Stephanie
Cornett’s double-double helped Council
advance to Wednesday’s semifinals of the Coal Classic
with a 51-34 win over host Appalachia Tuesday evening.
Cornett scored a game-high 14 points and added 10
rebounds, six assists and three steals for Council,
which never trailed.
After a slow start, especially from the perimeter, the
Lady Cobras broke down the Lady Bulldogs defense,
snapping a 14-14 tie with a 9-1 run to end the first
half.
Council took a 23-15 halftime lead and extended it to
42-22 with a 13-3 run that began late in the third
quarter.
“We struggled a little bit early against their zone,”
Council coach Dave Rasnake said. “But the girls did a
good job recognizing what the defense was giving us.
And we did a little better job defensively in the
second half.”
Freshmen Katie Thomas and Dakota Bostic added 10 and
eight points, respectively, for Council. Sophomore
Haley Arrington added nine points and Bostic had four
steals for the Lady Cobras, who forced 18 turnovers.
Leigha Lambert scored 10 points and Erin Wilson added
nine points for Appalachia.
