Zada Louisa Breeding
(Hurricane Creek)

  Zada Louisa Ray Breeding, 69, of the Hurricane Creek section of Route 1, Vansant, died Monday, November 27, 2006 in a Kingsport, TN hospital.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Martha Barton Ray. A lifelong resident of Buchanan County, she attended the Bee Pentecostal Church.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Elene Phillips.
  She is survived by her husband, Keithel Breeding; two daughters, Anita Ratliff and husband, Greg, of Richlands and Rebecca Breeding of Vansant; one son, Michael Breeding and wife, Melanie, of Vansant; one sister, Lorene Rasnake of Vansant; three brothers, Lester Ray of Vansant, Sonny Ray of Fredricksburg, and Darrell Ray of Lebanon;  four grandchildren, Stacy Presley and  wife, Lisa, Shane David Presley, Ashley Nicole Ratliff, and Calab Michael Breeding; several nieces and nephews.
  Services will be held today (Thursday), November 30, in  Honaker with the Rev. Carl Burmeier officiating. Entombment will follow in Ketron Memorial Gardens, Lebanon.
  Pallbearers will be Rannie Breeding, Dave Dye, Larry Tiller, Tivis Boyd, Jr., Russell Ray, and Eric Wampler.
  Honorary pallbearers will be friends and relatives.


Tolbert Combs, Jr.
(Council)

  Tolbert Combs, Jr., 73, of Council, died Saturday, November 4, 2006 in a Lebanon hospital.
  Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Tolbert Combs, Sr. and Carmie Harris Combs. He had lived his early life in this area, moving to Baltimore, MD before returning again to this area in 1983. He was a retired mechanic with Continental Can Company and was a member of the Tiller Town Freewill Baptist Church.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Dolly Blankenship and Rita Combs, and three brothers, Herbert Combs, Billy Combs and Ernest Combs.
  He is survived by his wife, Venella Combs; one daughter, Kathey Good of Baltimore; one step-daughter, Sandra Mathena of Honaker; one step-son, Ricky Edward Fletcher of Council; two sisters, Geneva McGlothlin of Honaker and Betty Hess of Council; three brothers, Charlie Combs of Council, Randall Combs of Rt. 1, Vansant and Paul Combs of Bluff City, TN; three step-grandchildren, Jeremy Scott Mathena, Otto Fletcher II and Tabitha Marie Fletcher; several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Tuesday, November 7 in Honaker with the Rev. Kyle Ratliff officiating. Entombment followed in Ketron Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Lebanon.
  Pallbearers were Paul Combs, Randall Combs, Charlie Combs, James Penley, Chester Penley and Jeremy Mathena.
  Honorary pallbearers were Junior Lester, Robert Combs, Landon Combs, Stephen Combs, Jerry Mathena, Mark Stevens, Tracy Tiller, Matthew Combs, Mark Combs, Heath Hess, Shawn Hess and Terry Penley.


William Lee Phillips
(Clifton Fork)

  William Lee (Bucky) Phillips, 62, of the Clifton Fork section of Buchanan County, died Friday, November 24, 2006 at his home following an extended illness.
  Born in Melfa, he was the son of the late Edward Lee and Myrtle Alice Phillips.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant sister, and a grandson, Phillip Diaz. He had worked for many years at Kelsey Tire Company in Richlands and Grundy and had owned and operated Tri-County Tire and Recapping at Shortt's Gap.
  He is survived by his wife, Janet Lester Phillips; three daughters, Jill Lester and husband, Aron, of Oakwood; Ann Diaz and husband, David, of Garland, TX and Jennifer Smith of Charlotte, NC; one son, William Lee "Jack" Phillips, Jr. and wife, Rita, of Patterson; six grandchildren, Andrew Diaz, Zachary Phillips, Courtney Phillips, Audrey Kirchner, Ben Kirchner and Chris Kirchner.
  Services were held Tuesday, November 28 at Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel, Keen Mountain, with the Rev. Luther Bowman and Brother Eddie Street officiating. Burial followed in the Esaw Rife Cemetery at Keen Mountain.
  Pallbearers were family and friends.
  Honorary pallbearers were Ronnie Compton, Betty Compton and staff of Virginia Medical and Respiratory Equipment.
  Buchanan Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Cathern Madeline Keen
(Raven, VA)

  Cathern Madeline Hurt Keen, 68, of Raven, died Sunday, November 26, 2006 in Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy, following an extended illness.
  Born in Tazewell County, she was the daughter of the late Floyd and Gracie Davis Hurt. She was a lifelong resident of Tazewell and Buchanan counties and attended Gloryland Tabernacle. She was a homemaker.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Dennis Keen, and two brothers, Roy and Floyd Hurt, Jr.
  She is survived by her husband, Estel Lee Keen; three daughters, Helen and husband, Michael Childress of Mavisdale, Sandra Boyd of Harrisonburg and Shanteau and husband, William Marshall of Bristol, VA; three sons, Estel Lee Jr. and wife, Tammy Keen, of Whitewood, Eddie Albert Keen and Steven Chris Keen, both of Raven; six sisters, Mary Henderson and Carol Hurt, both of Mouthcard, KY, Gay White of Clarksville, TN, Sylvia Viola Clifton and Geneva Mitchell, both of Raven, and Dolly Austin of Richlands; two brothers, Clayton Hurt of Paintlick and Fred Hurt of Raven; five grandchildren.
  Services were held Wednesday, November 29, at Gloryland Tabernacle near Shortts Gap with the Revs. Don Smith and Randy Webb officiating. Burial followed in the Keen Cemetery at Marvin.
  Active pallbearers were family and friends.
  Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Allie Marie Lomax
(Catlett, VA)

