Judy Carol Church
(Vansant)

    Judy Carol Osborne Church, 65, of Vansant, died Friday, December 14, 2007 in Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol, TN following an extended illness.
     Born in McDowell County, WV, she was a daughter of the late John Larkin and Cansada Duty Osborne. She had been a resident of Buchanan County several years, was of the Holiness faith and a homemaker.
     In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest C. Church, September 20, 2005, and eight sisters.
     She is survived by three daughters, Della Quinley, Teresa and husband, Rick Mullins, and Angela and husband, Bill Sykes, all of Vansant; four sons, Terry Church of Hurley, Ernie Church and Steve Church, both of Vansant and Jerry and wife, Teresa Church of Rural Retreat; one brother, Elmer Osborne of Vansant; nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild, several nieces and nephews.
     Services were held Tuesday, December 18 at the Cathedral of Praise Worship Center in Richlands with Dr. Danny Hess and the Rev. Bobby Stanley officiating. Burial followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill.
     Active pallbearers were sons, son-in-law and grandsons.
     Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Millard Wayne Dye
(Oakwood)

      Millard Wayne Dye, 60, of Oakwood, died Tuesday, December 11, 2007 in a Bristol, TN hospital.
      Born January 31, 1947 in Russell County, he was the son of the Rev. Edward Dye of Oakwood and the late Lizzie Melinda Miller Dye. A lifelong resident of the area, he was of the Freewill Baptist faith and a 1966 graduate of Garden High School. He was a disabled coal miner and had been employed by Jewell Ridge Coal Company.
      In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by one brother, Quinton Dye and one sister, Rose Marie Dye.
     In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife, Peggy Dye; one son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Becky Dye of Grundy; two granddaughters, Caitlyn Dye and Madyson Dye, both of Grundy; three brothers, Harold Dye and wife, Rita, of Oakwood, Bruce Dye and wife, Rose, of Patterson and Wade Dye and fiance, Pam, of Oakwood; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Charles and Dolly Bentley of Richlands; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
       Services were held Saturday in Honaker with the Revs. Sonny Perkins, Phillip Imel and Roy Smith officiating. Interment followed in the Wilson Cemetery at Drill.
       Pallbearers were Jackie Davis, Jeffrey Dye, Matthew Dye, Jonathan Bentley, Jared Deskins, Lewis Addison, Chuck Bentley and Harold Bentley.
       Honorary pallbearers were Marvin Street, Mike Whitt, Roy Smith, Kermit Stanley, Paul Keene, Clyde Hibbitts, Bill Houchins, Burl Miller, Allen Addison and Johnny Cunningham.


Goldie Hankins
(Big Rock)

     Goldie McCoy Hankins, 77, of Big Rock, died Friday, December 14, 2007 in Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol, TN, following an extended illness.
     Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late George Smallwood and Julie May Runyons McCoy. She was a life-long resident of Buchanan County and a member of the Big Rock Church of Christ. She was a former employee of Grundy Hospital and was a homemaker.
      In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James S. Hankins, May 27, 2006; one son, Junior Hankins; one sister, Alma Patterson; three brothers, Woodrow, James and Dee McCoy; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
      She is survived by one daughter, Rita, and husband, James Reynolds of Bristol, TN; two sons, Dewey Franklin Hankins and Robert Lee and wife, Welthie (Babe) Hankins, all of Big Rock; four sisters, Frankie and husband, Ray Gabbard and Hazel and husband, John Felix, all of Indiana, Lois and husband, Gary Hoggett of Ohio and Margaret and husband, John Riddle of Michigan; three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
     Services were held Wednesday, December 19 at Big Rock Church of Christ with Evg. Sam Casebolt officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
     Active pallbearers were family and friends.
     Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Richard Lee Coleman
(Leemaster)

