HAYSI SENIOR tailback Chad Barton (#7) is wrapped up from behind after a short gain through a hole in the Greenwave defense late in Saturday's Region D, Division 2 playoff game at Sandlick. Barton carried the ball 11 times for 68 yards for the Tigers, but is wasn't enough as Clintwood held on at the end to advance to Saturday's Region D finale at UVa-Wise.

Clintwood Pulls Off 17-16 Upset at Haysi In Region D Playoffs

by Lloyd Combs
Sports Reporter

A single play here, a missed tackle or block there, could have made a difference.
One different twist or turn elsewhere and it wouldn’t have come down to one point for Haysi.
Clintwood upset Dickenson County rival Haysi, 17-16, in the Region D, Division 2 semifinals Saturday afternoon at Sandlick Elementary School.
The victory gave Clintwood (7-4) its first berth in the Region D finals since 1999, when the Cleveland Browns’ Justin Hamilton led the Greenwave against the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Heath Miller and Honaker.
Clintwood, which faces LPD rival Powell Valley Saturday at UVA-Wise, avenged an early season loss to the Tigers on the same field by winning a defensive struggle.
Haysi had to play catch-up in both halves, falling behind for good when Clintwood sophomore Chris Robinson returned the second half kickoff 78 yards for a touchdown.
It was one of the few big plays in the game. The Greenwave had just 144 yards of total offense. Haysi got 185 of its 267 yards in the first half
"We stepped up defensively in the second half," Clintwood coach Rick Mullins said. "The first time we came down here they knocked us around a little bit.
But we’ve grown up a little bit since (then). I’m just glad we got a couple of breaks there in the second half and we took advantage of them.

Honaker's Mullins, Compton Earn Top Honors on All-BDD Volleyball Squad

Honaker swept the BDD and earned most of its major awards for the 2006 volleyball season.
Honaker senior Billee Jo Mullins was named Black Diamond District Player of the Year. Kim Compton was named BDD Coach of the Year after leading the Lady Tigers to a 10-0 league mark that included the regular season and tournament championships.
Two other seniors were also honored. Honaker’s Lyndsey Newberry was named BDD Setter of the Year and Haysi’s Keisha Bartley was named BDD Hitter of the Year.
Haysi and Honaker each placed four players on the 12-player All-BDD First Team. Haysi placed Jada Edwards, Holly Hyden and Millette Mullins, while Honaker placed Paige Tiller and Samantha Farmer on the first unit.
Rounding out the first team are Katherine White and Courtney Hagerman of Twin Valley, Sarah Justus of Hurley and Stephanie Cornett of Council.
Nine players received honorable mention all-district in voting by BDD coaches: Council’s Kara Fuller, Allison Presley and Katie Thomas; Haysi’s Candace Sutherland and Rebecca Roberts; Honaker’s Kala McGlothlin; Hurley’s Celisha Allen and Tara Hall, and Twin Valley’s Carrie Mounts.
