Fire Destroys Deel Home

A mother and her three-year-old son were able to escape their burning home at Deel last Wednesday after a flue fire started which destroyed the home.
Donna Fuller and her son, Bascom, were able to escape the blaze which started around 9:30 a.m.
According to H.C. Van Meter, who owned the rental home located next door to his own home, he learned of the fire after three-year-old Bascom ran next door to his home to report the fire.
Van Meter said the doorbell rang at his home around 9:30 a.m., but when his wife answered the door, there was no one there. A few minutes later, the bell sounded again and this time when she answered the door, Bascom was there to report, "my house is on fire."
The fire was reported to the fire department and Van Meter said he went next door immediately. He said as he entered the kitchen area of the home, he could see  fire next to the stove and in the ceiling. He began helping Donna Fuller collect some of the family's personal belongings, including photographs. Part of the ceiling started falling in the kitchen and struck Fuller on the back of the head and caught Van Meter on the hand. Both suffered minor injuries, but escaped the fire.
The family truck was moved and young Bascom's bicycle was also recovered before the flames engulfed the carport area of the home.
No further details were available at press time.

Levisa Discharge Bills Fail

A joint public hearing conducted by the Buchanan County School Board and the Buchanan County Board of Supervisors will be held February 5 to consider the temporary closure of Rt. 680, Bill Young Mountain road beginning in June.
The public hearing will get underway at 1 p.m. in the board room of the Buchanan County Courthouse.
School Superintendent Tommy P. Justus told members of the school board Tuesday that he had met Monday with representatives of the Virginia Department of Transportation, Bizzack Inc., the contractor on the project, County Administrator W.J. Caudill and North Grundy Supervisor Carroll Branham to discuss the project.
According to a public notice in this week's issue of the Mountaineer, the supervisors and the school board are eyeing the road closure from the end of the current school year in June until school's August reopening date in order to save both time and money in the reconstruction of Rt. 680.
While school is in session in 2007 and 2008, the road is proposed to be closed from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily to accommodate construction needs, related to blasting and safety.
Also expected to be discussed during the public hearing is travel by emergency and rescue vehicles.
Garden School Board Member Steve Hamro III made the motion to hold the public hearing on the proposed road closure and Prater School Board Member Bill Crigger seconded the motion. It was agreed to unanimously.
The road project was recently awarded to Bizzack Inc. by the Virginia Department of Transportation and is expected to get underway this spring.