     Richard Lee Coleman, 67, of the Leemaster section of Vansant, died at his home Wednesday, December 12, 2007 following an extended illness.
     Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Ferlie Marcus and Rosa Blankenship Coleman. He was a member of Big Prater Baptist Church and was a retired coal miner.
     In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Ritchie Coleman; one sister, Joan Tiller; and two brothers, Harold (Bear) and Josh Coleman.
      He is survived by his wife, Lorraine Stacy Coleman; one daughter, Kim, and husband, Eddie Lindsay, of Vansant; one son, Eric Coleman of Vansant;  eight sisters, Bernice Elswick of Grundy, Peggy, and husband, Kenneth Bayne Vandyke, of Vansant, Georgia Boyd of Baltimore, MD, Nola and husband, Bill Skeens of Abingdon, Sylvia and husband, Ronnie Frank, of Radford, Greathel Frank of Abingdon, Reginia and husband, Jeff Church, of Abingdon and Brenda Coleman of Pulaski; two brothers, James Coleman and Freddie and wife, Audrey Coleman, all of Vansant; and six grandchildren.
      Services were held Saturday, December 15 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Ministers Eddie Lindsay, Mike Rife and Larry Ratliff officiating. Burial followed in the Coleman Cemetery on Gent Branch at Leemaster near Vansant.
     Active pallbearers were Joe Howell, Roger Yates, Paul Yates, Ronnie Coleman, Jake Hagy, Ralph Rowe, Tim Elswick, David Elswick, Brian Elswick, Greg Clevinger, Kres Vandyke, Roger Coleman, Shawn Coleman, Keith Coleman and Gary Boyd.
      Honorary Pallbearers were Bayne Vandyke, Bill Skeens, Harold Tiller, Ronnie Frank, Tivis Deel, George Kinder, Eddie Tiller, Lonnie Boyd, Fonnie Boyd, Rex Tiller and Billman Elswick.

Pearl Cooper

(Whitewood)

      Pearl Wimmer Cooper, 98, of the Peapatch section of Whitewood, died Thursday, December 13, 2007 at her home following a brief illness.
      Born in McDowell County, she was the daughter of the late John Henry and Rindy Payne Wimmer. She had made her home in the Peapatch area all of her life and was a member of the Pilgrim Rest Primitive Baptist Church at Pea Patch. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
      In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Booker Cooper; four sons, Charlie, Mearl, Millard and Doil Cooper; six sisters, Elzena Cooper, Polly Church, Rebecca Breeding, Amanda Rife, Mamie Mitchell and Alice Underwood; three brothers, Jim, Bill and Herbert Wimmer; one granddaughter, Shirley Cooper Wimmer; and two infant grandchildren, Ernestine Lester and Christopher Cooper.
      She is survived by five daughters, Agnes Lester and husband, Bill, Yvonne Keen and husband, Charlie, and Patricia (Sue) Lawson and husband Arthur, all of Whitewood, Geraldine Reed and husband, Willard and Josephine Shelton and husband, Clarence, all of Jewell Ridge; one son, Glen Cooper and wife, Sheila, of Jewell Ridge; three daughters-in-law, Bertha Cooper of Whitewood, Anita Sue Cooper of Abingdon and Wanda Cooper of Jewell Ridge; 27 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
       Services were held Sunday, December 16 at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Elders Unis Davis and Aaron Williams officiating. Intement followed in the Cooper Family Cemetery at Peapatch.
       Pallbearers were grandsons.

Joe Carles Smith

(Grundy)

     Joe Carles Smith, 76, of Grundy, died Sunday, December 16, 2007 at Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy.
      Born September 27, 1931 in Wise County, he was the son of the late Robert Lee Smith and Blonnie Ringley Smith. He was a self-employed merchant and was in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict 1951-1952.
       He is survived by his wife, Truler B. Stacy Smith; three daughters, Jill Brown, Karen Hayslip and Joey Cochran; and one sister, Helen Ward.
       Services were held Tuesday, December 18 at Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel, Grundy, with the Revs. Ronnie Sliger, Eddie Wilson, Bobby Joe Ratliff and Josh Bowman officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
      Active pallbearers were family and friends.
      Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Leon Spahr

