his back and gets a win by fall in 3:05 in the heavyweight
finals of the Southwest District wrestling tournament last
Wednesday evening at Riverview Elementary/Middle School.

Winning a district title never gets
old, even after 23 straight Southwest District championships, or
four consecutive individual title.
Winning your first district
championship isn’t bad, either, and several wrestlers involved in
their first district meet won some of the most exciting matches of
the day for Grundy.
The Golden Wave had 11
champions, including seven first-time winners, and placed all 13
wrestlers in winning its 24th consecutive SWD title Wednesday
night at Riverview Elementary-Middle School.
Kris Stiltner (125 pounds) won
his fourth SWD crown to lead the Golden Wave.
Aaron Stiltner (135) claimed
his third district title, while Brandon Hankins (130) and Josh
McCowan (145) each won their second straight SWD crowns.
First-time winners
included Derek Anderson (103), Jarrett Landis (140), Jerami
Bartley (152), Demarco Owens (171), Josh Lee (189), Matt Stiltner
(215) and heavyweight Andy Stiltner.
“Everybody did a
good job,” Grundy coach Travis Fiser said. “We had a lot of guys
who won their first district titles. Jarrett Landis is one who
really did a good job.
“He moved up to 140 and he was
giving up some weight. It was a real big win for him.”
Landis won an 11-4
decision over Graham’s Rick Barreras in the finals at 140 pounds.
Kris Stiltner picked up his
fourth SWD title by pinning Will Shelton of Richlands right off
the bat, winning by fall in a mere 14 seconds. Anderson also won
by fall in under a minute, pinning Carroll County’s Kerstan Quesen-berry
in 44 seconds.
Brandon Hankins,
who moved up to 130 pounds, pinned Tazewell’s Shane Wilson in 4:41
in the finals. In the finals at 145 pounds, Josh McCowan pinned
Graham’s James Ball just before the second period buzzer (3:59).
Jerami Bartley
pinned Graham’s Charlie Holbrook in 3:15 to win at 152 pounds,
while Demarco Owens pinned Eric McDaniel of Tazewell in 5:14 to
win at 171 pounds.
Josh Lee won
a 7-2 decision over Lucas Hubbard of Richlands in the 189-pound
finals, while Matt Stiltner won the 215-pound crown by fall in
5:38 over Graham’s Tyler Barreras.

Top-Ranked
Panthers
Rout
Haysi in
Winning
BDD Boys'
Tournament
Crown,
66-34 |

Any worries that Twin Valley might look ahead to regional play
were cast aside early in Saturday’s Black Diamond District finals.
The top-ranked Panthers added a
tournament title to its regular season crown with a 66-34 win over
Haysi Saturday at Twin Valley High School.
Twin Valley, which has a bye
into Friday’s Region IV semifinals, went on early runs of 11-2 and
13-0 to build a 32-10 half lead Matthew Baldwin scored 21 points
and Logan Shortridge added 15 as the Panthers defeated Haysi for
the third time this season and the second time in a week.
“I was worried about how we
might respond,” Twin Valley Coach Brian Moore said. “But the boys
came out and seemed to be pretty loose and handled the situation
well.”
The Panthers took command
by physically dominating the smaller Tigers. The 6-foot-7 Baldwin
had 11 rebounds and five blocks, while powerful 6-3 forward
Jeremiah Lester added 10 boards, 10 points and six assists as the
Panthers out-rebounded the Tigers 39-20.
“When Baldwin and Lester
are both in the game, (Twin Valley) is just so much better than us
physically,” Haysi Coach Dave Sutherland said. “There’s no need to
sugarcoat it. But you can’t fault my boys. They played hard and
we’re playing next week.
“Had we not
(advanced), this season would have been really disappointing
because of the way we’ve played lately, but we did what we had to
do to get to the
regionals.”
Ryan Jones scored
11 points and Kevin Viers added nine for Haysi (10-14). The Tigers
shot 30.8 percent (14-of-46) from the floor overall, including a
4-of-23 effort from three-point range.
Shortridge reached
the 1,000-point mark for his career as the Panthers won for the
20th consecutive time, building a 43-16 halftime advantage and a
62-24 lead by the end of the third quarter. Shortridge lacked just
two points going into Saturday night’s BDD finals.
