Pearl Edith Colley
(Grundy)

  Pearl Edith Colley, 72, of Grundy, died Thursday, October 19, 2006 at Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Floyd Looney, and Crettie Ratliff Looney. She was a former employee of Grundy Drive Inn, Rainbow Restaurant and was a member of Harman Freewell Baptist Church. She was the first lady metermaid and town police officer for the town of Grundy.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Frank Carl Thomas and Edd Colley; one sister, Ocie Stiltner; and three brothers,  Melvin, Lee, and Clayton Looney.
  Survivors include one daughter, Vicki Lynn Thomas Blankenship, and husband, Greg, of Grundy; one son, Kennith Looney of Charleston, SC; four sisters, Ida Burks and Edna Stiltner, both of Grundy,  Ival Woodriff, of Indianapolis, IN, and Grethal Ryan of Tazewell; three brothers, Lonnie Looney, William Looney and Stuart Looney, all of Grundy; three grandchildren, Steven Scott Young, Charlie Looney, and Shawn Looney; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Monday, October 23, at  Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel in Grundy with the Revs. Ronnie Sliger and Eddie Wilson officating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Active pallbearers were Greg Blankenship, Ethan Young, Timmy Shortridge, Ronnie Dean Burks, Scott Young, Ferrell Thomas, Eddie Snell, and Dean Looney
  Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Michael Keith Wallace
(Grundy)

  Michael Keith Wallace, 52, of Grundy, died Tuesday, October 17, 2006 at his home.
  Born in Pineville WV, he was the son of Nora May Boyd Wallace Fillers, and the late Robert Daniel Wallace. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, and was retired from American Electric Power where he had been employed  for 27 years.
  In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one brother, David Matt Wallace.
  In addition to his mother, he is survived by his step-father, James Fillers of Salisbury NC; his wife, Mabelene Stiltner Wallace; one daughter,  Jacklyn Cristina Wallace of the home; one son, Brandon Michael Wallace of the home; one sister,  Karola Ann Sundburg of Florida; two brothers, Robert Patton Wallace and wife, Bonnie, of Compton Mountain and Mark Douglas and wife, Dottie, of Spencer, NC; several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Saturday, October 21, at Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel in Grundy with Jessie Foster officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock. Full military rites will were held at the cemetery by John Ratliff Post of the American Legion.
  Active pallbearers were family and friends.
  Honorary pallbearers were Randy Owens, Derek Owens, Michael Blankenship, Patrick Williams, employees of American Electric Power, Virginia Medical Respiratory management and staff, Josh Clifton, Krissi Byrd, Chuckey McCoy, Roger Stiltner, Auty Jackson, Ricky Sargent, Dr. D Patel, and Lacy Stiltner.
  Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Emily Gay Blankenship
(Vansant)

  Emily Gay Blankenship, 87, died Sunday, October 22, 2006 at her home.
  A lifelong resident of Buchanan County, she was a retired employee of the Buchanan County School System, serving 15 years as a cook at Russell Prater Elementary. She was also a long-time member of the Grundy Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses.
  She was preceded in death by her husband, Noah Blankenship; one son, Jerrell Blankenship; one grandson, Anthony (Tony) Blankenship; brothers, Bruce, Guy, Grethel and Lonnie Owens; and an infant sister, Beulah Owens.
  She is survived by one son, Darrell (Sue) Blankenship of Vansant; three daughters, Sherry (Herman) Church and Cynthia (Ray) Viars, both of Haysi and Rita Dunn of Mountain City, TN; two sisters, Fannie Lane of Vansant and Imogene Deel of Jacksonville, FL; 16 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
  Services will be held today (Thursday), October 26 at Haysi Funeral Home with Elder Edison Baker officiating. Burial followed in the Owens Family Cemetery, located in the Paw Paw section of Russell Prater.
  Pallbearers were grandchildren.
  Haysi Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Frankie Dean Church
(Vansant)