(Poplar Creek)

     Leon Stiltner Spahr, 81, of the Poplar Creek section of Grundy, died Tuesday, December 18, 2007 at Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy, following an extended illness.
     Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late David C. and Chloe Slone Stiltner. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a member of Emmanuel Old Regular Baptist Church. She was a homemaker.
     In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Gaynell Stiltner and Bonnie Stumbo; eight brothers, Amos, Hassell, Fred, Lawrence, Ralph, John, Leonard and Harman Stiltner; and one grandson, Robert Vincent Lane.
     She is survived by her husband, John Spahr; five daughters, Mrs. James (Sara) Stump and Mrs. Leon (Ruby) Elswick, of Grundy, Mrs. Tex (Liz) Lane of Maxie, Mrs. Roy (Gail) Humbert of Mavisdale and Mrs. Larry (Wanda) Lane of Vansant; one son, Buddy Sheets of Grundy; one step-daughter, Kathy Wertz of Hillsdale, MI; two step-sons, Kenny Bontrager of Pittsford, MI and Michael Spahr of Scotts Bluff, NE; five sisters, Mrs. David (Julie) Poland and Mrs. Vada (Alice) Yates, of Grundy, Rachel Clark of Clawson, MI, Mrs. Harley (Brenda) Crawford and Mrs. Jimmy (Lucy) Dudley, of Dickson, TN; one brother, Jack (Linda) Stiltner of Bon Aqua, TN; 10 grandchildren, 11 step-grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.
      Services will be held Friday, December 21 at 1 p.m. at Bethlehem Old Regular Baptist Church No. 1 with Elders Jim Blankenship, Billie Campbell, Frank Newsome, David O'Quinn, Toby Bailey, Harvey Creech and William McClanahan officiating. Burial will follow in the Frank E. Stiltner Cemetery on Poplar Creek Road.
       Services will be held at the church Wednesday and Thursday evenings at 7 p.m.
      Active pallbearers will be grandsons and grandsons-in-law.
      Honorary pallbearers will be Buddy Sheets, sons-in-law, Radford Rice, Stewart Stiltner, Steve Stiltner, Eddie Dean Colley, Jimmy Dudley, Harley Crawford, Vada Yates, David Poland and Derek Blankenship.

Charles Edgar Boyd

(Haysi, VA)

     Charles "Chuck" Edgar Boyd, 33, of Haysi, died Sunday, December 16, 2007.
     Born in Warren, MI, he was a son of George (Beth) Boyd of Clintwood and Rebecca (Danny) Deel of Grundy. He attended Council High School and was last employed as an electrician for Ramey Enterprises, Inc.
      He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Delphia and Jim Boyd.
      In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Deresa Boyd; two sons, David and Justin Boyd of the home; one step-daughter, Jennifer Hess of Council; maternal grandparents, Ben and Priscilla Vurst of Visewell, PA; one brother, Randy (Mary) Boyd of Birchleaf; one step-sister, Jessica Salyers of Haysi; one step-brother, Wesley (Jessica) Salyers of Haysi; nieces and nephews, Sam, Paul, Falynn, Reese and Isabelle, along with aunts, uncles and cousins.
     Services were held Tuesday, December 18 at Haysi Funeral Home with Don Sullivan officiating. A graveside service was held Wednesday, December 19 at the Boyd Cemetery at Rt. 1, Vansant.
     Pallbearers were Jeff Boyd, Blaine Deel, George Boyd, Randy Boyd, Chris Counts, Kevin Deel, Shane Church, Jimmy Garrett, Mark Thomas, Randy Gilbert and Gary Shawn Swiney.
     Haysi Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Clinton Swanson
(Oracle, AZ)

