Edna
Ruth Asbury, 76, of Rt. 5, Grundy, died Wednesday, February
15, 2006 at Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy following an
extended illness.
Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late
George W. and Stella Perkins Owens. She was a member of Little
Prater Church of Christ and a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her
husband, Bueford Thornton Asbury in 1989; and one brother,
Elmer Owens.
She is survived by one daughter, Paula, and husband, Ralph
Rowe Jr. of Grundy; three sons, C.R. and wife, Nita Asbury of
Richlands, Mike and wife, Joann Asbury, of Tazewell and Bill
Asbury of Kingsport, TN; three sisters, Beulah Lockhart of
Council, Lura Sutherland of Davenport and Geneva Owens of
Honaker; nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Services were held Saturday, February 18 at Grundy Funeral
Home Chapel with Evangelist Michael Trent and the Rev. Carl
Tegler officiating. Burial followed in Clinch Valley Memorial
Cemetery in Richlands.
Active pallbearers were men of the Little Prater Church of
Christ.

Charles Curtis Stiltner

Charles
Curtis Stiltner, 66, of Rt. 1, Grundy, died Tuesday, February
14, 2006 at Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy following an
extended illness.
Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late William
Kendrick and Minnie Foster Stiltner. He was a lifelong
resident of Buchanan County, was of the Baptist faith and was
a disabled coal miner.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one
step-daughter, Kimberly Blankenship.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Nickels Stiltner; six
daughters, Selena Peck of Grundy, Tina Herndon, Karen Orfield
and Laura Robinette, all of Abingdon, Tracy George of Fresno,
CA and Sabrina Raab of Sevierville, TN; two sons, Rodney
Daugherty of the U.S. Army and Charles Curtis Stiltner, Jr. of
Sevierville; one step-daughter, Debra Vanover of Richlands;
two step-sons, Bobby Lee Justus of Grundy and Michael Hurley
of Richlands; two brothers, Bill Stiltner of Myrtle Beach, SC
and Bobby Stiltner of Byron, OH; one sister, Shirley Viers of
Bristol, VA; one step-sister, Lisa Stiltner of Hurley; three
step-brothers, Tony Stiltner, Robbie Stiltner and Bryan
Stiltner, all of Grundy; step-mother, Jean Varney of Grundy;
step-father, Roland Rife of Abingdon; 16 grandchildren, two
step-grandsons and two step-granddaughters.

Christine Smith Stacy

Christine
Smith Stacy, 73, of Grundy, died Friday, February 17, 2006 at
Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy.
Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late
Ashville Harvey Smith and Lou Emma Maynor Smith. She was a
lifelong resident of Buchanan County, attended Dry Fork
Primitive Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her
husband, Clayton Stacy; six sisters and eight brothers.
She is survived by one daughter, Sue Belcher and husband,
Rob, of Grundy; four sons, Ron Stacy and wife, Peggy, of
Grundy, Elder Don Stacy and wife, Algrine, of Abingdon, Mark
"Burger" Stacy and wife, Lisa and David "PeeWee" Stacy and
wife, Jeanne, all of Marion; one sister, Thelma Doughten of
Grundy; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services were held Monday, February 20 at Shortridge-Ramey
Funeral Home Chapel in Grundy with Elders Brian Moore, Elmer
Brown, Shawn Dotson and Estle Hackney officiating. Burial
followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
Active pallbearers were grandchildren.
Honorary pallbearers were Jonathan Rouse, Dr. Clint
Sutherland and members of the Dry Fork Primitive Baptist
Church.

