Joan Buchanan

Joan Raines
Buchanan, 80, of Grundy, died Sunday, November 19, 2006 at
Colonial Hills Nursing Center in Maryville, TN following an
extended illness.
Born
in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late William
P. and Virgie Hurley Raines. She was a lifelong resident of
Buchanan County, a member of the Grundy Church of Christ and
was a retired office manager.
In
addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two
brothers, S.M. (Sonny) Raines and W.P. Raines, Jr.
She
is survived by her former husband, Jack Buchanan, of Grundy;
one daughter, Alice Jo Peery of North Carolina; two sons,
Jim and wife, Christy Buchanan of Knoxville, TN and Jack
Buchanan of New Tazewell, TN; two sisters, Mary Lynn Neeley
of Grundy and Pauline Kennedy of Carlisle, PA; five
grandchildren, Brooke Gaines, Season Newberry, Samuel Peery,
Andrew Peery and Caroline Buchanan.
Services
were held Wednesday, November 22 at Grundy Funeral Home
Chapel with Evg. Bill Neeley officiating. Entombment
followed in Mountain Rest Mausoleum at Mountain Valley
Memorial Park, Big Rock.
Active
pallbearers were Eddie Skeens, Sam Neeley, Craig Plymal,
Billy Raines, David Fletcher, Scotty McCoy, Dana Reynolds
and Randal McNew.

Paul Dotson Sr.
(Big Rock)
Jerry Paul
Dotson, Sr., 56, of Big Rock, died Thursday, November 16,
2006 in Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport, TN.
Born
in Buchanan County, he was the son of Artha Helen Slone
Lester of Hurley and the late Frank Dotson. He was an avid
hunter and fisherman.
In
addition to his father, he was preceded in death by three
brothers.
In
addition to his mother, he is survived by two daughters,
Makesha H. Dotson Lilly and husband, Jeremy, of Mount
Lookout, WV and Melissa H. Dotson Smith and husband, Phillip
James, of Salisbury, NC; one son, Jerry Paul Dotson, Jr. and
wife, Joanie Ellen of Salisbury; one sister, Shirley Fischel
of Mississippi; two brothers, Billy Joe Dotson of Hurley and
Jimmy Dotson of Grundy; one step-brother, Marty Allen Lester
of Hurley; five grandchildren, Madeline Faith Lilly, Ryder
Chase Lilly, Ayden James Smith, Andrew Trey Smith and Jacob
Canden Dotson.
Services
were held Sunday, November 19 at Shortridge-Ramey Funeral
Home Chapel, Grundy, with Minister James Lilly officiating.
Burial followed in the Dotson Family Cemetery on Hunts Fork,
Hurley.

Opal Compton
(Grundy)
Edna Opal Compton, 88, of Grundy, died Tuesday, November 14,
2006 in Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy, following an
extended illness.
Born
in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Dallas
Compton and Peggy Stacy Compton Farrow. She was a lifelong
resident of Buchanan County and a member of Haysi Church of
Christ.
In
addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two
brothers, Marshall Compton and Russell Compton; and four
sisters, Hazel Stacy, Bessie Stiltner, Brookie Compton and
Lillie Sizemore.
She
is survived by one son, Earl J. and wife, Charlotte Compton,
of Grundy; one brother, J.W. and wife, Dolly Compton, of
Bristol, VA; two grandsons, Matthew Ryan Compton and David
Christopher Compton, both of Grundy.
Services
were held Friday, November 17 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel
with Evgs. Jim Viers, Michael Trent and Hobert Kennedy
officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial
Park, Big Rock.
Active
pallbearers were Mickey Tiller, Jonathan Tiller, Jimmy Viers,
Troy Compton, Troy Compton, Jr., Tony Stiltner, J.R.
Stiltner, Tim Herring, Willard Woods and Keith Stiltner.

Blankenship
(Grundy)
Gracie Davis Blankenship, 88, of Rt. 3, Grundy, died
Tuesday, November 14, 2006 at Buchanan General Hospital,
Grundy, following an extended illness.
Born
in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Garfield
and Nancy Reed Davis. She was a lifelong resident of
Buchanan County and was of the Baptist faith. She was a
homemaker and was the last surviving member of her immediate
family.
In
addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her
husband, Morgan Blankenship, February 27, 1986; two
daughters, Lorraine Collins and Geraldine Lester; two
sisters, Lula Justus and Mazie Blankenship; one brother,
Frank Davis; and two grandchildren.
She
is survived by three daughters, Lois and husband, Bobby
Griffey of Roseann, and Betty and husband, Jack Belcher and
Joyce Justus and fiance, Buck Swiney, all of Hurley; two
sons, Jerry and wife, Juanita Blankenship and Freddie
Blankenship and fiance, Wanda, all of Hurley; 17
grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, three
great-great-grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, two
step-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Services
were held Friday, November 17 at North Springs Old Regular
Baptist Church with Elders Josh Justus, Jr., Bill McCoy,
James Stacy, Gary Justus and others officiating. Burial
followed in the Conley Blankenship Cemetery on Straight Fork
near Hurley.
Flower
bearers were granddaughters.

