Jerry Lawrence Young
(Grundy)

  Jerry Lawrence Young, 48, of Grundy, died Monday, January 9, 2006 at Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy.
  Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Edward and Elsie Justus Young. He was a former coal miner.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Bobby Young.
  He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Terry (Tasha) Meadows of Paw Paw; two sisters, Mrs. Benny (Patricia Ann) Lester of Hurley and Brenda Muljus of White Oak, PA; and one granddaughter.
  Services were held Friday, January 13 at the Church of God in Jesus Name, Guesses Fork, Hurley, with the Rev. Donnie Prater officiating. Burial followed in the Young Cemetery on Mill Creek at Hurley.
  Pallbearers were family and friends.
  Virginia Funeral Home, Grundy, was in charge of arrangements.
 


Ollie Cook May
(Hurley)

  Ollie Cook May, 86, of Hurley, died Thursday, January 12, 2006 at Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Cook and Omea Tester Cook. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a member of Union Light Freewill Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Earl Cook and Lonnie Cook; and four sisters, Alta Dotson, Lucy Dotson, Lula Bentley and Gladys Justus.
  She is survived by her husband, John H. May; one daughter, Lilly Mae Hurd and husband, Herbert, of Heber Springs, AK; one step-son, Ulbert Dotson and wife, Norma, of Rosedale; one sister, Ida Bevins of Coeburn; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
  Services were held Sunday, January 15 at Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel in Grundy with Elders William Prater, L.C. Hunt and Evg. Michael Trent officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Active pallbearers were Bruce Dotson, Barry Estep, Jr., Christopher Childress, Gary Hurley, Cecil Dotson, Troy May, Leroy May and Warren Hurd.
  Honorary pallbearers were Larry Hurley, Dee Hurley, Jimmy May, Paul Estep and Herbert Hurd.
  Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
 


Bessie Jane Boyd Deel
(Royal City)

  Bessie Jane Boyd Deel, 99, of the Royal City section of Grundy, died Sunday, January 15, 2006 following an extended illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late James Harve and Polly Jane O'Qquinn Boyd. She was a life-long resident of Buchanan County, a member of Grundy Church of Christ and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was a homemaker.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willougby P. Deel; one daughter, Callie Deel; and two brothers.
  She is survived by one daughter, Irene Deel of Grundy; four sons, Thomas Deel, Jackie and wife, Judy Deel and Billy Ray and wife, Lois Ann Deel, all of Grundy and Percy and wife, Evelyn Deel of Vansant; four granddaughters, two grandsons, two great-granddaughters and seven great-grandsons.
  Services were held Tuesday, January 17 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evgs. Michael Trent, Mike Rife and Joe O’Neal officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Active pallbearers were Terry Ellis Matney, Ralph Deel, Roger Yates, Troy Viers, Barney Stiltner, Claude Ratliff, Truman White, Jamie Deel, Michael Cox and Jeff Lester.
  Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Clint Sutherland, the Hon. Keary R. Williams, Sgt. Frank McMurray, elders and deacons of Grundy Church of Christ, caregivers - Linda Lester and Della Carter, special nurse - Denise Honaker of Buchanan General Home Health, and special friend, Lila Fleenor.

Linda Virginia S. Bailey
(Hurley)

  Linda Virginia S. Bailey, 69, of Hurley, died Sunday, January 15, 2006 at Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy following an extended illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late James and Gladys Blankenship Gibson. She was a homemaker.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, William Smith; her second husband, Walter Bailey; one son, William Wallace Smith; one brother, Ike Gibson; and one sister, Shirley Gibson.
  She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Paul (Judy Lynn Smith) Dotson and Wanda Jeanette Smith, all of Hurley; two sons, Joe David Smith and wife, Nora Jane of Slate Creek and Walter Benjamin (Ben) Bailey and wife, Beth, of Oakwood; two brothers, James Gibson and wife, Jean, of Greenup, KY and Luther Gibson and wife, Pat, of Covington; seven sisters, Kathleen Bailey, Tennessee Smith and Mrs. Joe (Shelia) Hensley, all of Hurley, Mrs. Harold (Evelyn) Looney of Vansant, Wanda Garrett of Virginia Beach, Bonnie Blankenship and Mrs. Denny (Brenda) Deel, all of Haysi; and nine grandchildren.
  Services will be held today (Thursday), January 19 at Knox Creek Church of God at Hurley with the Revs. Henry Rowe, Doug Blankenship and Elder Harold Thornsbury officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Pallbearers will be Josh Dwayne Viers, David Stiltner, Michael and Steve Smith, Richard Chafins, Hassell Bailey, Leonard Bailey and Larry Bailey.
  Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Clint Sutherland, Dr. Pillai, Herbert May, Josh Viers, Sr., Danny Sargent and Glenn Adkins.