  Frankie Dean Church, 44, of Vansant, died Friday, October 20, 2006 at the Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy following an extended illness. 
  Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of Gervis Church of Pontiac, MI and the late Dorothy Cox.  He was a member of  Big Fox Community Church and was a truck driver for Matney Construction. 
  Survivors include his wife, Tammy Denise Rife Church; one son,   Michael James Dean Church, of the home; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, James and Ruby Rife of Vansant; two sisters, Beverly Allen of Hurley and Linda Smith of Cedar Bluff;  one brother, Jeffrey Church of Abingdon.
  Services were held Monday, October 23 at  Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Lester Boyd, Evg. Mike Rife and the Rev. Roscoe Rife officiating. Entombment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum, Claypool Hill.
  Active pallbearers were Phillip Keen, Gary Viars, Albert Cook, Jimmy Smith, Rex Allen,  J. R. Rowe, Christopher Allen, Chris Vandyke, Roy Lee Rife and Harold Smith.
  Honorary pallbearers were Ellis Matney, Terry Matney, Shawn Matney, Chris Bostic and employees of Matney Construction.

Gertrude Blankenship
(Grundy)

  Gertrude Blankenship, 62, of Grundy, died Tuesday, October 17, 2006 at her home.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Ellis Henry and Lula Davis Justus. She was a homemaker and member of North Springs Old Regular Baptist Church.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ira Blankenship, May 3, 1994; one son, Jerry Blankenship; one foster son, Kirby Justus; three grandchildren, Donald and Ronald Lester and Christopher Gerald Blankenship; five sisters; and two brothers.
  She is survived by seven sons, Earl Blankenship, Ray Blankenship, Sonnie Blankenship and wife, Tonya, Ira Blankenship, Jr. and wife, Samantha, Jerald Blankenship and wife, Leslie, Ronnie Blankenship and wife, Shelia, all of Rt. 1, Grundy, and Donnie Blankenship and wife, Rhonda, of Florahome, FL; six daughters, Mrs. Jimmy (Faye) Lester, Mrs. Hassell (Mary) Quinley, Sherry and Bonnie Blankenship, all of Rt. 1, Grundy, Mrs. Delbert, Jr. (Sarah) Charles of Vansant and Mrs. Darrell (Connie) Stacy of Hurley; two sisters, Joann Charles of Hurley and Carol Sue Matney of Grundy; three brothers, Mack Arthur Justus and John Henry Justus of Hurley and Bobby Stanley Justus of Stacy; seven grandsons, Jerry Ray Lester and wife, Pam, Hassell Andrew Quinley, Mark Anthony Charles, Robert Lee Blankenship, Steven Warren Stacy, William Rawlins and Camryn Wade Hensley; seven granddaughters, Misty Dawn Charles, Amy Danielle Quinley, Courtney Paige Stacy, Brittney Brianna Stacy, Kelli Denise Blankenship, Kara Leann Blankenship and Kaylee Jade Blankenship.
  Services will be held Friday, October 20, at 1 p.m. at the home with elders of the North Springs Old Regular Baptist Church officiating. Burial followed in the Justus Cemetery at Rt. 1, Grundy.
  Pallbearers were grandsons and sons-in-law.
  Flower girls were daughters-in-law and granddaughters.

George Edward Payne
(Mavisdale)

  George Edward Payne, 52, of Mavisdale, died Sunday October 15, 2006 following an automobile accident.
  Born in McDowell County, he was the son of the late Julius Payne and Gladys Lester Payne. He was a retired coal miner, a member of the UMWA #1640 and was a woodworker. He was of  the Pentecostal faith.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Janice Payne.
  Survivors include his wife, Cathy Payne; two daughters, Heather Lee and husband, Jay, and Christy Smith and  husband, Brad, all of Bristol, VA; five sisters,  Rose Dye and husband, Bruce, of Patterson, Phyllis Elswick and  husband, Jerry, of Marion, Hettie Mae McGuire and husband, Jimmy, of Raysal WV, Peggy Smith and husband, Dewey, of Rural Retreat, and Ruby Musser and husband, Roger, of Chilhowie; one brother, Randall Payne and wife, Lisa, of Bandy; two granddaughters, Rachael Madyson Smith and Makinzi Jordan Smith, both of Bristol, VA; and several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Wednesday October 18 at Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel in Grundy with Pastor Dave Gibson officiating. Burial followed in the Wiley Mullins Cemetery on Estep Ridge, Paynesville, WV.
  Pallbearers were family and friends.
  Honorary pallbearers were sons-in-law, Jay Lee and Brad Smith.

