Peggy Faye Boyd
(Mavisdale)

  Peggy Faye Lewis Boyd, 67, of Mavisdale, died Friday, September 22, 2006 at her home following an extended illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of Eva Lou Armes Lewis Owens of Mavisdale and the late George Lewis. She was a life-long resident of Buchanan County and a member of Little Prater Church of Christ. She attended Garden Creek Church of Christ and had attended Longwood College and was a retired employee of the Buchanan County School System, having worked at Vansant Elementary School as secretary for 34 years.
  In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joel Albert Boyd, Jr., March 15, 2006, and one grandchild, Kloyie Madison Boyd.
  In addition to her mother, she is survived by one daughter, Elizabeth, and husband, Donnie Yates of Mavisdale; one son, Joel Albert III and wife, Sheryl Boyd, of Mavisdale; one sister, Shirley, and husband, Clarence Bartlett, Jr. of Hillsville; three grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild.
  Services were held Monday, September 25 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evgs. Michael Trent, Rusty Owens and Wayne Cline officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Active pallbearers were David Glenn Bowman, Dean Arrington, Kennith Stiltner, Randy Smith, Peter Vasquez, Randy Skeens, Ronnie Yates, Gary Daniels and William Dickey.
  Honorary pallbearers were Dr. H. Muslu, Dr. M.V. Pillai, Ancil Childress, Clarence Bartlett, Jr., Tommy Rose, Leroy Jones, Richard Porter, Wesley Owens, Dallas Jackson and Rocky Bond.
  Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Arlie Davis
(Grundy)

  Arlie Davis, 80 years of age, went to be with the lord on Monday October 2, 2006 in Buchanan General Hospital. Born in Buchanan County on July 17, 1926, he was the son of the late Grant Davis and Elizabeth Charles Davis. He was of the Baptist Faith.
  In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers Adam, Delbert, and Auldie Davis. One sister Mary Davis.
  He was survived by one sister Nancy Collura of Brooklyn NY, one half sister Ruth Harrison of Kentucky. Two half brothers Roy Davis of California, and Clarence Davis of Maysville, KY.
  He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
  Graveside services for Arlie Davis will be conducted Thursday October 5, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. at the Mud Lick Cemetery on Convict Holler at Harman, VA with Pastor Randy Tedford officiating.
  Friends will serve as pallbearers.
  The family of Arlie Davis is being served by the Shortridge Ramey Funeral Home.

Dorothy Blankenship
(Grundy)

  Dorothy Lou Bentley Blankenship, 51, of Grundy, died Wednesday, September 27, 2006 at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Grundy following an extended illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Genessee and Gracie Adkins Bentley. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a former employee of Dotson's Drive Inn and Grundy Drug Store. She was a member of Harman Freewill Baptist Church.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.
  She is survived by her husband, Wheeler Blankenship; five sisters, Ocie Stiltner and Sylvia Quinley, both of Grundy, Emma Jean Fletcher of Charleston, WV, Barbara Hilton of Elkhorn City, KY and Mary Duncan of Beckley, WV; three brothers, Exodus Bentley, Chester Bentley and Levi Bentley, all of Grundy; one step-daughter, Barbara, and husband, David Justice, of Grundy; two step-sons, Danny, and wife, Michelle Blankenship and Wheeler Fitzgerald and wife, Sherry Blankenship, all of Grundy; four step-grandchildren, one aunt and two uncles.
  Services were held Monday at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Ministers E.C. Honaker and Jerry Matney and Evg. Michael Trent officiating. Burial followed in the Ratliff Cemetery near the Grundy Airport at Vansant.
  Active pallbearers were family and friends.
  Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

 

Jean Hardin
(Slate Creek)

  Jean Endicott Hardin, 58, of the Lower Mill Branch section of Slate Creek, died Wednesday, September 27, 2006 following an extended illness.
  Born in Pike County, KY, she was a daughter of the late Roy Victor and Marie Justice Endicott. She had been a resident of Buchanan County most of her life and was a member of Little Prater Church of Christ. She was a homemaker and the last surviving member of her immediate family.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Angela Ruth Hardin; and two sisters, Gaynell Hardin and Beulah Ruth Stiltner.
  She is survived by her husband, Paul David Hardin; one daughter, Shelia, and husband, David Eugene Johnson of Grundy; two half-sisters, Myrtle Joyce Reed of Sidney, KY and Martha Sue Dameron of Detroit, MI; one half-brother, Victor Endicott of Florida; two grandchildren.
  Services were held Saturday, September 30 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evg. Michael Trent and Gerald Vanover officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Active pallbearers were men of the Little Prater Church of Christ.
  Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Clint Sutherland and Dr. M.J. Thakkar.
  Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Charlene Hurley Estep
(Hurley)