    Clinton Swanson, 86, of Oracle, AZ, died Monday, December 10, 2007 in Odyssey Hospice, Tucson, AZ, following an extended illness.
     Born in Hayesville, NC, he was a son of the late Charles and Mae Green Swanson. He was a resident of Miami, FL several years prior to retiring and relocating in Arizona. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and was of the Baptist faith. He was a retired supervisor with the City of Coral Gables, FL in the Sanitation Department.
      In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Clevinger Looney Swanson, May 28, 2000; and two sisters, Alma Russell and Hazel Roney.
     He is survived by one sister, Jessie Penland of Hayesville, NC; three nieces, Elaine Welch of Lexington, SC, Carolyn Turner of Brevard, NC and Gail Parks of Atlanta, GA; two nephews, James (Jimmy) Roney, Jr. of Mebane, NC and Charles Penland of Hayesville, NC; one step-son, Bobby Looney of Tucson; one step-daughter-in-law, Clara Looney of Oracle, AZ.
     Graveside services were held Friday, December 14 at Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, with Evg. Dennis Wimmer officiating with burial following.
     Active pallbearers were friends.

Rev. Roland Edward Rill
(North Tazewell, VA)

    Roland Edward Rill, 80, of North Tazewell, died Tuesday, December 11, 2007 in a Tazewell hospital.
    Born in Clearfield, MD, he was the son of the late Roland Franklin and V. Ethel Hughes Rill, both former Maryland natives. He was pastor of Newhall Bible Church for some 20 years.
     He is survived by his wife, Betty Harman Rill; four daughters, Kari L. Arave and husband, Larry, Phyllis E. Fleming and husband, Randy, Martha E. Rill and Debra L. Stacy and husband, Curtis; three brothers, George F. Rill, Mervin L. Rill and Paul D. Rill, all of Westminster, MD; grandchildren, Monica Blankenship and husband, Michael, Katrina Gregory and husband, Ricky and Eddie Stacy and wife, Dawn; great-grandchildren, Evan and Tannith Blankenship, Neil and Rosalyn Gregory and Elizabeth Stacy; special niece, Patricia A. May, along with additional nieces and nephews.
    Services were held Friday, December 14 at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Tazewell with Pastors Carl Howell and John Webb and Retired Pastor Henry Spence officiating. Interment followed at Forest Hills Memory Gardens in Abingdon.
     Pallbearers were Eddie Stacy, Michael Blankenship, Rick Gregory II, Jerry Mitchell, Jerry Stevenson and Earl Muncy.

Mona Pearl Osborne
(Richlands, VA)

    Mona Pearl Short Osborne, 60, of Richlands, formerly of Buchanan County, died Tuesday, December 11, 2007 at Clinch Valley Medical Center following an extended illness.
     Born January 20, 1947, in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late John Alden Short and Lovis Reva (Horn) Short. She was employed for the past 28 years by Ed and Lynn Bunn of Grundy.
     In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Roger Short; one brother-in-law, Roger Osborne; and one special uncle, June Mitchell.
    She is survived by her husband, Melvin Osborne, Jr.; one daughter, Shelia Rasnake and husband, John, of Raven; one grandson, Shane Rasnake; one step-granddaughter, Kayla Rasnake, of Wardell; four brothers, the Rev. Dannie D. Short and wife, Inis Mae, of Claypool Hill, Louis Short and wife, Carol, of Raven, James Jr. Short and wife, Fay, of Doran and Johnny Short of Richlands; three sisters, Ellen Horn and husband, Grady, of Raven, Ruby Osborne of Oakwood and Marie Smith and husband, Melvin, of Richlands; former sister-in-law, Peggy Short of Red Ash; special aunt, Vernie Mitchell of Jewell Ridge; special nephew, Paul Short and wife, Brenda, of Doran.
    Services were held Friday, December 14 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel at Cedar Bluff with the Rev. Jeff Porter officiating. Burial followed in the Osborne Family Cemetery on Osborne Mountain.
     Pallbearers were Junior Short, the Rev. Dannie D. Short, Chris Short, Bob Ball, Ray Horn, Billy Clifton, Jason Davidson and Andy Bunn.
     Honorary pallbearers were Shane Rasnake, Ed Bunn, Dr. Clint Sutherland, Dr. Brian Cortellisi, Dr. William Hunter, Dr. Robert Cahoon, Dr. Pillai, Dr. Robert Weinacker and the staff of Clinch Valley Medical Center.
     Singleton Funeral Services was in charge of arrangements.