Kermit McClanahan
(Slate Creek)

  Kermit McClanahan,  85, of the Slate Creek section of Buchanan County, died Friday, October 20, 2006, at Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy following an extended illness. 
  Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Charlie Walter and Flora Rowe McClanahan.  He was a life-long resident of Buchanan County and a retired coal miner.  He served in the United States Army for four years during World War II.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Cora Stacy McClanahan, and his second wife,  Edna Sue Mullins McClanahan; one sister, Beulah Lester, and one brother, Russell McClanahan.
  Survivors include two step-daughters, Dorothy Akers of Grundy and Teresa Lauffer of Johnson City, TN; four sisters, Neta Clevinger and Hazel Barnett, both of Elkton, MD,  Thelma Whitt of Meadowview and Trula Lester of Paynesville, WV; five brothers,  Bransome McClanahan and Frank McClanahan, both of Grundy,  Leo McClanahan of North East, MD,  Paul McClanahan of Johnson City, TN and Chester McClanahan            of New Baltimore, MI; and five step-grandchildren.
  Services were held Monday, October 23 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evgs. Mike Trent and Mike Rife officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock. Full military rites were conducted at the cemetery by members of John Ratliff Post #164 of the American Legion.
  Active pallbearers were family and friends.

Virginia Ruth Crum
(Roanoke, VA)

  Virginia Ruth Collins Crum, 74, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, October 18, 2006 at the home of her daughter following an extended illness. 
  Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late John D. and Cora Mae Stiltner Collins.  She resided most of her life in Buchanan County before moving to Roanoke in 1994. She worked as a young woman in movie theaters and retired from the switchboard operator position at Jewell Smokeless Coal Corporation in 1993 where she had been employed for 20 years. Following the move to Roanoke, she volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William (Red) Crum, July 22, 1992; one son, William Lewis Crum; three brothers, Marshall Collins, Frank Collins and Russell Collins; three sisters, Geneva Prater, Mildred Hibbitts and Carolyn Singleton; and three infant sisters, Margie, Rachel and Nancy Collins. 
  She is survived by two daughters, Vivian Martinez and Donna Boone, both of Roanoke; three brothers, George (Buster) Collins of Bristol, VA, Gene Collins of            O’Fallon, IL and Johnny Collins of Sequin, FL; one sister, Suda (Sudie) Stiltner of Green Cove Springs, FL; two grandchildren, William Fitzgerald and Andrea Varidakis of Roanoke;  several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Sunday, October 22 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evgs. Michael Trent and Bill Neeley officiating. Burial followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill.
  Active pallbearers were Danny Collins, Gary Collins, Randy Collins, Steve Singleton, Charlie Yates and Chad Yates.
  Honorary pallbearers  were  Dr. Ezekial Jones, Dr. William Fintel, Lisa Perez and Ann LeDe.

Bertha D. Arrington
(Haysi, VA)

  Bertha D. Arrington, 93, of Haysi, died Sunday, October 22, 2006 at Mountain View Regional Medical Center in Norton.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Alex and Margaret Deel. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Arrington; one son, Joe C. Arrington; one brother, Thurman Deel; and one sister, Verna Keene.
  Survivors include one son, Paul (Becky) Arrington of Haysi; one daughter, Nancy (Johnny) Goodwin, of Abingdon; one daughter-in-law, Jama Arrington, of Haysi; three sisters, Bonnie Owens of Abingdom, Nell Arrington of Boydndton Beach, FL and Virchel Owens of Abingdon; one grandson, Joe C. (Alyson) Arrington, Jr. of Bristol, TN; one granddaughter, Donna (Bobby) Schatzburg of Tampa, FL; and four great-grandchildren.
  Services will be held today (Thursday), October 24 at Haysi Funeral Home with Pastor Danny Sluss officiating. Graveside services were held Wednesday, October 25 at the Bud Deel Cemetery at Prater.
  Pallbearers were Dean Looney, Joe C. Arrington, Jr., Bobby Schatzburg, Jack Church, Clyde C. Keene, Gilbert Clevinger, Brian Owens, Bob Boatwright and Jerry Dick Sutherland.
  Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Rimon Ibrahim, Dr. Francis Jaynal, Dr. Bassam Sarrouj, Dr. David Miller and Dr. Charles M. Owens.

