Bertha Ellen Coleman
(Pilgrim's Knob)

  Bertha Ellen (Ma Ma) Helton Coleman, 92, of the Pilgrim's Knob section of Oakwood, died Friday, February 9, 2007 at her home.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late William and Ella Hess Helton. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a member of Keen Mountain Pentecostal Church. She was a homemaker.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Holland Coleman, May 23, 1980;  two sisters, Leona Dye and Rosa Helton; and five brothers, Walter Helton, Lodie Helton, Harmon Helton, Paul Helton and Thomas Helton.
  She is survived by three daughters, Linda Goss of Oakwood, Narcie and husband, Gary Knipper of Pounding Mill and Janice and husband, Stuart Gibson, of Durand, MI; six sons, Boyd and wife, Ann Coleman of Rowe, Carl and wife, Linda Coleman of Keen Mountain, Holland B. and wife, Pamela Coleman, Jr. of Oakwood, Harvey and wife, Phyllis Coleman of Richlands, Daniel and wife, Beverly Coleman of Millington, MI and Douglas and wife, Ebony Coleman, of Bristol; one sister, Gladys Hopson of Kingsport, TN; two brothers, Edd and wife, Lenora Helton of Richlands and David and wife, Rachael Helton of Drill; 18 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
  Services were held Monday, February 12 at Keen Mountain Pentecostal Church with Brothers Randy Webb and Boyd Coleman officiating. Burial followed in the Hess Cemetery on Miller Creek Road near Swords Creek.
  Active pallbearers were grandchildren.
  Honorary pallbearers were James Goss, Ralph Horton, David Horton, James Horton, Jan Coleman, Don Smith, Annis McGlothlin, Brother T.R. Stump, Dr. H.C. Scott, Earl Compton, Georgia Compton, Harley Coleman and special friends - - Shirley Gross, Linda Keen, Garnie Keen and nurse, Missy O'Quinn.
  Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Martha Jane Daniels
(Hurley)

  Martha Jane Davis Allen Daniels, 86, of Hurley, died Saturday, February 10, 2007 in Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy.
  Born in McDowell County, she was the daughter of the late Charlie Lee Davis and Rosalie Lester Davis. She was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Boyd Allen; her second husband, Samuel Daniels, Jr.; two daughters, Tennessee Dawson and Ethel Mae Allen; two sons, Dan Lee Allen and Arlin Justus; two sisters; one brother; one grandson, Danny Lee Allen; and one great-great-grandson, Joshua Deel.
  She is survived by three daughters, Oma Jean Blankenship and husband, Raymond, and Opalene Allen, all of Hurley and  Angel Ella Faye Baker and husband, Robert, of Spokane, WA; two sons, Boyd Rex Allen and wife, Beverly Jo, and Richard Allen and wife, Janet, all of Hurley; two sisters, Polly Miller of Washington and Ida Blair of Arkansas; 17 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and special companion, Zeb Allen of Hurley.
  Services were held Wednesday, February 14, at Mary Lou Old Regular Baptist Church at Stateline Ridge #1 in Paynesville, WV with Elders Harold Thornsbury, Darrell Mullins, Ezra Davis, Jr. and Jack Horne officiating. Burial followed in the Noah Mullins Cemetery on Stateline Ridge #1, Paynesville.
  Active pallbearers were family and friends.

Ricky Allen Lee
(Grundy)

