A
single play here, a missed tackle or block there,
could have made a difference.
One different twist or turn elsewhere and it wouldn’t
have come down to one point for Haysi.
Clintwood upset Dickenson County rival Haysi, 17-16,
in the Region D, Division 2 semifinals Saturday
afternoon at Sandlick Elementary School.
The victory gave Clintwood (7-4) its first berth in
the Region D finals since 1999, when the Cleveland
Browns’ Justin Hamilton led the Greenwave against the
Pittsburgh Steelers’ Heath Miller and Honaker.
Clintwood, which faces LPD rival Powell Valley
Saturday at UVA-Wise, avenged an early season loss to
the Tigers on the same field by winning a defensive
struggle.
Haysi had to play catch-up in both halves, falling
behind for good when Clintwood sophomore Chris
Robinson returned the second half kickoff 78 yards for
a touchdown.
It was one of the few big plays in the game. The
Greenwave had just 144 yards of total offense. Haysi
got 185 of its 267 yards in the first half
"We stepped up defensively in the second half,"
Clintwood coach Rick Mullins said. "The first time we
came down here they knocked us around a little bit.
But we’ve grown up a little bit since (then). I’m just
glad we got a couple of breaks there in the second
half and we took advantage of them.
