A
shorthanded Grundy squad had another good showing
against a strong tournament field, finishing tied for
third
in the Big Orange Classic last weekend at
William
Byrd High School near Roanoke.
Josh
McCowan won the tournament title at 152 pounds
and
Ethan Owens also reached the finals for Grundy,
which
tied Brookville for third with 149.5 points
each.
Franklin
County, which won the Agie Skeens tournament
in
Grundy in December, won the team crown with 224.5
points,
42.5 points ahead of second place Northside.
Seven
other wrestlers placed in the top six for
Grundy,
which has one regular sidelined by injury,
junior
Kaleb Smith, and was short a couple of other
regulars
for various reasons. |

“We’re missing some guys,”
Grundy coach Travis Fiser
said.
“But a couple of guys stepped up. Some guys ran
into
some hard luck and had a tough weekend.”

Three
Grundy wrestlers placed third: Jon Dotson at 125
pounds,
Jarrett Landis at 135 and senior Josh Ratliff
at 215
pounds.
Josh
Lee was fourth at 189 and Billy Owens fifth at
103
pounds. Jerami Bartley was up, 6-3, in his
semifinal
match at 160 pounds when his knee locked up.
Bartley
lost that match by injury default and lost by
forfeit
in the consolations and wound up sixth.
Heavyweight
Andy Stiltner also placed sixth for the
Golden
Wave.
“I
thought it was a tough tournament,” Fiser said.
“Some
brackets looked like state. Heavyweight was
pretty
deep as far as talent. There were some good
kids,
a lot of fans. It was pretty loud. It was a good
atmosphere.”