Eugene M. Cecil
(Grundy)
Eugene
M. Cecil, 82, of Grundy, died Monday, February 20, 2006 in
Wellmont Hospice House, Bristol, TN, following an extended
illness.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one
infant brother, Homer, and three sisters, Mabel Durbin, Nell
Durbin and Mary Ann Pryce.
Born in Heidelburg, KY, he was the son of the late Andrew
Jackson and Dorothy Venable Cecil.
He graduated from Lee County High School and attended
Kentucky Wesleyan College before joining the United States Air
Force during World War II. After completion of service to his
country, he entered the University of Kentucky and in 1949,
graduated with a bachelor of science degree in marketing.
He came to Buchanan County in 1950, formerly working for
Ammar Brothers Department Store, was the owner of Gene’s
Department Store and worked as an insurance broker.
He was an active and former member of the Downtown Business
Association, a former Kiwanian, a member of Sandy Valley #17
AF & AM, a member of the Kazim Temple in Roanoke and was a
former Boy Scout leader and member of the Breaks District
Committee.
He was a member of the John Ratliff Post #164 of the
American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, was former
president of the Dismal River Country Club and a member of
Willowbrook Country Club’s Board of Directors. He was a former
member of the Grundy High School Athletic Boosters Club and
for years served on the Buchanan County YMCA. Board of
Directors.
He was a member of the Buchanan County Chamber of Commerce,
had served the Town of Grundy as a member of the Town Council
and as mayor and vice-mayor. He had served as a representative
on the Department of Transportation and Industrial Development
Authority’s Town of Grundy Flood Task Force.
For the past 55 years, he was an active member of Buchanan
First Presbyterian Church where he had served as an elder,
deacon and member of the session. He was a UK Fellow, was
commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel and was a 1995 recipient of
the Buchanan County Hall of Fame award.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Adele Ammer Cecil;
one daughter, Diana and husband, Louis Holland, of Grundy; one
son, David and wife, Debbie Cecil, of Grundy; twin sister,
Elizabeth C. Fore of Irvin, KY; five grandchildren, David
Eugene Cecil II, Gary Dean Holland, Rebecca Evelyn Cecil,
Sandra Diana Holland and Reagan Jeanette Cecil, all of Grundy;
several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held today (Thursday), February 23 at 1
p.m. at Buchanan First Presbyterian Church in Grundy with Evgs.
Michael Trent and Mike Rife and the Revs. Frank Preston and
George Aichel officiating. Entombment will follow in Mountain
Valley Memorial Park Mausoleum, Big Rock. Masonic services
will be held at the church by members of Sandy Valley Lodge
#17 AF & AM.
Active pallbearers will be James Bunn, Ed Bunn, Dr. Clint
Sutherland, Grant Shrader, Shea Shrader, Tom Scott, Mark
Mutter, James Street and the Hon. Patrick Johnson.
Honorary pallbearers will be Carl Anderson, the Hon. Nick
Persin, Omer Bunn, Henry Farmer Jr., Gerald Coleman, Lodge
Compton, Ronald Cole, Jack Buchanan, H.A. Street, T.C.

Claude
Grizzle, 75, of Conaway, died Tuesday, February 21, 2006 at
Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy, following an extended
illness.
Born in Russell County, he was a son of the late Tyler and
Lydia D. Grizzle. He had been a resident of Buchanan County
several years and a member of the Church of Christ. He was a
retired coal miner and a member of the United Mine Workers of
America.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by
several sisters and brothers.
He is survived by his wife, Lavonne Gilliam Grizzle of
Wytheville; three sons, Danny Ray Grizzle and Randy Michael
Grizzle, both of Haysi and David Warren and wife, Brenda
Grizzle of Marion; one brother, Jimmy Grizzle.
Services were held Wednesday, February 22 at Grundy Funeral
Home Chapel with Evg. Sam Casebolt officiating. Burial
followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
Active pallbearers were family and members of Big Rock
Church of Christ.

McLean Hicks, 71, of the Swords Creek area died Tuesday,
February 14, 2006.
Born in Cambridge, MA, she was the daughter of the late
Joseph and Elsie Bowser McLean. She was a member of Ivy Spring
Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her
husband, Junior Hicks.
She is survived by sister-in-law, Judy Reynolds of
Cleveland; caregivers, Burb and Thelma Vance of Swords Creek;
and many friends.
Services were held Saturday, February 18 at Ivy Spring
Baptist Church with Pastor Phillip Cook officiating. Burial
followed in the Dry Fork Cemetery near Vansant.
Active pallbearers were friends.
Honorary pallbearer was Dr. Ramesh Kabaria.