Lockie Maxine Lipsey
(Decatur, GA)

     Lockie Maxine Childress Lipsey, 76, of Decatur, GA, died Wednesday, December 12, 2007.
     She grew up in Breaks as part of a large family. She married H.A. Lipsey, Jr. of Lambert, MS in September 1954 and their son, Hal, was born in the spring of 1956. She was a teacher and a member of Decatur First United Methodist Church.
      She is survived by one son, Hal Lipsey; one daughter-in-law, the Rev. Ellynda Price Lipsey; one granddaughter, Laura Telaku Lipsey; one sister, Rushia Banks of Bristol, VA; one sister, Ruth Ann Elswick of Richmond; two brothers, James Childress and Sammy Childress of Breaks; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
      A graveside service was held at Breaks on Saturday, December 15.
      Additional expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of donations to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
     A memorial service will be held at a later date, A.S. Turner & Sons.

Macarthur McCoy
(Wirtz, VA)

     Macarthur "Mac" McCoy, 65, of Wirtz, died Saturday, December 15, 2007 at a Rocky Mount, Virginia hospital.
      Born June 4, 1942 in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Ben Harrison and Evelyn Nichols McCoy. He was retired from Stanleytown Furniture Company with 18 years of service and was a former coal miner.
     In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Frances "Drew" McCoy, and one son, Tony McCoy.
     He is survived by three daughters, Shelby Ann Cline, Darlene Justus and Patricia Matney, all of Hurley; two sisters, Sarah Ellen Mitchell of Grundy and Phoebe Craddock of Bassett; one brother, Wilbert McCoy and wife, Helen, of Wirtz; one half-brother, Bill Roy Nichols of Hurley; one step-son, Mark Anthony Adkins and wife, Sherry, of Wirtz; 11 grandchildren, Vanessa and Chris Perdue, Michelle and Nathan Anderson, Jake Justus, David Cline, Angie, Buck, Jessie, Jessie Ann Little and T.J. Little; great-grandson, Owen; and nieces and nephews, Kaitlynn McCoy, Mike and Michelle Ingram and Josh and Samantha McCoy.
     Services will be held Friday, December 21 at 1 p.m. at Little Dove Old Regular Baptist Church with Elders Danny Hurley, Zeb Justice, John R. Justice and David Lester officiating. Burial will follow in the Brooks-McCoy Family Cemetery at Hurley.
      Services will be held Wednesday and Thursday evenings at the church at 7 p.m.
      Pallbearers will be family and friends.
      Virginia Funeral Home of Grundy is in charge of arrangements.


Donald R. Hutchinson
(Granville, OH)

      Donald R. Hutchinson, 68, of Granville, OH, formerly of Buchanan County, died Sunday, December 16, 2007 at Mt. Carmel East Hospital following a brief illness.
      He was an active member of Tri-Village Christian Church for 36 years where he served as an elder, Sunday School teacher and youth leader at various times. He retired from Lucent Technologies in 1996 where he was a member of IBEW 2020. He moved to the Granville, OH area some 47 years ago, relocating from Grundy.
      Born May 19, 1939, he was the son of the late William and Delphia (Taylor) Hutchinson.
     In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Laura (Hackney) Taylor and his paternal grandparents, Edgar and Effie Hutchinson.
      He is survived by his wife, Joan (Epling) Hutchinson; one daughter, Sherry (James) Newman; one grandson, Jared Newman; one granddaughter, Samantha Newman; one brother, Danny R. Hutchinson; several uncles, one aunt, nieces and nephews.
      Services will be held Friday, December 21 at Tri-Village Christian Church in Pataskala with Paul Snoddy officiating. Burial will follow in Pataskala Cemetery.
     Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of contributions to Tri-Village Christian Church Building Fund.
