Haysi Explodes
Late to Capture Win Over Wave
Tigers Earn Top Seed in
Region D, Division 2 Playoffs with 29-12 Win |
|
by Lloyd Combs
Sports Reporter
For three
quarters, Grundy looked like some of the
eight playoff squads on its schedule.
But the fourth quarter belonged to one of those eight
teams.
Haysi earned the top seed in the Region D, Division 2
playoffs with a 29-12 win over the Golden Wave in
non-district action Friday night at Sandlick
Elementary School.
It was the season finale for Grundy (1-9). It was a
playoff tune-up for Haysi (9-1), which will host
Dickenson County rival Clintwood Saturday.
The Tigers pulled away in the fourth quarter against
Grundy. Lance Compton’s second touchdown pass to
Nathan Boyd, two field goals by Allen Owens and a
safety gave Haysi 15 unanswered points after Grundy
pulled to within 14-12 late in the third quarter.
"We stepped it up in the fourth quarter," Compton
said. "We knew we needed to win this game and take a
little momentum into the playoffs." For more of the story, see the print

Ervinton Trip Panthers In
Non-District, 38-22 |
|
by Mike Stiltner
Sports Reporter
Adam Kiser ran for
three touchdowns and 157 yards as
Ervinton defeated the Twin Valley Panthers Friday
night at Twin Valley Elementary-Middle School.
The tandem of Kiser, Larry Phillips and Anthony
Honaker combined for four touchdowns and 334 of
Ervinton's 364 rushing yards.
Kiser had touchdown runs of 32, 14, and five yards
and
finished with 157 yards on the ground. Phillips added
80 yards, including a huge 60-yard blast for a
touchdown and Honaker added 97 yards on nine carries.
"We had three goals coming into the
season." said
Ervinton coach Chris Crabtree. " We wanted to win
district title, get into the playoffs and either tie
or break school record for wins in a season and we
accomplished all three."
Ervinton’s first scoring drive took just two plays
and
started at the Twin Valley 42-yard line.