Junior Dye
(Honaker, VA)

  Junior Dye, 50, of Honaker, died Saturday, October 21, 2006  in a Lebanon hospital.
  Born in Richlands,  he was a son of the Rev. Ralph and Evelyn Wallace Dye of Drill.
  A lifelong resident of the area, he was a disabled coal miner and construction worker. He was a United States Army veteran, having been stationed in Germany.
  He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Ernest and Nunie Dye and his maternal grandparents, Thomas and Mamie Wallace.
  In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Wilma Jean Dye; one son, Duane Dye of the home; one daughter, Crystal Lynn Dye of Nixa, MO; one granddaughter, Jessi Jade Shadden of Nixa; two brothers, Jimmy Dye of Lebanon and Steve Dye of Ozark, MO; one sister, Mona Hunsucker of Cave Springs, AR; several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held today (Thursday) in Honaker with the Rev. Fairley Spencer officiating. Interment followed in the Casey Hollow Cemetery at Pine Creek.
  Pallbearers were relatives and friends.

Paul H. Endicott
(Richlands, VA)

  Paul Howard Endicott, 62, of Richlands, died Saturday, October 21, 2006 at his home following an extended illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Harve and Sybil Stiltner Endicott,  both Buchanan County natives. He was of the Holiness faith.
  Survivors include his wife, Sharon Sue Sturgill Endicott; two step-daughters, Linda Lou Moore and Rachel Sue Jessee, both of Buchanan County; one son, Paul Howard Endicott, Jr. of the home;  two sisters, Lavada Howell of Richlands and Sylvia Wright of Bandy;  one brother, Harve Endicott, Jr. of Richlands; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held October 24 at  Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands with the Rev. Darrell Sutherland officiating. Interment followed at the Esau-Rife Cemetery on Keen Mountain.
  Pallbearers were Paul Endicott, Jr., Ricky Howell, Jackie Howell, Russell Hicks, Peanut Lane and Ricky Howell, Jr.

Blanche Ratliff
(Honaker, VA)

  Blanche Ratliff,  92, of Honaker, died Tuesday, October 17, 2006 in a Lebanon nursing facility.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Abe and Nora Boyd Barton. A lifelong resident of the area, she was a member of Bee Pentecostal Holiness Church.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Shade Ratliff; one son, Don Ratliff; one infant son; one infant daughter; one grandson, Fayne Presley; four brothers and three sisters.
  She is survived by two daughters, Susie and husband,  Leroy Stevens, of Honaker and Martha and husband, Andrew Presley, of Davenport; one son, Walden and wife, Betty Ratliff, of Michigan City, IN; daughter-in-law, Fayrene Ratliff, of Davenport; two sisters, Martha Hall of Rowe and Ollie Smith; 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Thursday in Honaker with the Rev. Darrell Milgrim officiating. Entombment followed in Forest Hills Memory Gardens Mausoleum, Abingdon.
  Pallbearers were grandsons.

Robert Junior Barnes
(War, WV)

  Robert Junior Barnes, 57, of War WV, died Thursday, October 19, 2006 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center, Bluefield, VA.
  Born in McDowell County, WV, he was the son of the late Reese Barnes, and Eunice Mae Christian Barnes.
  He is survived by two sisters, Juanita Southard of Smithton, MO and Pauline Stinson of Iaeger, WV; two brothers, Arthur Barnes of Roanoke and William Barnes of War, WV.
  His body was cremated at his request.