  Ricky Allen Lee, 52, of Grundy, died Tuesday, February 6, 2007 in Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy, following an extended illness.
  Born in Tazewell County, he was the son of Blake and Joann Childress Lee, of Grundy. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a graduate of Grundy Senior High School's class of 1972 and a member of the Grundy Church of Christ. He was a member of the Tri-City Corvette Club, the National Corvette Council and was the president/owner of Ricky Lee's Body Shop.
  He was preceded in death by two brothers, Michael and Randy Lee, and father-in-law, Judas Lester.
  In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Shirley Lester Lee; three brothers, Rodney and wife, Kitty Cochran Lee and Timmy Lee, all of Grundy and Freddy and wife, Vicky Stump Lee of Roanoke; mother-in-law, Vertie Osborne Lester of Abingdon; two sisters-in-law, Brenda and husband, Jackie Estep and Teresa and husband, Ronald Matney, all of Abingdon; one brother-in-law, Jeffrey Lester of Richmond; six nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Friday, February 9 at the Grundy Church of Christ with Evg. Dennis Wimmer and Evg. William L. Neeley officiating. Entombment followed in Mountain Rest Mausoleum at Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Active pallbearers were David Deel, Tim Elswick, Tracy Weiss, Gary Matney, Steve Mullins, Richard Higgins, Sonee Hall, Eddie Connors, Ricky Fields, David Matney, Anthony Matney, Doug Matney, Dean Seitz, Sid Dunford, Dan Island and John Snead.
  Honorary pallbearers were elders and deacons of the Grundy Church of Christ, Dr. Clint Sutherland and Bob Breimann.
  Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Tenna Ann Harris
(Council)

  Tenna Ann Harris, 39, of the Indian Creek section of Council, died Friday, February 9, 2007 at her home.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Violene Hess. She was a lifelong resident of the area.
  In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by one sister, Brenda Joyce Hess, and two brothers, Ronald Anthony Austin and Eddie Lee Austin.
  She is survived by her husband, Ricky Lee Harris; three daughters, Cindy Lee Harris and Kimberly Faye Harris, both of the home and Brandi Adkins of Hurricane Creek; three grandchildren, Jasmine Ann Harris, Kenneth Nathaniel Adkins and Trinity Hope Puckett; one sister, Norma Jean Neeley of Davenport; one brother, Danny, and wife, Tilda Austin of Davenport; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
  Services were held Monday in Honaker with the Revs. Roy Lee Wilson and Robert Tiller officiating. Interment followed in the Austin Cemetery at Council.
  Pallbearers were Chris Compton, Timothy Ball, Wesley Ball, Danny Harris, Chester Ball, Leroy Ball and Chris Davidson.
  Honorary pallbearers were Virgil Crabtree and Chadrick Ball.


Gregory Eugene Potter
(Grundy)

  Gregory Eugene Potter, 37, of Grundy, died Friday, February 9, 2007 at his home.
  Born in Tazewell, he was the son of  Clayton Eugene (Gene) Potter and Thelma Lester Potter, of Grundy. He was a member of  Big Rock Church of Christ and was a 1987 graduate of Grace Christian Academy. He was an avid outdoorsman.
  He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Kinnard and Eunice Potter, and his maternal grandparents, Jonah and Elizabeth Lester.
  In addition to his parents, he is survived by several aunts and uncles.
  Services were held Sunday, February 11 at Big Rock Church of Christ with Evg. Sam Casebolt officiating. Entombment followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Pallbearers were Gary Lester, Michael Pugh, Tim Potter, Ron Keith Lester, Elster Ramey, Bob Little, Roger Smith, Frank Hankins and Paul Eddie Lester.
  Honorary pallbearers were Keith Stiltner, Ervin Stiltner, Gary Smith, Dr. J.P. Sutherland, Jr. and Donnie Potter.

Monnie Harris Wilson
(Council)

  Monnie Harris Wilson, 84, of the Combs Ridge section of Council, died Wednesday, February 7, 2007 at her home.
  Born in Council, she was a daughter of the late Hampton and Ora Hurt Harris. A lifelong resident of the area, she was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Holland Wilson; one grandson, Darrell Ball; great-granddaughter, Naomi Lee Ball; three sisters, Carmie Combs, Ethel Ball and Ona Ball; seven brothers, Stewart Harris, Hewlet Harris, Carson Harris, Elbert Harris, Marion Harris, Hampton Harris, Jr. and Bernard Johnson; and her step-father, Marvin Johnson.
  She is survived by one daughter, Virginia, and husband, Bill Ball, of Council; three sons, Carter, and wife, Velva Wilson, of Abingdon, Delano and wife, Letha Wilson and Curtis and wife, Nancy Wilson, all of Council; one sister, Maudie Johnson, of Berwind, WV; grandchildren, Rita and Paul Hale, Roger Ball, Shannon Ball, Randall and Jalena Wilson, Pam and Darian Compton, Debbie and Mick Compton, Justin and Jason Wilson and Larry and Debbie Ball; great-grandchildren, Larissa and Josh Ball, Kaliegh and Kaleb Wilson, Megan and Layken Compton and Anthony and Kelly Ball; several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Saturday in Honaker with the Rev. Giles Wilson and the Rev. Roy Lee Wilson officiating. Interment followed in the Harris Cemetery on Combs Ridge.
  Pallbearers were Roger Ball, Shannon Ball, Randy Wilson, Justin Wilson, Jason Wilson, Larry Ball, Mick Compton, Darian Compton and Paul Hale.
  Honorary pallbearers were Farley Combs, Clyde Harris, Harless Harris, Dr. Dwight Bailey, Bernard and Edith Sykes, James Harris, Miles Honaker and Ervin Johnson.