E. Fleming
(Haysi, VA)
Rocky E. Fleming, 30, of Little Lick, died Saturday,
November 18, 2006.
Born
in Wise, he was a son of Edward Fleming of Haysi and Vivian
Louise Rose Fleming of Abingdon. He was last employed as a
logger.
In
addition to his father and mother, he is survived by two
brothers, Eddie (Jennifer) Fleming of Louisburg, NC and
Benjamin Fleming of Abingdon; one nephew, several aunts,
uncles and cousins.
Services
were held Wednesday, November 22 at Bartlick Old Regular
Baptist Church with Elders Ralph Mullins and Aven Viers
officiating. Burial followed in the Mitchell-Senter Cemetery
at Bartlick.
Pallbearers
were family and friends.
The

of donations to the funeral expenses.

Baldwin Barrett
(Telford, TN)
Mildred Baldwin Barrett, 68, of Telford, TN, formerly of
Buchanan County, died Tuesday, November 14, 2006 at
Johnson City Medical Center, Johnson City, TN following a
brief illness.
Born
in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Paris
and Laura Myrtle Boyd Baldwin. She had been a resident of
Buchanan County several years prior to moving to Tennessee
and was a member of Big Fox Community Church. She was a
homemaker.
In
addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one
son, Guy Mitchell Sturgeon, and two brothers, Ralph and
Jerry Baldwin.
She
is survived by her husband, Roy R. Barrett; two daughters,
Rita and husband, Tom Bell, of Wichita, KS and Lara and
husband, Paul Witt, of Limestone, TN; two sons, Lewis
Michael Sturgeon and Paris Marlow Sturgeon, both of
Michigan; one brother, James Billy and wife, Linda
Baldwin, of Royal Oak, MI; 10 grandchildren and eight
great-grandchildren.
Services
were held Saturday, November 18 at Big Fox Community
Church with Ministers Lester Boyd, Don Ashby and Edward
Tiller officiating. Burial followed in the Anderson
Cemetery on Leemaster near Vansant.

Arthur Deel
(Green Cove Springs, FL)
James Arthur Deel, 84, of Green Cove Springs, FL, formerly
of Haysi, died Tuesday, November 14, 2006 at Orange Park
Medical Center in Florida.
Born
in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late John Willie
and Mary Frances Deel. He was a retired coal miner, having
worked at Harman Mining Co. for 32 years and was a member
of UMWA 7170. He was a member of the Paw Paw Old Regular
Baptist Church and attended Little Ruth Church while
living in Florida.
In
addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by
siblings, Pricey Jane "Janie" Deel, Katherine
Church, Rebecca Stuart, Sidney Looney, Oliver Deel and
Dorsey Deel and grandchildren, Marianne and Lora Lee Deel.
He
is survived by his wife, Alice Looney Deel; three sons,
James Olin (Scema) Deel and Billy Ralph (Jo Anne) Deel,
both of Haysi and Verner Ray (Sandra) Deel of Prater; two
brothers, Garland Henry (Edna) Deel of Green Cove Springs
and Willie Kermit (Betty) Deel of Bristol, VA; four
sisters, Martha Emojean Deel of Deskins, Sara Arlene Dixon
and Bessie Caroline Prior, both of Green Cove Springs and
Flornie Rosalene Deel of Somerset, KY; five grandchildren,
John, Vanessa, Billy, Nathan, Vernon and Diana; four
great-grandchildren.
Services
were held Saturday, November 18 at Russell Prater Old
Regular Baptist Church with Elders Lloyd
"Popeye" Brown, Danny Belcher, Roger Coleman and
Willis Bartley officiating. Burial followed in the Parrot
Deel Cemetery at Haysi.
Pallbearers
were grandsons, John Deel, Nathan Deel, Vernon Deel,
Scotty Ball and Jeffrey French.

Barbara Sue Sullivan
(Austinville)
Barbara Sue Sullivan, 53, of Austinville, died Saturday,
November 18, 2006.
Born
in Grundy, she was preceded in death by her mother, Johnna
Elizabeth Viars and two sisters, Connie Jean Sullivan and
Ann Simmons.
She
is survived by one daughter, Jaimelyn Sullivan; two
brothers, Johnny and wife, Teri Sullivan of Max Meadows
and Billy Wayne and wife, Janet Viars of Atkins; three
sisters, Peggy Jo Sullivan of Austinville, Mona Lisa
Sullivan of Pulaski and Mechelle Lea and Brian Osborne of
Wytheville; her step-father, Olan Wayne Viars of
Austinville; seven nieces and four nephews.
The
family will receive friends and hold an Irish wake at the
Clinic in Wytheville on Friday, November 24 from 7 to 9
p.m.
In
lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to
the American Kidney Association.
Upon
her request, her body was cremated.