  Allie Marie Lomax, 78, of Catlett, former resident of Buchanan County, died Tuesday, November 21, 2006 at her home.
  Born in Wilkinson, WV, she was the daughter of the late James Harrison Caperton and Hasie Trent Caperton. She was a retired cashier at Vint Hill Farms Station Commissary and a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Midland.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Wayne Ratliff, and a brother, Wallace Jarrell Caperton.
  She is survived by her husband, Clyde Lomax; one daughter, Sandra Ratliff Kasney of Virginia Beach; two sons, Larry James Ratliff of Manassas and Keith Arms of Catlett; three step-children, Cynthia Marie Betterly of Bristow, Karen Lynn Warnecki of Gainesville, VA and Thomas Clyde Lomax of Nokesville; one sister, Agnes June Hood of Little Rock, AR; 10 grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Saturday, November 25 at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church near Morrisville. Interment followed in Catlett Cemetery.
  Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, 12714 Elk Run Road, Midland, VA 22728 or to Catlett Vol. Fire and Rescue Company, P.O. Box 174, Catlett, VA 20119.

Elizabeth Owens
(Bristol, VA)

  Elizabeth Owens, 74, of Maywood Loop, died Saturday, November 25, 2006 at Bristol Regional Medical Center.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Carson and Ida Mae Owens. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two infant children, Barbara and Ronnie Owens.
  She is survived by seven children, Donnie (Marlena) Owens of Grundy, Dixie Reynolds of Kingsport, TN, Sandy Owens (Dean Duty) of Hansonville, Lora (Clinton) Looney of Ashville, NC, Ida Mae (Rickie) Yates of Bristol, TN, Devie (Crystal) Owens of Kingsport and Rickie (Regina) Owens of Jonesborough, TN; three sisters, Inez Owens and Maggie Owens, both of Vansant and Reba Owens of Vansant; 16 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Tuesday, November 28 at Haysi Funeral Home with Elders Elmer Brown, Garnell Gilbert and Price Viers officiating. Burial followed in the Owens Family Cemetery at Vansant.
  Pallbearers were grandsons and friends.
  Haysi Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Kermit Clyde Stiltner
(North Port, FL)

  Kermit Clyde Stiltner, 73, of North Port, FL, formerly of Grundy, died Tuesday, November 21, 2006 at his home following an extended illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Coy and Estus Faye Clevinger Stiltner, both Buchanan County natives. He was a resident of the Harman area most of his life and was of the Baptist faith. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was a retired survey engineer for Harman Mining Corporation.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife: Lillian Marie Sproles Stiltner; one son, Kerry Douglas Stiltner, and two brothers, Jerry Allen Stiltner and Coy Stiltner, Jr.
  He is survived by one daughter, Sherry Lynn Stiltner, and husband, Bobby Fletcher, of North Port; two sisters, Shirley Faye and husband, Andrew Bevill, of Clearwater, FL and Charlotte and husband, Ronald Chambers, of Maxie; one brother, Robert Douglas and wife, Glenda Stiltner, of Pounding Mill; two grandsons, Shannon Fletcher of North Port and Nathan Fletcher of Paola, KS; and three great-grandchildren.
  Memorial services will be held Friday, December 1 at 6 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Howard Daniels officiating.
  Honorary pallbearers will be nephews: Kenneth Chambers, Dwayne Chambers, Chris Stiltner, Stuart Bevill and Jason Stiltner.
  The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be made in the form of donations to Tidewell Hospice, 1144 Veronica St., Port Charlotte, FL 33952.
  Grundy Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Carnell Amos
(Meadowview, VA)

  Carnell Amos, 59, of Meadowview, formerly of Dickenson County, died Saturday, November 25, 2006 at Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon.
  Born in Dickenson County, she was a daughter of the late Clyde and Ida Musick Amos.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Clyde Jr. Amos, Arnold Amos and Clovis Amos.
  She is survived by two brothers, Dallas (Linda) Amos of Haysi and Guy (Shelby) Amos of Village; three sisters, Pauline Lockhart of Clintwood, Dollie Matney of Claypool Hill and Fannie Perry of Tennessee; one sister-in-law, Jean Amos; several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Tuesday, November 28 at Haysi Funeral Home with Darrell Milgrim officiating. Burial followed in the Musick-Amos Cemetery on Davis Ridge.
  Pallbearers were family and friends.
