Haysi and Honaker split most of the top honors on the 2006 All-Black Diamond District football team.
Haysi’s Chad Barton was named BDD Player of the Year.
An all-around standout, Barton earned first team honors at running back and defensive back and as a punter and kick returner. Veteran coach James Colley of Haysi was named BDD Coach of the Year.
Three other Haysi seniors earned top honors, while Honaker senior linebacker Justin Newberry was voted BDD Defensive Player of the Year. Newberry also earned Defensive Linebacker/Back of the Year.
Twin Valley senior Wyatt Justus, who ran for some 1,500 yards, shared BDD Offensive Player of the Year honors with Haysi quarterback Lance Compton, who led the district with 20 touchdown passes.
Senior tight end Michael Tiller of Honaker was named Offensive Lineman of the Year.
Haysi’s Nathan Boyd, who hauled in 12 TD passes, was tabbed as the Offensive Back/Receiver of the Year, while teammate Joshua Edwards was named Defensive Lineman/End of the Year.
Twin Valley filled five of the first team spots on the First Team offense and defense. The other 27 spots were filled by Tigers, 14 from BDD champ Haysi and 13 from Honaker.

Lady Cobras Advance to Semifinals of Coal Classic with 51-34 Win Over Host Appalachia

by Lloyd Combs
Sports Reporter

Stephanie Cornett’s double-double helped Council advance to Wednesday’s semifinals of the Coal Classic with a 51-34 win over host Appalachia Tuesday evening.
Cornett scored a game-high 14 points and added 10 rebounds, six assists and three steals for Council, which never trailed.
After a slow start, especially from the perimeter, the Lady Cobras broke down the Lady Bulldogs defense, snapping a 14-14 tie with a 9-1 run to end the first half.
Council took a 23-15 halftime lead and extended it to 42-22 with a 13-3 run that began late in the third quarter.
“We struggled a little bit early against their zone,” Council coach Dave Rasnake said. “But the girls did a good job recognizing what the defense was giving us. And we did a little better job defensively in the second half.”
Freshmen Katie Thomas and Dakota Bostic added 10 and eight points, respectively, for Council. Sophomore Haley Arrington added nine points and Bostic had four steals for the Lady Cobras, who forced 18 turnovers.
Leigha Lambert scored 10 points and Erin Wilson added nine points for Appalachia.
