Beverly Tiller Sworn In As New Circuit Court Clerk
Jim Bevins Announces Retirement

by Cathy St. Clair
News Editor
Beverly Tiller was sworn in last week as Buchanan Circuit Court Clerk effective January 1.
Tiller will replace Jim Bevins, who formally announced last week he would step down as clerk due to health reasons.
Tiller's appointment, made by Circuit Judge Bob Williams, will remain in effect until the general county election in November 2007, allowing Tiller to fill Bevins' unexpired term of office.
Tiller, who has been a deputy clerk and worked in the clerk's office for the past 21 years, has previously announced she will seek the Democrat nomination for clerk.
Bevins, in announcing his retirement last Thursday, also said he thought the court had made the right decision in naming Tiller as his replacement.
"Bev is definitely the best individual for the office due to her work experience of 21 years in the office, her ability and her work ethic," Bevins said. "She has been a valuable employee in my 15 years as clerk."
He continued, "Her dedication to the county is evident and she always keeps the needs of the citizens at heart."
Tiller said she was pleased to have been appointed to the post.
"I really hate to see Jim retire, but I feel blessed to have had so many years working with both Jim and before him, Russell Presley," Tiller said. "I've learned so much from both of them."
Tiller said she looks forward to continuing to serve the people of Buchanan County.
"I will try to continue to provide the same quality service both Jim and Russell Presley provided," Tiller said. "I've been here for 21 years and have been a deputy clerk for 17 of those years and having been here for that length of time, I have personally been involved in every aspect of the operation of the clerk's office."
Tiller is a graduate of Garden High School and holds an associates degree in secretarial science.
She is also a volunteer and coach of girls little league basketball and softball; serves on the board of directors for Buchanan County East Little League; is treasurer of the Buchanan County Girls Little League Association; and is a member of and attends Big Fox Community Church.
Tiller has been married to Gary Tiller for 16 years. Their two children, Samantha and Daniel, are 12 and 10, respectively. Both attend Riverview Elementary/Middle School.
  The family resides on Leemaster.

CTB Names Rt. 643 in Honor of Former Knox Supervisor Julius Hall
County Will Purchase Signs to Designate New Name

by Cathy St. Clair
News Editor
Rt. 643 will be named the "Julius Hall Memorial Roadway" due to action last week by the Commonwealth Transportation Board to approve the action.
The Buchanan County Board of Supervisors approved the request and forwarded it to the CTB in November.
The resolution asked for the roadway --  beginning at Rt. 83 on Slate Creek and ending at the Kentucky State Line --  to be named in honor of Hall, a former Knox District supervisor.
CTB member James Keen made the announcement of the CTB's approval for the naming of the road last week during a continued meeting of the Buchanan County Board of Supervisors.
Under the terms of the agreement, the county will supply the funding needed to purchase the initial signs to be placed along the roadway denoting its new name.
Linda Keen, Hall's daughter, and Bobby Hall, initially brought the request to the board in November.
Keen noted her father, who was born in 1910, was a devoted Christian and a family man. Hall died in 1993.
His first job was with Ritter Lumber Company at a very early age. He later began to work for the Big Sandy and Cumberland Railroad, where he helped to lay the first ties and rails for Norfolk and Western in the county. After 47 years of service -- at the age of 62 -- Hall retired.
Active in county politics for some 20 years, he first received the Republican party nomination in 1963. He was elected to the office of supervisor for the first time in 1964 and was elected to a total of five consecutive terms, serving the county for some 20 years.
During his tenure on the board, Hall worked on several projects including helping to secure sites and financing for Buchanan General Hospital, the Buchanan County Health Department, the Buchanan County Library, the Buchanan County Garage,
