Successful
Hunters
Continue
to Feed
Virginia's
Hungry
Through
Harvests
|
|
|
|
Through
the archery season, successful
hunters across the state have
shared with those in need. Hunters
for the Hungry has been receiving
donations of deer and providing
the venison to the hungry of the
Commonwealth. Including donations
of deer from damage permit
harvests, over 80,000 pounds of
meat have been provided so far
this year.
The
muzzleloading and general firearms
season will provide even more deer
for those less fortunate among us.
The Hunters for the Hungry program
is hopeful of receiving,
processing and distributing
350,000 pounds of venison during
the 2006 season. This is enough
meat to provide 1.4 million
servings to hungry children, the
elderly, the homeless and families
in crisis across Virginia.
The operation of the
program is a common sense approach
to the utilization of natural
resources to battle the hunger
problem. Hunters are encouraged to
donate deer that are surplus to
their own needs. Funds are raised
to cover the costs of professional
processing. The meat is
distributed in the areas where it
is harvested through foodbanks,
soup kitchens, churches and other
local charities providing for
those in need. Hunters for the
Hungry has proven to be a win-win
program that has distributed over
2.6 million pounds of venison
since its inception in 1991.
As a 501 (c) (3)
corporation, all financial
contributions are tax deductible
to the full extent of the law.
This year, as in the past,
financial support is critical to
the success of this effort. The
Hunters for the Hungry charity
receives no government support and
is dependent upon the
contributions of individuals,
civic clubs, churches, businesses
and corporations.
