Wave Wrestlers Place Sixth in
Ultimate Challenge Tourney |
|
|
|
It was a showcase for the top AAA
teams in Virginia and several nationally-ranked wrestlers, and a
young Grundy squad more than held its won.
Grundy placed sixth in the Ultimate
Challenge tournament at Colonial Forge High School in Stafford
Saturday.
Four Grundy wrestlers reached the
consolation finals, and 103-pound freshman Derek Anderson and
215-pound senior Matt Stiltner each won to place third.
Kris Stiltner (130) and
Aaron Stiltner (140) each placed fourth.
“Derek Anderson did a great job
getting third,” Grundy Coach Travis Fiser said. “He beat the
number one ranked AAA kid (in the state) in Mike Holcomb from
Kellam. Matt Stiltner getting third at 215, he had a very
impressive day.”
Josh McGowan (145), Jerami
Bartley (152), Demarco Owens (171), Josh Lee (189) and heavyweight
Andy Stiltner each won their last match to place fifth in their
respective weight classes.
Brandon Hankins was sixth
at 125 pounds, while Morgan Owens was sixth in one of many tough
weight classes, 160 pounds.
“Kris and Aaron were solid,”
Fiser added. “Josh Lee had a tough, competitive weight class. He
wrestled tough and also Jerami Bartley, he was solid, too.
“Josh Lee was up against
a Great Bridge kid and he really dominated that match. From
beginning to end he wrestled pretty solid. We were pretty solid at
several weights.”
Among the nationally ranked
wrestlers on hand were Jordan Friskhorn (130) of Great Bridge and
Mack Lewnes of Mt. St. Joseph’s. A number of the tournament
champs, at 112, 119, 125, 135, 140, 145 and 215, were the
top-ranked AAA wrestlers in the state.
“Overall, that was the toughest
thing we’ve been to this year, for a one day event. Some of the
best kids in the country were there. Mack Luwnes of Mt. St. Joe’s
is ranked number one in the country at 160 and Bubba Jenkins of
Cox is number one at 145.
“A lot of those kids are
nationally ranked, along with the top four AAA teams (in the
state). There were a lot of good wrestlers, a lot of good kids. It
was a
hard day for some of us, but we really got a lot out of it.”

Top-Ranked
Panthers
Remain
Unbeaten
in BDD
with Pair
of Wins |
|
by Lloyd Combs
Sports Reporter
Twin Valley rarely talks about its number one ranking off the
court, but it looks like a team trying to make a statement on it.
The Panthers clobbered a good Grundy squad,
81-39, in non-district play Thursday at TVHS, and stayed unbeaten
in its district, despite outstanding efforts from two BDD rivals
last week.
Matthew Baldwin had a triple-double,
Jeremiah Lester added a double-double and Kent Goodman tossed in
seven three-pointers to help Twin Valley pull away from Council,
62-42, in Black Diamond District action Friday night at Council
Elementary School.
In BDD action Tuesday (Jan. 24)
at Sandlick, K.T. Vandyke scored nine of his club’s final 13
points as the Panthers edged Haysi, 68-62.
Friday’s win was the 16th
straight for Twin Valley (17-2, 5-0), which held onto its top spot
in the latest Associated Press Group A poll. The outside shooting
of Kent Goodman was a key factor Friday, when the senior guard
scored 17 of his 23 points in the second half.
Council stayed within
striking distance, despite missing its first 17 shots from the
field, and despite 15 points, 11 boards, 10 blocks from the
6-foot-7 Baldwin and 13 points and boards from the 6-3 Lester.
D.J. Barton,
meanwhile, had a double-double for Council. The 6-4 senior matched
his former teammate’s game-high numbers with 23 points and also
pulled down 11 rebounds. His back-to-back buckets got the Cobras
within six points in the second quarter and 30-20 early in the
third period.
Goodman, who played
for three years at Council before transferring to Twin Valley this
season, answered each time with a series of three-pointers,
including four in the third period that pushed the Panther lead to
48-30.
“It felt different
(playing for the visiting team) here,” Goodman said. “After I
finally hit a couple of shots, though, I felt comfortable.”
Goodman was 7-of-11
from three-point range and didn’t even attempt a shot from inside
the arc.
Baldwin, meanwhile,
was 6-of-9 from the floor and got eight of his 10 blocks in the
first half. Lester garnered seven of his 13 rebounds on the
offensive end.
