Presidential
candidates
Barack
Obama
(D)
and
John
McCain
(R)
were
victorious
in
Virginia's
primary
election
Tuesday.
In
Buchanan
County,
their
respective
rivals
in
the
race
for
the
nominations
were
favored
by
local
voters,
as
Hillary
Clinton
(D)
and
Mike
Huckabee
(R)
were
the
popular
candidates.
With
over
96
percent
of
precincts
reporting,
Obama,
a
political
underdog
before
emerging
as
a
viable
opponent
to
the
heavily-favored
Clinton,
secured
611,718
total
votes
in
Virginia
Tuesday
as
unofficial
returns
were
announced,
besting
the
former
first
lady's
vote
count
of
337,828.
McCain
managed
240,679
votes
in
the
state
with
only
a
few
precincts
yet
to
report
totals,
topping
Huckabee's
tally
of
188,016.
Exit
polls
showed
both
Obama
and
McCain
as
winners
in
Virginia
shortly
after
the
polls
closed
at
7
p.m.
Clinton
received
nearly
90
percent
of
the
Democratic
vote
in
Buchanan
County,
logging
a
whopping
2,243
votes
to
Obama's
226.
County
Republicans
favored
Huckabee
to
the
tune
of
393
votes,
or
almost
58
percent
of
the
total.
McCain
received
257
votes
locally.

Sheriff
Reports
Three
Area
Scams
|
|
by

Three
separate
scam
efforts
are
making
their
way
through
the
county,
according
to
Sheriff
Ray
Foster.
The
sheriff's
office
has
its
eye
on
one
individual
suspected
of
going
door-to-door
asking
for
donations
for
the
needy.
Foster
said
the
individual,
who
claims
to
represent
a
local
church,
is
asking
for
money
in
order
to
purchase
winter
coats
for
those
in
need.
"We're
getting
ready
to
charge
her,"
Foster
said.
Two
additional
scams
are
reportedly
phone-related.
At
least
one
elderly
person
has
reported
to
the
sheriff's
office
an
incident
where
she
was
asked
to
provide
her
bank
account
information
so
a
Social
Security
representative
could
add
more
funds
to
the
account.
Foster
said
that
request
is
fraudulent
and
no
such
information
should
be
given
over
the
phone.
Those
with
questions
about
funds
should
contact
Social
Security
directly,
he
said.
A
third
scam
sees
phone
calls
placed
to
local
residents,
asking
for
them
to
renew
an
expiring
vehicle
warranty.
Warranty-holders
should
contact
the
companies
directly
for
information
regarding
their
current
status,
Foster
said.
