A free throw by Kim Street with 1:18 remaining gave Twin Valley the lead for good and the Lady Panthers held off Buchanan County rival Grundy, 53-50, Monday night at Grundy High School.
The Lady Panthers, meanwhile, picked up an easy non-district win last week, with a 49-5 pasting of Pocahontas last Tuesday (Dec. 11) at Twin Valley High School.
After 11 lead changes, Twin Valley seized the lead for good at the end of the third quarter, but just barely, in defeating the Lady Wave Monday.
Street scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while freshman Katie Jo Lester also contributed a double-double with 13 points and 10 boards for the Lady Panthers, who used an 11-1 run to build a 43-35 lead early in the fourth quarter.
Grundy rallied to regain the lead, 50-48, on two free throws by freshman Holly Bowman with 1:50 remaining.
Lester hit two free throws to tie the score at 50-50 with 1:39 left before Street gave the Lady Panthers the lead. Grundy never scored again, while Sarah Mullins added two free throws for Twin Valley with 13 seconds remaining.
“We’ve got to learn to win,” Twin Valley coach Rick Goodman said. "We’ve got to learn to protect a lead, and, when we have one, not crank up the first three we get, or take it to the hole against three people.”
Kasey Bowman scored 15 points to lead Grundy. Holly Bowman and Ashley Riley each added eight points for the Lady Wave. Mullins and Sydney Gilbert each scored eight points for the Lady Panthers.
