Sharon Joy
Bunch Smith, 64, of Big Rock, died Thursday, December 21,
2006 at Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy.
Born in Logan, WV, she was the daughter of the late
George Bunch and Erie Napier Bunch. She was a homemaker and
member of the Fountain of Life Tabernacle Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death
by one son, Timothy Ray Smith; two brothers, George Bunch
Jr. and Donald Bunch; and two sisters, Louella Hannon and
Mary Alice Bunch Spencer.
She is survived by her husband, Billy Roger Smith;
five daughters, Sherry Lester of Big Rock, Brenda Love and
husband, Gene, of Vansant, Patricia Lowe and husband, Doug,
of Conaway, Angela Yates and husband, Joey, of Grundy and
Alisha Stiltner and husband, Billy, of Big Rock; one son,
Billy Smith of Big Rock; four sisters, Maxine (Ida) Smith of
Grundy, Janice Dean of Joliet, IL, Loretta Baldwin of
Dayton, OH and Erie Lee Appeldoom of Tellico Plains, IN;
three brothers, Paul Bunch of Huntington, WV, Freeman Bunch
of South Point, OH and Wayne Bunch of Joliet; nine
grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services were held Sunday, December 24 at 2 p.m. at
Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home, Grundy, with the Revs. Larry
David Ratliff, Tony Lowe and Willard Sturgeon officiating.
Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
Active pallbearers were family and friends.

William C.
"Bill" Jackson, 78, of Council, died Sunday,
December 24, 2006 at his home following an extended illness.
Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late
Matt and Priscilla Boyd Jackson. He was a charter member, a
deacon and trustee of the Free Christian Church at Big A
Mountain where he maintained a perfect attendance for 22
years. He was a retired employee of Pittston Coal Company
and was a member of UMWA Local 1256.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death
by two brothers, Bob Jackson and George Jackson, and one
sister, Genoa Compton.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Tiller Jackson; one
son, William "BJ" Jackson and wife, Maria, of
Blacksburg; four daughters, Anna T. Breeding and husband,
Ransome, of Council, Marlene T. Turner and husband, Randall,
of Davenport, Darlene T. Duty of Charlotte, NC and Meredith
T. "Punkin" Hart and husband, Roger, of Council;
one sister, Emma Street of Rowe; six grandchildren, Sonja
Bedwell, Vanessa Parker, Veronica Wilson, Miranda Metz, Tony
Duty and Michaiah Jackson; and three great-grandsons.
Services were held Wednesday, December 27 at Free
Christian Church with the Revs. Clyde Lambert and Edward
Tiller officiating. Entombment followed in Ketron Memorial
Mausoleum, Lebanon.
Pallbearers were Ben Metz, Rex Parker, Jeff Wilson,
Tony Duty, Larry E. Tiller, Tylor Bedwell, Blake Bedwell and
Michaiah Jackson.
Honorary pallbearers were deacons and trustees of
Free Christian Church.
Haysi High School was in charge of arrangements.

Deel
(Vansant)
Sidney Deel,
75, of the Warfork section of Vansant, died Saturday,
December 23, 2006 at his home.
He was a son of the late Lewis and Noami Stiltner
Deel and a member of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death
by brothers, Clyde Deel, Emmit Deel and Dorsey Deel and one
sister, Martha Owens.
He is survived by his wife, Charlene Deel; two
daughters, Patsy Ann Deel of the home and Tina Louise Woods
of Abingdon; one son, George Allen Deel of Vansant; three
grandchildren, Crystal Lynn Woods of Bristol, VA and Amber
Dawn Woods and Kimberly Nicole Woods, both of Abingdon and
son-in-law, Ricky Allen Woods; brothers, Glen Deel and Manis
Deel, both of Haysi and James Deel of Lexington, NC;
sisters, Bertha Stiltner Looney of Dismal, Minnie Richardson
and Shirley McFalls, both of Florida and Ruby Yates of Haysi;
several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews.
Services were held Tuesday, December 26 at Haysi
Funeral Home. Burial followed in the O'quinn-Deel Cemetery
at Rt. 2, Haysi.
Pallbearers were family and friends.

Scammell, Jr.
(Poplar
Creek)
Joseph Scammell,
Jr., 80, of the Poplar Creek section of Rt. 2, Grundy, died
Tuesday, December 19, 2006 at Buchanan General Hospital in
Grundy following an extended illness.
Born in West Virginia, he was a son of the late
Joseph Scammell, Sr. and Ellen Guess Scammell. He had been a
resident of Buchanan County most of his life and was a
member of the Poplar Creek Church of Christ. He served in
the United States Army during World War II and was a member
of John Ratliff Post #164 of the American Legion. He was a
retired employee of Harman Mining Corp. and a member of
United Mine Workers of America Local Union No. 7025. He was
the last surviving member of his immediate family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death
by his wife, Joan Juanita Stiltner Scammell, May 30, 1996;
one son, Larry Scammell; and two brothers, Frank and James
Scammell.
He is survived by two sons, Donald Ray and wife,
Kathy Scammell and Danny Gene and wife, Rosa Scammell, all
of Maxie; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services were held Friday, December 22 at Grundy
Funeral Home Chapel with Evgs. Raffael Farrow and Mike Trent
officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial
Park, Big Rock. Full military rites were conducted at the
cemetery by members of John Ratliff Post No. 164 of the
American Legion.
Active pallbearers were Scott Scammell, Chris
Scammell, David Scammell, David Church, Michael Hartford and
Anthony McClanahan.
Honorary pallbearers were Johnny McClanahan, Dr.
Nagaraja Vish, Dr. M.J. Thakkar, Terry Dotson and staff of
Heritage Hall Nursing Home.