Mary Marie Johnson
(Big Rock)

  Mary Marie Dye Johnson, 87, of Big Rock, died Monday, January 16, 2006 following an extended illness.
  Born in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late Sarah Dye Nelson. She was a resident of Buchanan County for many years and was a member of New Zion Freewill Baptist Church. She was a homemaker.
  In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her husband, Toy Johnson, February 4, 1988; one daughter, Brenda Epling, September 3, 2005; one grandchild; two brothers; and one sister.
  She is survived by four daughters, Nila and husband, Danny Fraley and Haletta and husband, Danny Keaton, all of Big Rock, Janet and husband, Ken Hankins, of Bristol, TN and Dolly Mullins of Burlington, NC; seven sons, Burley and wife, Joan Johnson of Conaway, Ersel Johnson, Lester and wife, Clovis Johnson, Gary Johnson, Harry and wife, Tammy Johnson, and Eddie and wife, Julie Johnson, all of Big Rock and Harold and wife, Adalene Johnson, of Abingdon; 28 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
  Services will be held today (Thursday), January 19, at 1 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Jimmy Kerr and Danny Fraley, Jr. officiating. Bural will follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Active pallbearers will be grandsons.

  William P. Corbett, of Rocky Point, NC, formerly of Pounding Mill, died Monday, January 9, 2006 at his home.
  He was owner and operator of Triangle Research Corp. in Grundy, from 1969-1988.  He is survived by his wife, Betty Stiltner Corbett; three children, Christine C. Elswick (Danny) of Harman, Andrew P. Corbett of Chapel Hill, NC and Jesse S. Corbett (Sandi) of Leland, NC; step-children, Roger Altizer of Johnson City, TN and Pamela Altizer of the home; one sister, Joanna C. Clark of Boynton Beach, FL.
 


Ura Alice Fields
(Richlands, VA)

  Ura Alice Fields, 78, of Jewell Ridge Road, Richlands, formerly of the Poplar Creek section of Buchanan County, died Thursday, January 12, 2006 at the home of her daughter, Shirley Moore, in Richlands, following an extended illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Stewart Chambers and Lizzie McClanahan. She was a life-long resident of Buchanan County and a member of Bethlehem Old Regular Baptist Church No. 2. She was a former employee of the Rainbow Drive-In Restaurant as a baker.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Fields, July 5, 1999; one half-sister, Edith Daugherty; one half-brother, Elzie Stiltner; and one brother, Stanton Stiltner.
  She is survived by one daughter, Shirley and husband, Jerry Moore, of Richlands; two sons, Ted Lane and Jim Lane, both of Grundy; three sisters, Ava McClanahan and Irmal Lane, both of Grundy and Lorraine and husband, Bob Tate, of Rosedale; one sister-in-law, Dalphine Stiltner; two brothers, Clinton and wife, Floraine Stiltner and Bobby and wife, Georgia Stiltner, all of Grundy; 11 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Sunday, January 15 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Elders Roscoe Crouse, Jackie Yates, Howard Daniels, Toy Looney and William McClanahan officiating. Burial followed in the Stiltner Cemetery near Bethlehem Old Regular Baptist Church on Poplar Creek.
  Active pallbearers were family and friends.
  Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Ravi Titha, Dr. Wallace, Dr. D. Patel and Hospice and Palliative Care of Virginia.

