight of the Panthers’ first nine points of the second half.
Hunter Simpson added seven points in the third quarter when Twin Valley broke open a close game and shut out Hurley.
The Panthers outscored the Rebels 18-0 in the third period and scored again early in the fourth to make it a 20-0 run as Twin Valley (15-3, 7-0) extended a slim 31-28 halftime lead to a 51-28 advantage. Hurley got its first points of the second half at the 7:25 mark of the fourth quarter.
“Hurley came out ready to play in the first half,” Twin Valley coach Brian Moore said. “We underestimated them.
“In the second half we got a little gut check and the kids responded.
Garrett kind of stepped up and set the tone for the second half for us, and everybody fed off him.”
It started out as a physical battle of big men, between Twin Valley’s Matthew Baldwin and Hurley’s Eric May, the two leading scorers in the BDD.
Baldwin scored 10 of his 13 points in the first period when the Panthers took a 17-9 lead. Shane Shelton hit two three-pointers and May scored all of his seven points in the second quarter to get Hurley within three points by halftime.
Horne scored six points in the second quarter and tossed in eight of the Panthers’ first 10 points in the fourth period as Twin Valley continued to pull away before going to its bench for the final 3:15.
Simpson finished with 14 points and freshman Josh Smith added nine points for Twin Valley. Shelton finished with 14 points to pace Hurley.

Wave Matmen Win Two of Three Duals in Tri-Match
Despite Winning Eight of Ten Weights, Wave Falls to Abingdon

by Lloyd Combs
Sports Reporter
A short-handed Grundy wrestling squad dominated on the mats, even though the Golden Wave lost one of three duals Saturday in Hillsville.
Grundy whipped Carroll County, 57-24, in Southwest District action and split its other two meets. The Wave walloped Turner Ashby, 42-24, while Abingdon picked up its first ever dual meet win over Grundy by a 36-33 count.
Grundy, which had just 10 healthy wrestlers on hand, lost only four head-to-head matches. All ten wrestlers won against Carroll County, counting forfeits by the Cavaliers.
Coty Riggleman was of just two winners for Turner Ashby and Wave sophomore Jon Dotson nearly upset the 2006 state finalist at 125 pounds. In the upset loss to Abingdon, Grundy lost four matches by forfeit, and won eight of the ten matches it wrestled. Three Wave wrestlers were sidelined by various injuries.
“Under the circumstances we did a pretty good job,” Grundy coach Travis Fiser said. “Abingdon was just trying to avoid tech falls and majors. While we’re shorthanded we’re just a better tournament team than we are a dual team right now.”
Every Wave wrestler picked up one or more wins Saturday, including Ethan Owens (119), Garland Cleek (130), Jarrett Landis (135), Josh McCowan (152), Morgan Owens (171), Josh Lee (189) and Josh Ratliff (215).
Saturday’s individual highlights for Grundy, said Fiser, came at 125 pounds (Dotson), heavyweight (Andy Stiltner) and at 103 and 112 pounds, where Billy Owens was impressive at both weights. Stiltner won an overtime decision over Carroll County heavyweight Drew McGraw.
“Andy Stiltner wrestled well,” Fiser said. “McGraw is a pretty good heavyweight. Andy did a good job controlling the match. Billy Owens, we put him at 103 and 112 and he did a solid job.
“Jon Dotson did a good job against Coty Riggleman of Turner Ashby. (Riggleman) majored us the last time we wrestled him. We lost an 8-5 decision this time and we had opportunities to win. Jon has really improved. This shows the promise he’s made since Christmas.”
Dotson and Stiltner won decisions in the Abingdon
match, while Owens won by fall at 103 pounds. Owens and Stiltner each pinned their Turner Ashby opponents.
Individual details were not available from the Carroll County dual.
