Paul Skeens
(Grundy)

  Paul Skeens, 73, of the Rt. 5 section of Grundy, died Monday, January 22, 2007 at his home.
  Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Cecil and Eva Mae Vandyke Skeens. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, served in the United States Army and was of the Church of Christ faith. He was a retired machine operator for United Coal Company.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jackson Skeens, in 1996; one brother,  Oscar Skeens; and two sisters, Carmie Skeens and Edna Miller.
  He is survived by one daughter, Eva, and husband Ronald Davis, of Grundy; three sons, Randy and wife, Kay Skeens of Vansant, Anthony and wife, Susan Skeens, of Grundy and Steven Skeens of Kingsport, TN; two sisters, Emma Davis and Lois Looney, both of Vansant; four brothers, Phillip (A.C.) and wife, Janet Skeens, of Grundy, James and wife, Janet Skeens and Onnie Skeens, all of Vansant and Marion and wife, Eula Faye Skeens, of Abingdon; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Saturday, January 27 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evg. Mike Rife and Evg. William L. (Bill)  Neeley officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock. Full military rites were held at the cemetery by members of John Ratliff Post No. 164 of the American Legion.
  Active pallbearers were Marcus McClanahan, Joe Looney, Terry Looney, Bobby Skeens, Keith Skeens, Shane Skeens, Chris Belcher, Michael Hackney and Matthew Justice.
  Honorary pallbearers were Dr. R. Patel, Dr. J.G. Patel, Curt O'Quinn, John L. Huffman, Ken Potter, Ray Hall, Dr. D. Patel, Joe Bill and Clint Ratliff.
  Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Dollie Marie Smith
(Oakwood)

  Dollie Marie Smith, 75, of Oakwood, died Tuesday, January 23, 2007.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Madison Perry and Priscilla Boyd Jackson.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, George Smith; her second husband, Ervin Smith; one daughter, Debra Lynn Bragg; four brothers, Elbert Jackson, Robert Lee Jackson, George Jackson and William C. Jackson; and two sisters, Edna Jackson and Genoa Compton.
  She is survived by one grandson, Chris Smith and wife, Thelma, of Rowe; two granddaughters, Misty Bragg of Richlands and Bobbi Mounts of Lebanon; two sisters, Betty Boyd of Vansant and Emma Street of Rowe; two great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Friday, January 26 at Buchanan Funeral Sevice Chapel at Keen Mountain, with the Rev. Luther Bowman and the Rev. Anthony Hale officiating. Burial followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill.
  Pallbearers were family and friends.
  Buchanan Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.


Pauline Bailey
(Vansant)

  Pauline Bailey, 63, of Vansant, died Wednesday, January 24, 2007 following an extended illness.
  Born in Tazewell County, she was the daughter of the late George and Julia Messer. She was a 1961 graduate of Garden High School and was a member of the Church of Christ.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her twin sister, Ernestine Messer and one additional sister, Ava Nell Dotson; and one infant daughter, Debbie Jean Bailey.
  She is survived by two sons, Rod Bailey and wife, Diana, of Vansant and Tim Bailey and wife, Sheryl, of Rowe; four brothers, George (Junior) Messer, Jr. of Rowe, Carter Messer of Richlands, Charles (Chuck) Messer of Mesquite, TX and Jimmy Messer and wife, Mary, of Dallas, NC; three sisters, Gladys Hill and husband, Donald, of Vansant, Betty Stiltner of Richlands and Bonnie Halton and husband, Joseph, of Rochester, NY; two grandsons, Jarrod Bailey and Jamie Bailey; one granddaughter, Ashlee Bailey; and one great-grandson.
  Services were held Saturday, January 27 at Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel at Keen Mountain with Evg. Mike Rife officiating. Burial followed in Ketron Memorial Cemetery, Lebanon.
  Pallbearers were family and friends.
  Buchanan Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.


Estil Vandyke
(Dry Fork)

  Estil Greenberry Vandyke, 80, of the Dry Fork section of Vansant, died Thursday, January 25, 2007 at Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport, TN, following a brief illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Arthur and Polly Ann Sisk Vandyke. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, served in the United States Army and was a member of Dry Fork Primitive Baptist Church. He was a retired coal miner.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lottie Yates Vandyke, November 28, 2001; one infant daughter, Loretta Vandyke; four sisters, Pauline Copenhaver, Martha Street, Ruth Viers and Mary Cox; and two brothers, Carl and Linkous Vandyke.
  He is survived by three sons, Stevie and wife, Regina Vandyke and Terry Vandyke, all of Vansant and Billy and wife, Beverly Vandyke of Asheboro, NC; two sisters, Belle Anderson of Vansant and Cindy and husband, Luther Auxter of Freemont, OH; two brothers, Junior and wife, Martha Vandyke and Clarence Vandyke, all of Vansant; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
  Services were held Sunday, January 28 at Dry Fork Primitive Baptist Church at Vansant with Elders Estle Hackney, Brian Moore, Mike Smith, Shawn Dotson and Jeff Dotson officiating. Burial followed in Dry Fork Community Cemetery on Baldwin Mountain near Vansant. Full military rites were held at the cemetery by members of John Ratliff Post No. 164 of the American Legion.
  Active pallbearers were Albert Cook, Ron Moore, Roger Deel, Estle Hackney, Brian Moore, Mike Smith, Shawn Dotson and Jeff Dotson.
  Honorary pallbearers were Nicholas Vandyke, Kevin Vandyke and nephews.
  Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Mary Lee Riley
(Big Rock)