Betty Jo Barton
(Bee, VA)

  Betty Jo Barton, 67, of Bee, died Wednesday, January 11, 2006 at Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, TN.
  Born in Dickenson County, she was a daughter of Hallie Anderson Taylor and the late Clay Taylor. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
  In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, Greg.
  In addition to her mother, she is survived by a son, Mick (Becky) Barton; one daughter, Wrenda Barton; eight sisters, Lucille (Clayton) Belcher, Merle Powers, Alice (Norman) Mullins and Brenda (Robert) Lowery, all of Haysi, Lola Addington of Elkhorn City, KY, Joy (William) Underwood of Humble, TX, Shirley (Gordon) Davis of Amelia and Julie Bibb of Waynesboro; one brother, Arnie (Carol) Taylor of Ashland; and grandsons.
  Services were held Saturday, January 14 at Haysi Funeral Home with Elder Price Viers and Pastor Carl Burmeier officiating.
  Pallbearers were nephews.
  Honorary pallbearers were Gregory and Joseph Barton.

Gladys Fern Clark
(Lebanon, VA)

  Gladys Fern Barton Clark, 69, of Lebanon, died Sunday, January 15, 2006 in a Lebanon hospital.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Asa and Alola Ball Barton. She was a veteran of the United States Air Force, having served in the Korean War and was a member of Belfast Holiness Church.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Clark; one daughter, Tina Marie Tuggle; one son, Michael Clark; and one brother, Bruce Barton.
  She is survived by two sons, William Raymond Laurie of Lebanon and Robert Joseph Clark of Buena Vista; one sister, Phyllis Sullivan of Akron, OH; six grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
  Services will be held today (Thursday), January 19 at 2 p.m. in Honaker with the Revs. Roy Lee Wilson and Danny Altizer officiating. Interment will follow in Ketron Memorial Gardens, Lebanon. Military graveside honors will be conducted by VFW Post 9864 of Lebanon.
  Pallbearers will be Ray Barton, Peanut Barton, Sidney Crabtree, Roger Howard, Rick Turner and Gary Barton.

 


Ida Mae Coleman
(Haysi, VA)

  Ida Mae Coleman, 66, of Rt. 2, Haysi, died Sunday, January 15, 2006 at her home.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Tivis and Samantha Deel of Haysi.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ezra Sherman Coleman; two daughters, Patty Coleman and Terry Coleman Oquinn; two sisters, Gladys and Martha; two brothers, Milford and Everett Deel; one son-in-law, Robert Booker Beavers; and two grandsons.
  She is survived by a son, Hoppy (Margie) Coleman; two daughters, Peggy (Clinard) Coleman and Tammy Beavers; four brothers, Wayne, William, Estes and Kent Deel; four sisters, Fay Coleman, Betty Coleman, Barbara Yates and Thelma Ruley; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and two step-grandsons.
  Services were held Wednesday, January 18 at Little David Old Regular Baptist Church with Elders Freddie Ramey, Frank Newsome, Buster Mullins, Steve Lyall and Danny Yates officiating. Burial followed in the Tivis Deel Cemetery at Rt. 2, Haysi.
  Pallbearers were Jeffery Jr. and Brady Coleman, Marcus Oquinn, Chris Deel and Gary Stanley.
  Honorary pallbearers were Jeffery Oquinn, Keith Boyd, Adam Barton, Columbus Fleming, Chad Deel and Basil Yates.

Betsy Lester Lark
(Stafford, VA)

  Betsy Lester Lark, 42, of Stafford, formerly of Buchanan County, died Thursday, January 12, 2006 at the Medical College of Virginia Hospital in Richmond, following a brief illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of Earl J. and Earlene Goode Lester of Conaway. She was a graduate and member of Grundy High School’s class of 1982, a graduate of Clinch Valley College at Wise’s class of 1986, served as a teacher in the Stafford County Public Schools and was a former member of the Little Prater Church of Christ.
  She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Arthur and Bessie Stiltner and maternal grandparents, Earl Good and Bertha Thomas.
  In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Patrick F. Lark; two brothers, Earl J. Jr. and wife, Tammie Lester and Ernie Lester and Shirley, all of Conaway; one brother-in-law, Rusty, and wife, Vickie Lark of Tazewell; two nieces, two nephews, two aunts and four uncles.
  Services were held Sunday, January 15 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evg. Michael Trent and Ministers Jimmy Kerr and E.C. Honaker officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Active pallbearers were Paul Belcher, Robby Belcher, Mike Proffitt, Gairy Miller, Elsie Stiltner, Donnie Compton, Steve Hagy and Tom McNutt.

