TWIN VALLEY’S big man Matthew Baldwin (#42) uses his size inside against Haysi defender Josh Yates to score two of his team-high 25 points Friday night. Baldwin dominated inside against the Tigers on both ends of the court and was a big factor in holding Haysi to just 11 points in the second half.  (Staff photo/Sam Bartley.)

Panthers Complete 8-0 Sweep Through BDD; Stops Haysi Cold, 71-29

by Lloyd Combs
Sports Reporter

Twin Valley dropped out of the top spot in the state last week, but not in its own district.
The Panthers claimed a second straight Black Diamond District regular crown with a 60-51 win over Honaker Tuesday (Feb. 7) at A.P. Baldwin Gymnasium.
The Panthers completed an 8-0 sweep through the BDD by stopping Haysi cold, 71-29, Friday night at Twin Valley High School.
Twin Valley, winners of 19 straight, led most of the way at Honaker Tuesday, but it was anything but a comfortable lead. The Panthers took a 24-12 lead with a 12-0 run in the second-quarter, but struggled to pull away from the hard-nosed Tigers.
Honaker got within 25-19 midway through the second quarter, trailed 32-25 at the half and got within 55-49 after a three-pointer by Justin Honaker with 3:20 remaining in the game.
“Honaker looked like the team with something to play for,” Twin Valley Coach Brian Moore said. “They out-hustled us on both ends of the floor. That’s surprising, considering what we had at stake tonight.” Kent Goodman and K.T. Vandyke each scored 15 points, Logan Shortridge added 14 and Matthew Baldwin contributed 10 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks for Twin Valley (20-2, 8-0 BDD).
Justin Newberry and Justin Honaker scored 12 and Matthew Shortridge added 11 points for Honaker (11-11, 5-3). The Tigers were out-rebounded 35-22, but made it difficult for the Panthers to gain control, even inside.

Lady Wave Claims First SWD Regular Season Title Since 1998 With 61-35 Win at Richlands

by Lloyd Combs
Sports Reporter

In the first half Grundy struggled against the last-place team in the district.
In the second half, it played like a district champion.
Grundy claimed its first Southwest District crown since 1998 with a 61-35 win over Richlands Thursday night at Richlands Middle School.
The Lady Wave overcame a sloppy start, and the absence of leading scorer Brooke Shepherd, who sat out the contest with a foot injury, and outscored the Lady Blues 32-8 in the second half.
Richlands sophomore Jenny Keene scored 14 of her game-high 18 points in the second quarter to give the Lady Blues the lead before a 7-2 run gave the Lady Wave a modest 29-27 halftime advantage.
All five starters scored in the third quarter, when the Lady Wave went on a 13-3 run. Senior Elizabeth Lindsay led the way overall with 15 points as Grundy (17-3, 7-1 SWD) took a 42-30 lead and pulled away in the fourth quarter.
“The seniors got together at halftime and talked about what we needed to do,” Lindsay said. “We stepped up our defense and we had better shot selection in the second half, something we didn’t do in the first half.”
Samantha Rice added 14 points, freshman Kaitlyn Riley scored 12 and Allison Fletcher scored nine points for the Lady Wave. Riley (11 boards), Rice (10) and Fletcher (10) were all in double figures rebounding.
“Everybody had to move around a little bit with Brooke out,” Grundy Coach Bill Christian said.
“Elizabeth Lindsay hit some big shots. All the girls did a good job, especially Riley and Samantha Rice.”

Cobras Advance to BDD Semis With 71-47 Victory Over Hurley

by Lloyd Combs
Staff Reporter

Council advanced to the Black Diamond District semifinals with a 71-47 win over the Rebels in first round action Tuesday night at Twin Valley.
D.J. Barton tossed in 19 points to lead Council (11-11), which ended the first half with a 14-5 run to build a 34-22 lead.
The Cobras, which played without injured starter Wade Jackson, scored the first eight points of the second half and coasted the rest of the way.
Shane Compton scored 15 points, Justin Fuller added 13 and Robin Tiller tossed in 11 points for Council, which bounced back from a 68-64 loss at Hurley on Friday.
“We kept punching the ball inside, and that’s where we needed to get it,” Council Coach Neil Rasnake said.
“Our bench came in and played well. Robin Tiller came in and did a good job.”
Eric May scored 13 points before fouling out late in the third quarter for Hurley (3-19). Two other starters played much of the second half with four personal fouls for a Rebel squad that dressed just six players.
“We started worrying about fouls and (Council) fouling,” veteran Hurley Coach Harold Horne said. “And when they get other things on their minds besides basketball, it takes away from everything they’re doing.
“To play and do what you need to do on the court, you’ve got to keep your mind on what you’re doing and not what the referees are doing or what the other team’s doing.”
Josh Childress scored 14 points and Shane Slone finished with 12 points and four fouls for the Rebels.
Barton had five assists and was one of six players with five or more rebounds for Council, which held a 35-22 edge on the boards.
The Cobras will face BDD regular season champion Twin Valley in the second of two semifinal contests tonight (Thursday) at TVHS. Honaker takes on Haysi in the 6:00 p.m. opener.

Homecoming Provides Season's First BDD Win for Rebels, 67-46

by Lloyd Combs
Sports Reporter

Homecoming seems to bring out the best in Hurley.
The Rebels rallied in the second half for a 68-64 Black Diamond District win over Council on homecoming night Friday at Hurley High School.
Eric May poured in 26 points, while Josh Childress and Shane Shelton each added 18 to lead Hurley to its first BDD win since a homecoming victory over Honaker last season.
That trio, along with sophomore Scotty Hurley, led a key 8-0 run to end the third period that trimmed a 52-36 deficit in half.
“Maybe we should tell the kids it’s homecoming before every game,” Hurley Coach Harold Horne said.
“No, we started off slow, but we made a little bit of a run there at the end of the third quarter after (D.J.) Barton got hurt, and we got off to a good start in the fourth quarter.
“Then it sort of snowballed from there and when you get on a roll like we did, good things start to happen and it’s hard to stop.”
Barton, who suffered a foot injury late in the third period, but returned to play most of the fourth, scored 16 of his 18 points in the first half.
He was one of four double figure scorers for Council (10-11, 2-6 BDD). Caleb Epling had a double-double for the Cobras with 17 points and 12 rebounds.
Scotty Hurley hit a three-pointer near the end of the third period for the Rebels, while Childress hit a pair of treys in the fourth. Shelton, who scored eight points in the final period, nailed a three that tied the score at 54-54 with 4:09 remaining.
The teams traded baskets until Childress hit a three with 1:21 remaining that snapped a 58-58 tie and start an 8-1 run for Hurley, which outscored Council 32-12 over the final 11 minutes of the game.
“Josh and Shane hit some big shots and Scotty hit a big shot for us,” Horne added. “And Eric May stepped up and really got on the boards in the second half. I thought that was as important as us hitting our shots.”
May controlled the defensive boards in the second half for Hurley (3-18, 1-7 BDD). hauled in 15 rebounds, including 10 after halftime.