  Charlene Hurley Estep, 68, of Hurley, died Thursday, September 28, 2006 at Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy following an extended illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Arthur Lambert and Nora Hurley. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a member of Little Prater Church of Christ. She was a teacher's aid for some 10 years in the Buchanan County School System.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Rhoda A. Dotson and Shelby J. Braatz.
  She is survived by her husband, Rufus Carl Estep; three daughters, Deborah K. Estep of Grundy, Tammy C. Estep of Hurley and Anita R. Estep of Richlands; one son, James Arthur Estep of Hurley; one sister, Darlene and husband, Don Ashby of Grundy.
  Services were held Sunday, October 1 at the Little Prater Church of Christ with Evgs. Michael Trent and Mike Rife and Minister Tommy Conn officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Active pallbearers were Ricky Stacy, Jerry Hurley, Frankie King, Nick Braatz, Jimmy Ling, Terry Hurley, Barry Barnett, Ricky Barnett, Roger Stacy and Kenneth Stacy.
  Honorary pallbearers were Vernon Estep, Wilson Allen, Andrew Hurley, Paul King, Richard Braatz, Don Ashby, Dr. Clint Sutherland, Dennis Hurley, Church Family of Little Prater Church of Christ, Coy Stacy, Tommy Conn, Troy Allen, Andrew Estep and staff of Special Care Hospice.
  Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of donations to the Little Prater Church of Christ.

Noah W. Horn
(Vansant)

  Noah W. Horn, 77, of Vansant, died Tuesday, September 26, 2006 at MD Anderson in Houston, TX.
  He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Wallace Horn and Hester Martha Mullins Horn, and brothers, Bascom, James and Lee, and one sister, Treca Horn Ratliff.
  He was the current president of Noah Horn Well Drilling, Inc., Horn's Pump Sevice, Inc. and Well Data Services, Inc.
  He is survived by his children, Marianne Skeens and husband, Eddie, of Grundy, Susan Johnson and husband, William Ray Johnson of Burnet, TX and Jeff Horn of Vansant; grandchildren, Meredith Gibson Henshaw, Jill Gibson, Alex Gibson, David Johnson, Benjamin Johnson, Leigh Ann Horn and Noah Richard Horn; four great-grandchildren; his companion, Connie Deel; and brothers and sisters, Pricy Horn Matney, Albert Horn, Arthur Horn and Elizabeth Horn Vandyke; one aunt and one uncle.
  Services were held Saturday, September 30 at Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel, Keen Mountain, with Ministers Mike Rife, Bill Neeley, Stan Paris and Larry Ratliff officiating. Burial followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill.
  Pallbearers were Alex Gibson, Richard Horn, David Johnson, Benjamin Johnson, Leon Boyd and Tim Elswick.
  Honorary pallbearers were Joe Addison, Sam Hale, Joe Street, Jerry Roulett, Virgil Bruinekool, Virgil Lawson, Jim Cook and nephews and employees of Noah Horn Well Drilling, Inc. and Well Data Services, Inc.

  Ellen Mullins Endicott, 77, of Paynesville, WV, died Monday, October 2, 2006 at Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy.
   Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Andy Mullins and Mavdia Mullins Mullins. She was a homemaker and was of the Church of Christ faith.
   In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five sisters, Della Stacy, Stella Blankenship, Mary Lee Mullins, Cythia Stacy, and Georgie Mullins; one brother, Glenn Mullins;  and one granddaughter, Angie Endicott.
   She is survived by her husband, Moscoe Endicott; three sons, Eddie Endicott and wife, Bonnie, Jeffery Endicott and companion, Becky Brown, both of Grundy, Freddie Endicott and companion, Elsie Slone, of Hurley; one sister,  Lucy Ward, of Paynesville, WV; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
   Services were held Wednesday, October 4 at Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel in Grundy with Evg. Vernon Blankenship officiating. Burial followed in the Mullins-Endicott family cemetery on State Line Ridge #1, Paynesville. Active pallbearers were Leo Ward, Cobo Stacy, Edgar Mullins, Jerry Rowe, Billy Vance, and Michael Matney .