John C. Hash Sr.
(Bluefield, VA)

  John Cameron "Jake" Hash, Sr., 60, of Bluefield, died Thursday, January 12, 2006 at a Bluefield, WV hospital following an extended illness.
  Born in Grundy, he was a son of Katherine Lambert Hash of Norton and the late Cameron Hash. He had made his home in Bluefield for the past 26 years. Prior to that, he had resided in the Pikeville, KY and Grundy areas. He was a graduate of Grundy Senior High School’s class of 1964 and attended East Tennessee State University. He was a former member of the Lions Club and Masonic Lodge in Kentucky, a member of Fincastle Presbyterian Church and attended Graham Christian Church.
  In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Linda Osborne Hash; one daughter, Anna Rainey and husband, Tom, of Fredericksburg; one son, John C. Hash, II and wife, Angela, of Roanoke; two sisters, Linda Ball of Clifton Forge and Dana Maynard of West Memphis, AR; two brothers, Russell Hash of St. Albans, WV and James Hash of Georgetown, KY; four grandchildren.
  Services were held Sunday, January 15 at Graham Christian Church in Bluefield with the Rev. Robert Johnson officiating. Interment followed in Maple Hill Cemetery, Blue-field.
  Pallbearers were nephews and cousins.

Audrey Lois Matney
(Richlands, VA)

  Audrey Lois White Matney, 86, of Richlands, died Friday, January 13, 2006 at a Richlands hospital following a brief illness.
  Born in Elk Garden, she was a daughter of the late James Andrew and Martha Melissa Mutter White, both Russell County natives. She was a member of Levisa Assembly Church at Marvin. She had resided in the Richlands areas for the past eight years but had spent most of her life in Buchanan County.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ritter Matney; and one sister, Edith Marie Furches.
  She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Wayne (Lois) Davis of Belfast and Mrs. Eddie (Freda) Bowman of Wardell; three sons, Nelson Matney and wife, Threcia of Dublin, Ronald Matney and wife, Carol, of Abingdon and Carless Matney and wife, Jerlene, of Marvin; one sister, Wanda Ann Furches of Elkton, MD; 14 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Monday, January 16 at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel, Richlands, with the Revs. Carl Robinson and James Hale officiating. Interment followed in the Hankins Cemetery in Richlands.
  Pallbearers were Eric Vandyke, Richard Shortridge, Leo Matney, John Matney, Terry Matney, Samuel Matney, Ron Matney and James Matney.
  Honorary pallbearer was Dr. Ramesh Kabaria.

Vernon A. Stiltner
(Napoleon, OH)

  Vernon A. Stiltner, 64 of Napoleon, OH, died Saturday at Henry County Hospital in Napoleon.
  Born in Grundy, he was the son of Ira and Eva (Ringley) Stiltner.
  He was a member of First Church of Christ in Napoleon and was a tow motor driver for Campbell Soup Company in Napoleon, retiring in 1992.
  He is survived by his wife, Sharon Gilland Stiltner; daughters, Susie (Donnie) Tressler, Sheliah Tipton, Leigann (Kevin) Brown, all of Defiance, OH, Carol (Eric) Happeny of Findlay, Tammy Taylor of Napoleon, Peggy (Del) Chupa of Defiance, Dodie (Eric) Kistner of Napoleon, Alissa (Mike) Muholland, Florida, OH; sons, Matt Stiltner of Defiance, Michael Stiltner of Pittsburgh, PA, Timothy Cereghin of Napoleon and Chip Cereghin, TX; one brother, Edward Stiltner of Oak Ridge, TN; two sisters, Evelyn (Mervin) Newberry of Lynchburg and Sudie Dotson of Marion, IN; 17 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Tuesday at Snyder Wesche Funeral Home and Crematories of Napoleon with burial following in Forest Hill Cemetery, Napoleon.