  Mary Lee Adams Riley, 62, of Big Rock, died Friday, January 26, 2007 at Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy.
  Born in Pike County, KY, she was the daughter of the late Elick and Hazel Morgan Adams. She was a resident of Buchanan County most of her life and a member of Harman Holiness Church. She was a homemaker.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, one brother and one grandchild.
  She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Wayne Riley; four daughters, Samantha and husband, Carlos Rodriguez of Fullerton, CA, Janet Romero of Wisconsin and Lora Coleman and Shevella and husband, Christopher Justice, all of Pikeville, KY; one son, Kenneth and wife, Rosa Linda Cantrell of Corona, CA; one sister, Shirley Meade of Phyllis, KY; 10 grandchildren, one great-grandchild and one nephew.
  Services were held Tuesday, January 30 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Danny Hess and the Rev. Richard Gibson officiating. Burial followed in the family cemetery on the left fork of Home Creek near Big Rock.
  Active pallbearers were Arthur Riley, Jackie Chapman, Herman Lester, Jr., Robert Riley, Chris Justice, Mike Riley and David Snipes.
  Honorary pallbearers were Herman Lester, Gary Dean Riley, Mary Ann Collins, N.P., employees of Dr. Pillai, employees of Jiffy Cleaners and Jiffy Tan and employees of Land Mark Inn.
  Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Lester Deel
(Haysi, VA)

  Lester Deel, 57, of Rt. 2, Haysi, died Thursday, January 25, 2007 at Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands.
  He was a son of the late Princey and Lacey Deel.
  Born in Buchanan County, he was a foreman for SHM, Inc. and was of the Old Regular Baptist faith.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Deel.
  He is survived by his wife, Robin Deel; one daughter, Lenore (Jan) Lockhart of Christiansburg; three grandchildren, Nicolas, Ella and Jordan Lockhart; one sister, Jerlene (Glen) Owens of Haysi; three brothers, Steve (Marcia) Deel, Larry (Brenda) Deel and Gary (Patricia) Deel, all of Haysi; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Monday, January 29 at Russell Prater Old Regular Baptist Church with Elders Denny Deel, Roger Coleman and Terry O'quinn officiating. Burial followed in the A.F. Deel Cemetery at Rt. 2, Haysi.
  Pallbearers were Russell Deel, Aaron Deel, Matthew Owens, Roger Deel and Jon Lockhart.
  Honorary pallbearers were employees of SHM, Inc.
  Haysi Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Charlie Breeding
(Davenport, VA)

  Charlie Breeding, 85, of Davenport, died Sunday, January 28, 2007 in Lebanon following a brief illness.
  Born in Davenport, he was a son of the late George and Effie Jackson Breeding.
  A lifelong resident of the Davenport area, he was a United States Army veteran, having served in World War II. He began his career with the Buchanan County School System in 1938 as a custodian at Grundy High School. Except for two years in the military and another short break to construct houses, he worked for Buchanan County Schools until his retirement in 1982. During this time, he worked in many capacities including teaching carpentry at the vocational school and maintenance supervisor. He was a master carpenter. Following retirement, he continued in his workshop making spinning wheels, musical instruments, and many craft items. He was a Christian.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Iline Jackson Breeding; one brother, Clyde Breeding;  one son-in-law, Harold Mitchell; and one great-granddaughter, Krista Leigh Snead.
  He is survived by three sons, Harold Dean Breeding and Charlie Breeding, Jr. both of the home, and Eddie Breeding and wife, Edna Sue of Lebanon; two daughters, Joyce Mitchell of Council and Phyllis Statzer of Lebanon; three sisters, Ola Gay Fletcher of Lebanon, Shirley Owens of Hurt and Linda Church and husband, Roger, of Grundy; one sister-in-law, Margie White of Jonesborough, TN; two grandsons, Chris Presley and wife, Christine and Preston Breeding and wife, Crystal; four granddaughters, Tenita Mitchell, Tracy Mitchell, Roberta Willis and husband, Kevin, and Shelley Breeding; three great-grandsons, Lee Willis, Dustin Clevinger, and Emmitt Breeding; four great-granddaughters, Casey Snead, Sarah Outen, Krista Willis, and Emma Clevinger; three step-great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren, and nine
step-great-great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Wednesday in Honaker with the Rev. Troy Harris and the Rev. Edward Tiller officiating. Honorary ministers were the Rev. Clyde Lambert and the Rev. Ancil Childress. Interment followed in Ketron Memorial Gardens, Lebanon. Military graveside services were conducted by VFW Post 9864 of Lebanon.
  Pallbearers were Chris Presley, Kevin Willis, Dennis Clevinger, Preston Breeding, John Payne, Treamon Jackson, Fred Breeding, and Greg Ball.