Robert E. Smith
(Jolo, WV)

  Robert E. Smith, 57, of Jolo, WV, died Thursday, September 28, 2006 in Princeton Community Hospital.
  Born in English, WV, he was the son of the late Elige Smith and Opal Vencil Smith Lester. He was a disabled trucker and member of Rock Springs Church in Bradshaw, WV.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Brenda Smith Hayes.
  He is survived by one daughter, Bobbi Michelle Smith of Maxie; one granddaughter, Kristen ToraRae Smith of Maxie; several nephews and nieces.
  Services were held Monday, October 2 in Combs Funeral Service Chapel, Lebanon, with the Revs. Johnny Kiby and Charlie Dean Barker officiating. Burial followed in Grandview Memory Gardens, Bluefield, VA.
  Pallbearers were friends.
  Combs Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.


Richard Fuller
(Tazewell, VA)

  Richard "Dick" Fuller, 62, of Tazewell, died Thursday, September 28, 2006 at Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands following a logging accident.
  Born in Dickenson County, he was a son of Maxie Fuller and the late James C. Fuller. He was a logger and rodeo stock contractor.
  In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul and Floyd, and one sister, Ruth.
  In addition to his mother, he is survived by his fiance', Kim Mullins; two daughters, Andria Fuller of Royal Oak, MI and India Fuller of Tazewell; five sons, Anthony (Mona) Fuller of Swords Creek, Marcus Fuller of Tazewell, Richard Fuller, Jr. of Troy, MI, Douglas Fuller of Booneville, IN and James Fuller; three step-children, Rachael, Billy and Roo Mullins; two sisters, Nancy Potter of Elkhorn, KY and Linda Paduda of Fort Lauderdale, FL; five brothers, Johnny Fuller, Kenny Fuller and Frank Fuller, all of Haysi, Sidney Fuller of Daytona Beach, FL, and Stoney Fuller of Elkhorn, KY; three half-sisters, Nell Sutherland of Haysi, Lexie Looney of West Virginia and Belva Fuller of Clinchco; several grandchildren.
  Services were held Monday, October 2 at Haysi Funeral Home. Burial followed in the Fuller Cemetery at Haysi.
   Pallbearers were sons and step-sons.
   Haysi Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

 

Lowell C. VanDyke
(Doran, VA)

  Lowell C. VanDyke, 68, of Doran, died Monday, October 2, 2006 at Clinch Valley Medical Center, Richlands,  following an extended illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late George and Lou Looney VanDyke. He was a Grundy Senior High School Class of 1957 graduate and had spent most of his life in Ohio where he was a retired meat cutter for Dinner Bell Packing Company of Archbold, OH before moving back to Doran some 15 years ago.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters,  Helen Jackson, Ola Gay Matney, and Juanita Pasture.
  He is survived by his wife, Magaline Helton VanDyke; two daughters,  Teresa Vandyke of Dublin, OH and Debbie Castillo of Rockford, OH; three sons, Randy Lee VanDyke and wife, Pam, of Defiance, OH,  Tom VanDyke and wife, Kim, of Delaware, OH and  Tony VanDyke of Doran; five brothers, Noah VanDyke of Home Creek,  Marshall VanDyke Paul VanDyke and Joe VanDyke, all of Doran and Johnny VanDyke of Bristol, VA; seven grandchildren and one great-grandson.
  Services were held Wednesday, October 4 at Hurst-Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Dennis Hoffman officiating. Interment  followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill.
  Pallbearers were grandsons and nephews.
  Hurst-Scott Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Ruby Duncan
(Marvin, VA)