Ethel
Mullins, 74, of Haysi, died Saturday, February 18, 2006 at
Dickenson Community Hospital in Clintwood.
Born in West Virginia, she was a daughter of the late
William and Betty Sartin Lackey. She was a homemaker and was
of the Old Regular Baptist faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a
daughter, Jeanie, and two sisters, Florence May and May
White.
She is survived by her husband, James Mullins; seven
daughters, Teresa Gilbert and Orpha Hess, both of Haysi,
Patricia Arrington of Kings-port, TN, Stella Charles of
Blountville, TN, Deloras Moore and Betty Hay, both of
Clintwood and Sharon Stanley of Clinchco; eight sons, Ricky
Mullins of Grundy, Roy Charles, Nevada Mullins, Charles
William Mullins and Mark Anthony Mullins, all of Haysi,
Clyde Meade of West Virginia, Bill Meade of Indiana, and
Stevie Mullins of Bristol; four brothers, Lonnie Lakey,
Clyde Lakey, Bill Lakey and Raymond Lakey, all of West
Virginia; one sister, Fay White of West Virginia; several
grandchildren, great-grandchildren and
great-great-grandchildren.
Services were held Tuesday, February 21 at Haysi Funeral
Home with Elder David O’quinn officiating. Burial followed
in the Mullins-Branham Cemetery at Rt. 1, Haysi.

Beldon Mullins, Sr., 81, of Haysi, died Sunday, February 19,
2006 at Mountain View Health Care Center, Elkhorn City, KY.
Born in Pike County, KY, he was the son of the late Andy
Mullins and Clarecie Stiltner Mullins. He was a lifelong
resident of Dickenson County, was a retired coal miner and a
member of Cedar Grove Old Regular Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by
one son, Ronnie Keith Mullins; five sisters, four brothers
and one grandchild.
He is survived by four daughters, Venita Stepp and Kathy
Deel, both of Vansant, Barrie Ledbetter of Lang-horne, PA
and Teresa Deel of Clintwood; three sons, Larry Wayne
Mullins of Honaker, Charlie Mullins, Jr. of Oakwood and Gary
Layne Mullins of Cedar Bluff; 17 grandchildren, nine
great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Services were held Tuesday, February 21 at Shortridge-Ramey
Funeral Home Chapel in Grundy with Elders Jerry Overstreet,
Willis Bartley, Charles Wright and Ralph Mullins
officiating. Burial followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens,
Claypool Hill.

Harold
Stacy, 74, of Pounding Mill, formerly of Pilgrim’s Knob,
died Saturday, February 18, 2006 in a Bristol, TN hospital
following a brief illness.
Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late
William Edward and Maggie Keen Stacy. He was a United States
Army veteran, a retired coal miner and a member of the UMWA.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by
two brothers, Matt Stacy, Sr. and Bob Stacy.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Hazel Byrd Stacy;
one daughter, Rita Fay Ramey and husband, Randall, of
Pounding Mill; one son, Glenn Stacy of Huntsville, AL; one
brother, Nelson Stacy of Ypsilanti, MI; two sisters, Ada
Dunford of Claypool Hill and Evelyn Rife and husband, Elmer,
of Pilgrims Knob; one brother-in-law, Edward Byrd, of
Pounding Mill; one granddaughter, two step-granddaughters,
several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Wednesday, February 22 at Buchanan
Funeral Service Chapel at Keen Mountain with the Revs. Ancil
Childress and Jack Ward officiating. Burial followed in
Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill. Military graveside
rites were conducted by John Ratliff Post 164.
Pallbearers were Otis Meadows, Tommy Tillie, Bruce Rife,
Chester Rife, Richard Rife and Eddie Dunford.