John P Mason
(Chatham Hill, VA)

  John P. Mason, 42, of Chatham Hill, died Monday, October 16, 2006 at his home.
  He was the owner/operator of Mason Gun Shop.
  He was preceded in death by his parents, William "Bill" Mason and Irene Duty Mason; one sister, Sarah Anne Hoel; and grandparents, Ernest and Wilma Fowler Mason, John Bunyon Duty and Bessie McClanahan Duty.
  He is survived by one brother, William "Wil" Mason, of Chatham Hill; two aunts, Nell Woodrum of Grundy and Agnes Mabe of Great Falls, MT.
  Services were held Thursday, October 19 at Henderson Funeral Home. Graveside services were held Friday at Ridgedale Cemetery.
  Pallbearers were David Woodrum Sr., David (Davy) Woodrum, Jr., Malcolm (Mike) Daniels, Sr., Malcolm Daniels, Jr., John G. Duty, George Cook, Hank Cook and Jim Coultland.

Cindy Hunt
(Phoenix, AZ)

  Cindy Hunt, 47, of Phoenix, AZ, formerly of Carlisle, KY, died Wednesday, October 11, 2006 at Hospice of the Valley in Phoenix following a brief illness.
  She was a member of North Phoenix Baptist Church and was employed as a registered nurse at St. Joseph's  Hospital until her illness.
  In addition to her mother, Ruth Clay, she is survived by her husband, Jeffrey M. Hunt, of Phoenix, formerly of Breaks; one son, Branddon Hunt, of the U.S. Navy, stationed in Connecticut; one daughter, Laura Hunt of the home; two brothers, Jim and David; two sisters, Ellen and Dixie; several nieces and nephews.
  A memorial service will be held Thursday, October 26 at 6 p.m. at the Elkhorn City Church of Christ.

Rev. Carlice McGlothlin, Sr.
(Centreville, VA)

  Rev. Carlice McKinley "Kin" McGlothlin, Sr.,  90, of Centreville, died Friday, October 20, 2006. Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Nealy and Margie Arwood McGlothlin.  He moved to Prince William County in 1939 where he managed the Whitmore Farm in Catharpin. He also lived in Hickory Grove and Waterfall before building his home in Centreville in 1958.  He pastored the Brentsville Assembly of God Church from 1957-1967, when  the congregation built the Bristow Assembly of God Church where he pastored until 1981.  He was also a veteran of World War II.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Anna Keene McGlothlin, in 1983;  four grandchildren, Mark and John Mills, Sally Mills Blouin and Todd Dawson; a great grandson, Corey Reese and 12 brothers and sisters.
  Survivors include his wife, the Rev. Linda Kennedy McGlothlin; nine daughters, Cathy LouElla Smith and Margie J. Mills, both of Culpeper, Peggy Schloe of Haymarket, Linda Smith of Sperryville, Sylvia Taylor of Nokesville, Betty Marcus of Catlett, Wanda Dawson of Marshall, Sue Dean of Reva and Sharon McGlothlin Dean of Timberville; two sons, Carlice McGlothlin, Jr. of Barboursville and Wayne McGlothlin of Rose Hill, KS; one sister, Ruth Welch Street of Rowe; 33 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren.
  Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, October 26, at Belvoir Assembly of God Church, 4180 Belvoir Road, The Plains, VA with the Rev. D. Tony Willis officiating, assisted by the Rev. Jerry Schloe and the Rev. Ken Taylor.  Interment will follow at Carter Cemetery near Marshall. 
  Pallbearers will be the grandchildren.


Josiephine Reynolds
(Richlands, VA)

  Josiephine "Josie" Cordle Reynolds, 86, of the Kent's Ridge Road section of Richlands, died Sunday, October 15, 2006 at her home following an extended illness.
  Born in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Holmes Cordle, both Russell County natives. She was a lifelong resident of the Richlands area and was of the Pentecostal faith.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Virginia Lee Reynolds; one son, Tommy Reynolds; one grandson, Jim Deakins-Reynolds; several sisters and brothers. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
  Survivors include her husband, George "Monk" Reynolds; one son, George R. "Bob" Reynolds and wife, Evelyn, of Richlands; daughter-in-law, Betty Byrd Sanders Deakins of Kingsport, TN; grandchildren, Keith Reynolds, Jeff Reynolds, Elizabeth Cline, Sandy Deakins-Reynolds and Drew Deakins; nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
  Services were held Tuesday at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Rusty Ward officiating. Interment followed in Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery in Richlands.
  Pallbearers were relatives and friends.