  Ruby Viola Addison Duncan, 86, of Marvin, died Saturday, September 30, 2006 at her home following an extended illness.
  Born in Page, she was the daughter of the late John Silas and Alta L. Phillips Addison, Buchanan County natives. She was a member of the Levisa Assembly Church.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Otis Horn; three sisters, Josie Horn, Pearl Meadows and Ruth Tickle; seven brothers, Theodore Ernest Addison, Duke Addison, Wilbur Addison, Burt Addison, Lee Addison, Robert Addison and John Addison.
  She is survived by her husband, Charles Duncan; three step-daughters, Sheila Dales and husband, Billy, of Garden Creek, Teresa Buchanan and husband, Carl, of Bristol, TN and Wanda Martin and husband, James, of Knoxville, TN; two step-sons, Ralph Duncan and wife, Connie, and Bill Duncan and wife, Kay, all of Moundville, AL; several nieces, nephews and step-grandchildren.
  Services were held Tuesday at Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel, Keen Mountain, with the Revs. James Hale and Ancil Childress officiating. Burial followed in the Addison-Mutter Cemetery at Whet Stone Branch.
  Pallbearers were family and friends.

Virginia Mae Plaster
(Swords Creek, VA)

  Virginia Mae Plaster,  84, of the Pine Creek section of Swords Creek, died Sunday, October 1, 2006 in a Bristol, TN hospital.
  Born in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late John and Mary Robinette Richardson. A lifelong resident of the area, she was of the Pentecostal faith.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Plaster; three grandchildren, Tommy Whited, Wilma Jean Barber, and Jeremiah Plaster; three sisters, Dora Webb, Pearl Cole, and Carlie Mutter; and one brother, Clarence Richardson.
  Survivors include two daughters, Ruby Whited and husband, Willard, of Raven and Brenda Perkins and husband, Henry of Richlands; three sons, David W. Plaster and Jerry Plaster, both of the home, and Larry Plaster and wife, Tammy of Rosedale; three sisters, Myrtle Plaster of Richlands, Ida Richardson of Raven, and Dorothy Whited of Doran; one brother, Robert Richardson of Pine Creek; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
  Services were held at 2 p.m. (today), Thursday, in Honaker with the Revs. Jim Richardson, Carl Robinson, and Buddy Hearl officiating. Interment will follow in the family cemetery at Pine Creek.
  Pallbearers will be Jackie Richardson, Glen Richardson, Bobby Boyd, Russell Whited, Timothy Boyd, and Scott Bowman.

Lesley Ellen Burns

(Greenville, SC)

  Lesley Ellen Parish Burns, 41, of Greenville, SC, died September 29, 2006 at the Greenville Memorial Medical Center.
  Born in Asheville, NC, she was the daughter of Roger and Lynn Parish. She was a graduate of UNC Charlotte and was employed as an electrical engineer with Duke Energy, Oconee Nuclear Station. She was an officer in the "Women in Nuclear" organization. An active member of Jones Avenue Baptist Church, she was a member of the Circle of Friends Sunday School Class,  a Vacation Bible School worker and served on the Fellowship committee.
  In addition to her parents, she was survived by her husband, Lanny; one sister, Kathryn Parish Hartwig, and husband, Ronald, of Taylors; two nephews, Nathan and Conner Hartwig; one brother-in-law, Austin Burns, of Sunset; and mother-in-law, Jamie C. Burns of Campobello.
  Services were held Tuesday at the Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown Chapel with interment following in the Motlow Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Campobello.
  Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of memorials to Miracle Hill Children's Home, 117 Drummond Lane, Pickens, SC 29671.

Mollissie Keene

(Markham, VA)

  Mollissie Street Keene,  88, of Markham, formerly of Honaker, died Sunday, October 1, 2006 in a Front Royal hospital.
  Born in Skeggs, she was a daughter of the late Anthony Street, Sr. and Lou Tiny Fletcher Street. She had lived in Markham for the past five years, moving there from Honaker. She was of the Pentecostal faith.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Keene; one son, Frank Keene; one infant daughter, Della Joyce Keene; one brother, Anthony Street, Jr.; and six sisters, Zella Keen, Nancy Street, Gladys McGlothlin, Lydia Hess, Maudie Shortridge, and Edgar Price.
  She is survived by two daughters, Irene and husband, Victor Presley of Markham and Edith and husband, Melvin Green of Manassas; two sisters, Nellie McGlothlin of Rowe and Marie Weaver of Leesburg; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
  Services will be held today (Thursday), October 5 at 11 a.m. in Honaker the with Revs. Ancil Childress and Rev. Arvil Arwood officiating. Interment will follow in the McGlothlin Cemetery at Rowe.