Ann "Shan" Payne Cooper, 64, of Doran, died Thursday,
February 16, 2006 at Clinch Valley Medical Center, Richlands.
Born in McDowell County, WV, she was the daughter of the
late Isiah Payne and Mary Hatfield Payne. She was of the
Holiness faith and was a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by
one sister, Connie Faye McKinney; and one brother, James
Willard Payne.
She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Thurman Gerald
Cooper, Sr. of Doran; three daughters, Thelma Geraldine
Mullins of Whitewood, Rita Gail Cooper of Princeton, WV and
Teresa Lynn Rogers of Richlands; three sons, Bruce Michael
Cooper and wife, Teena and Thurman Gerald Cooper and wife,
Debbie, all of Doran and Terry Allen Cooper of Victory; one
sister, Anita Vance and husband, Larry, of Bradshaw, WV;
four brothers, Herbert Payne and Alberta of Jolo, WV, Donald
Payne and Judy McQuire of Cedar Bluff, Leon Payne of
Gatesville, TX and Roland Payne and wife, Barbara Ann, of
Milton, WV; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services were held Sunday, February 19 at Loggy Bottom
Pentecostal Church at Whitewood with the Revs. Billy Ward,
Charlie Kennedy and Jimmy Allen officiating. Burial followed
in the Simeon L. Payne Cemetery at Keen Ridge, Paynesville.

Fayne Mullins, 71, of Haysi, died Wednesday, February 15,
2006 in Pound following an automobile accident.
Born in Dickenson County, he was a son of the late Guy and
Philippa Wallace Mullins. He served in the Army, was a
member of Splashdam Freewill Baptist Church and was a
retired coal miner.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by
his brothers, Roger and Jim Mullins and one sister, Clara
Jean Edwards.
He is survived by his wife, Lear; one daughter, Melisha
Stanley, of Haysi; one brother, Jerry (Claudette) Mullins,
of Richmond; two sisters, Lorraine (Paul) Bentley and
Barbara Deel, both of Haysi; one sister-in-law, Jeanette
Mullins of Haysi; two grandchildren, eight nieces and
nephews.
Services were held Saturday, February 18 at Haysi Funeral
Home with the Rev. Danny Sluss officiating. Burial followed
in Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood. VFW Post 8979
conducted military graveside rites.
Pallbearers were Travis Gilbert and brothers of the
church.
Honorary pallbearers were deacons of the church.

Dickenson County, died Sunday, February 19, 2006 at
Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born in Swords Creek, she was a daughter of the late
Elbert and Alifair Hess. She was a member of Splashdam
Freewill Baptist Church and a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by
her husband, Garland Bruce Sutherland.
She is survived by five daughters, Pat (Dan) Taylor and
Katheryn "Kitty" (Jamie) Rutledge, all of Richmond, Linda
(Danny) Powers of Florida, Wanda (Richie) Yates of Lynchburg
and Vivian (Bill) Rockwell of Chester; two sons, Frederick
Ronald Sr. (Margaret Ann) Sutherland of Lynchburg and
Roderick Donald (Carrie Sue) Sutherland of Powhatan; one
brother, James (Jim) Hess of Haysi; 17 grandchildren and 22
great-grandchildren.
Services will be held today (Thursday), February 23 at
Splashdam Freewill Baptist Church with Danny Sluss
officiating. Burial will follow in the Dewey Sutherland
Cemetery.

Sidney "Sid" Estep, 74, of Phoenix, AZ, formerly of Hurley,
died Tuesday, February 14, 2006 at his home.
Born in Hurley, he was the son of the late Drewy and Sara
Ashby Estep. He was a veteran of the United States Air
Force, serving 21 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by
one brother, Harold Estep; and one sister, Amy Estep Harmon.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ruth Herrman
Estep; one son, Richard "Ricky" Estep, and wife, Venus, of
Phoenix; two daughters, Sue Wittman and husband, Bob, of
Roanoke and Rhonda Besco and husband, Bob, of Omaha, NE;
four sisters, Pearl Tester of Hurley, Jean Pruitt and
husband, Zeke, of Abingdon, Cathy "Bidgie" Charles and
husband, Harold, of Claypool Hill, and Bonita Lou Nichols
and husband, Robert, of Abingdon; one brother, Clifford Ray
Estep, and wife, Vickie, of Wolford; three granddaughters,
two grandsons, two great-grandsons, one aunt, one uncle,
several nieces and cousins.
Services were held Saturday, February 18 at Apollo Baptist
Church, Glendale, AZ. Burial followed in Sunland Memorial
Park, Glendale, who was also in charge of arrangements.