Maude D. Owens
Mays, 91, of Vansant, died Saturday, December 23, 2006 in
Angel Haven Rest Home, Roanoke, following an extended
illness.
Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the
late Floyd Owens and Victoria Sutherland Edwards Owens,
formerly of Prater. She was a life-long resident of Buchanan
County and a member of Prater Creek Primitive Baptist
Church, Vansant. She was a graduate of Haysi High School and
was employed by the Buchanan County School System as a
teacher at War Fork Elementary School early in life and then
again as a Teacher's Assistant at Vansant Elementary School.
She was also previously employed with the former White Front
Cafe' in Grundy and Ralph's Shoe Store. She was a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death
by her husband, Clarence C. Mays, Sr., December 19, 1974;
nine sisters, Arminda Owens Colley, Celia Owens Childress,
Louisa Owens Childress, Nancy Jane Owens Colley, Hetty
Owens, Elzenia Owens McMurray, Fannie Owens, Bess Owens Hull
and Dorothy Owens Colley; eight brothers, Patton Owens,
James Owens, Charles Owens, John Owens, Evans Edwards,
Thurman Owens, William Owens and Stuart Owens.
She is survived by two sons, Dr. Clarence Condol
Mays, Jr. and wife, Lynn Morgan Mays of Roanoke and James E.
Mays and wife, Susan Paulette Norris Mays of Bristol, VA;
one sister, Obra Owens of Bristol, VA; six grandchildren,
Courtney Mays Tutwiler of Richmond, Todd Mays and wife,
Sherrie and Jenny Mays, all of Roanoke, Julia Golden of
Kingsport, TN, Johnathan Owens and wife, Jessica of Kelso,
WA and Jayma Mays of Los Angeles, CA; six
great-grandchildren.
Services were held Thursday, December 28 at Grundy
Funeral Home Chapel with Elders Aaron Williams, Chad
Crawford and Edgar Childress officiating. Burial followed in
the Owens Family Cemetery at Prater.
Active pallbearers were grandsons, nephews and
deacons at Prater Creek Primitive Baptist Church.
Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Clint Sutherland,
elders of Prater Creek Primitive Baptist Church,
grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Brian Keaster
Cox, 37, of the Dismal section of Oakwood, died Sunday,
December 24, 2006 at his home following an extended illness.
Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of Phyllis
Helen Stacy Cox of Oakwood and the late Arnold Edward Cox.
He was a former employee of Hunter Paving at Pounding Mill
and a graduate of the Garden High School class of 1987.
He is survived by two sisters, Kimberly Joann and
husband, Kennel Tackett, of Pittsboro, NC and Karen Janey
Cox of Lebanon; one brother, Bradley Keith and wife, Rhonda
Cox of Grundy; two nephews, Christopher Jason Cox of Oakwood
and Shawn Michael Looney of Grundy; several aunts, uncles
and cousins.
Services will be held Friday, December 29 at 1 p.m.
at the Rowe Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Ancil
Childress and Evg. Mike Rife officiating. Burial will follow
in the Vandyke Cemetery on Baldwin Mountain near Vansant.
Active pallbearers will be Albert Cook, Shawn Looney,
Jim Keen, Steve Keen, Michael Lester, Benji Burks, Johnny
Peck and Matthew Ratliff.
Honorary pallbearers will be family and friends.

Ada Counts
Fuller, 89, of Haysi, died Monday, December 25, 2006 at her
home.
Born in Dickenson County, she was a daughter of the
late Lot and Eura Deel Counts. She was a homemaker and
member of Bartlick Presbyterian Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death
by her husband, Noah "Caudle" Fuller; one sister,
Mary Mullins; brothers, Fred and Lot Joseph Counts; and two
grandsons.
She is survived by three daughters, Mavis (Earl)
Fields, Eurabell (Stoney) Fields, and Lois (Denny)
Sutherland, all of Haysi; four brothers, Kennithe Darrell
Fuller, Sr., Dannie (Andria) Fuller, Noah (Linda) Fuller and
Lonnie (Agnes) Fuller, all of Haysi; four sisters, Edna
Lyalls, Bonnie Mullins and Evelyn Wallace, all of Haysi and
Sally Mullins of Galion, OH; 31 grandchildren, 52
great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Services were held Thursday, December 28 at Haysi
Funeral Home with John Whitner officiating. Burial followed
in the Noah C. Fuller Cemetery at Bartlick.
Pallbearers were grandchildren.
Honorary pallbearers were sons-in-law.

June Coleman
Craft, 81, of Kilmarnock, died Wednesday, December 20,
2006.
She grew up in Buchanan County, the daughter of the
late Hiram Mahlon and Rose Dotson Coleman. She was a
graduate of Concord College in Athens, WV and was a high
school teacher.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in
death by one daughter, Barbara Craft.
She is survived by her husband, Willard Lee Craft;
one son, Ralph E. and wife, Eileen Craft, of Kilmarnock;
two sisters, Gloria R. Myers of Virginia Beach and Geneva
C. Young of Mechanicsville; two brothers, Ronald T. and
wife, Brenda Coleman, of Buchanan County and Herbert D.
and wife, Louise Coleman of Michigan; four grandchildren,
Bruce Craft, Becky Driscoll, Lisa Mitchell and Eddie
Craft; four great-grandchildren, several nephews and
nieces.
Services were held Saturday, December 23 at Currie
Funeral Home, Kilmarnock, with Pastor Jim Jackson
officiating. Interment followed in Woodlawn Cemetery,
Kilmarnock.
