Young
Lady
Rebels
Squad
Looking
for
Consistency
to Be
Competitive
in BDD |
|
by Lloyd Combs
Sports
Reporter
Consistency,
says
Hurley
volleyball
coach
Brian
Davis,
is
all
that
stands
between
a
young
Lady
Rebel
squad
and
being
competitive
in
the
Black
Diamond
District.
All
six
starters
return
and
three
promising
players
moved
up
this
year
from
the
junior
varsity
at
Hurley.
In
addition,
the
Lady
Rebels
have
just
two
seniors
to
go
with
three
sophomores
and
four
juniors.
The
returnees
include
setter
Sarah
Justus
and
one
other
senior,
Amanda
Baker.
Also
back
is
junior
Patricia
Citarelli
and
three
sophomores,
Tara
Hall,
Celisha
Allen
and
Natasha
Justus.
The
future
looks
fine,
but
Davis
still
has
hopes
that
his
still
relatively
young
and
inexperienced
squad
will
improve
significantly
this
season.
“We
started
off
good,”
Davis
said.
“We
played
well
in
practices,
we
played
well
in
our
first
couple
of
matches.
But
we’ve
been
inconsistent.
After
we
started
three
freshmen
last
year,
I
thought
we
would
be
a
lot
better
than
what
we
are
right
now.
“Maybe
toward
the
end
of
the
season
we’ll
start
playing
better.
We’ve
got
to
get
that
consistency
we
need
in
some
way
or
form.
We
should
be
better.”
Up
from
the
JV
are
three
juniors,
Brandie
Lester,
Amanda
Sturgill,
and
Brittany
McClanahan.
Davis
knows
his
younger
players
have
the
athletic
ability
and
should
only
get
better.
He’d
just
like
to
see
his
club
move
up
in
the
BDD
this
year
while
Justus,
a
four-year
standout
as
a
setter,
is
around.
“We’re
going
to
miss
Sarah
Justus,”
Davis
said.
“She’s
been
playing
with
us
the
last
five
years
on
JV
and
varsity.

Rebels Drop
Close Non-District Contest to Big Creek,
18-14 |
|
|
|
Ronnie Benton scored
three
touchdowns
to
help
Big
Creek
get
by
Hurley,
18-14,
Friday
night
at
the
Owls
new
field
in
War,
West
Virginia.
Hurley
(0-5)
took
a
14-12
lead
into
the
fourth
quarter
where
Benton
put
Big
Creek
(2-3)
ahead
to
stay
with
a
20-yard
scoring
run
with
about
four
minutes
left
remaining.
Nathan
Justus
ran
for
125
yards
and
scored
two
touchdowns
for
the
Rebels.
The
senior
accumulated
240
all-purpose
yards,
including
80 on
a
kickoff
return
to
open
the
second
half.
“Nathan
ran
hard,”
Hurley
coach
Greg
Tester
said.
“He
was
still
running
hard
at
the
end
of
the
game.
That’s
the
best
game
he’s
had
so
far
this
year.
“We
had
plenty
of
chances
to
win.
We
had a
chance
on a
halfback
pass
when
we
were
down
18-14,
but
we
had
two
receivers
in
the
same
area.
That
was
my
fault.
We
had
some
miscommunication.
But
the
boys
played
hard
for
48
minutes.
Hats
off
to
them,
they
never
quit.”
Justus’s
22-yard
TD
run
tied
the
game
at
6-6
in
the
second
quarter.
His
two-point
conversion
run
after
his
second
TD
gave
the
Rebels
a
14-6
lead.
