Wave Earns SWD Playoff Win Against
G-Men, 58-52 |

Johnny Cash walked the line but Theo
Justus was the man who shot through it.
Justus poured in 25 points, including 15-of-19
free throws, as Grundy overcame a slow start to defeat Graham
58-52 Tuesday in a Southwest District playoff game at Tazewell
Middle School.
The Golden Wave (14-8) were set to host
Carroll County Wednesday at Tazewell Middle School at 6 p.m. to
determine the regular season title. Wednesday’s winner will host
the boys’ SWD tourney starting Thursday.
“I’d call Theo our answer to J.J.
Redick,” grinned Golden Wave Coach Greg Rife. “I was sure happy to
see him at the free throw line so many times tonight.”
Following two days off for snow in
both counties, the G-Men and Wave were nearly as cold as the
weather.
It was only 2-2 with 3:20 left
in the opening stanza.
Grundy led 9-6 after the opening
quarter.
Graham rallied to within three points
late in the game, and Rife admitted he was concerned when
hard-working Jimmy Ashby fouled out.
“Yes, I was,” noted Rife. “At
that point, Graham had about two minutes left and plenty of time
to work their offense. That was a crucial point in the game but we
were able to work through it.”
The Wave patiently stayed
in front through most of the first half, as well.
Matt Yost’s free throws gave
the G-Men their only lead, at 4-2, midway through the opening
period.
Bobby Peck hit a trey for the
Golden Wave in the second stanza while Graham’s J.D. Hunter and
Robert Henry went downtown for threes as Grundy held an
18-13 halftime advantage.
“Grundy did what they needed to do to
win,” said Graham mentor Glynn Carlock Jr. “We just stood around
too much, were a little lethargic, and didn’t rebound well. We
missed too many shots.
“Give Grundy credit, they deserved it
tonight. We had a good practice yesterday but unfortunately it
didn’t carry over for us.”

Ashley Cook hasn’t been called on to score much for Grundy this
season, but she was ready when the Lady Wave turned to the senior
guard on Tuesday.
Cook’s three-pointer forced overtime
where Grundy shut out Graham to earn a 66-57 win in the Southwest
District semifinals Tuesday at Riverview Elementary-Middle School.
Tazewell topped Carroll County,
46-36, in Tuesday’s semifinal opener.
Grundy, with leading scorer Brooke
Shepherd sidelined with a foot injury, outscored Graham 9-0 in the
extra period to advance to tonight’s (Thursday’s) SWD finals and
Cook, who scored five of her 10 points in the fourth quarter,
scored five more in OT.
Kaitlyn Riley scored a
game-high 26 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter for Grundy
(18-3) before fouling out. The versatile freshman had a
double-double with 10 rebounds.
Amber Carbaugh scored 10 of her 25
points in the fourth quarter, while Kathleen Bourne tossed in 13
of her 20 points in the third period for Graham, which overcame a
23-18 halftime deficit to take an eight-point lead in the second
half.
Allison Fletcher scored 12 points,
while Kasey Bowman and Elizabeth Lindsay combined for 15 points
for the Lady Wave.