Ricky Joe Hager
(Oakwood)

  Ricky Joe Hager, 42, of Oakwood, died Wednesday, February 7, 2007.
  Born in Richlands, he was a son of Stella Dodd Hager of Oakwood and the late Kerman Odell Hager, Sr. He was a graduate of Garden High School where he was selected for the All-American Band during his junior and senior years.
  In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one brother, Jerry Hager.
  In addition to his mother, he is survived by two brothers, Kerman Odell Hager, Jr. and wife, Donna, of Oakwood and Terry Hager and wife, Margaret, of Springfield; two sisters, Carol Matthews and husband, Danny, of Eaton, GA and Sandra Riggsby and husband, Sonny, of Keen Mountain; sister-in-law, Deborah Hager of Keen Mountain; several nieces and nephews.
  Graveside services were held Saturday, February 10 at Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum, Claypool Hill.
  Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society, 1808 Jefferson Street, Bluefield, WV 24701.
  Buchanan Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Shelby Jean Hays
(Richlands)

  Shelby Jean Skeens Hays, 52, of Richlands, died Monday, February 12, 2007 at Johnson City Medical Center following a brief illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Lee and Lois Logan Skeens, both Pike County, KY natives. She was a graduate of Grundy Senior High School, was a former hairdresser and had lived most of her life in Buchanan County until moving to the Richlands area 13 years ago.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her former husband, Dennie Edward Hays, two sisters and one brother.
  She is survived by two daughters, Kimberley Griffith of Bluefield, WV and Amanda Griffith of Richlands; one son, James M. Barrow, II, of Richlands; one sister, Della Lester and husband, Billy, of Big Rock; four grandchildren, Brandon Lowe, Savannah Lowe, Michaela Newell and Michael Trey Newell.
  Services were held Wednesday, February 14 at Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands with the Rev. Bill Lester and the Rev. Ronnie Parks officiating. Interment followed in Forest Hills Cemetery in Abingdon.
  Pallbearers were Allen Lester, Cecil Hess, Matt Roae, Randy Lester, Ricky Lester and Larry Hayes.
  Hurst-Scott Funeral Home, Richlands, was in charge of arrangements.


Alta Elswick
(St. Clair Shores, MI)

  Alta Elswick, 88, a 30-year resident of St. Clair Shores, MI, died Monday, February 12, 2007 at St. John Hospital in Detroit, MI.
  Born in Dickenson County, she was a daughter of the late Mack and Lucindy Coleman Charles but was raised by Walcie and Harlis Coleman. She was a homemaker and was of the Old Regular Baptist faith.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cline, in 1980.
  She is survived by her two sons, Glenn (Elia) Elslwick and Jim (Fran) Elswick, both of Michigan; one brother, Fred Charles; and three grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
  Services will be held  Friday, February 16 at 11 a.m. at Haysi Funeral Home with Elder Frank Newsome officiating. Burial will follow in Johnson Memorial Gardens, Pikeville, KY. Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday, February 15 at the funeral home.
  Haysi Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Russell William Eddy
(Alexandria, VA)

  Russell William Eddy, 94, of Alexandria, died Saturday, February 10, 2007.
  He was the former owner of the Alexandria Marine Service.
  He is survived by his wife, Eliza Fletcher Eddy; sisters-in-law, Pauline and Yvonne Eddy; and numerous nieces and nephews.
  Services will be held today (Thursday), February 15, at Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home.
