Honaker
Clinches
Tie for
BDD
Volleyball
Title
With
3-Game
Sweep of
Council |
|
|
|
by
Lloyd Combs
Sports Reporter
Honaker
clinched a tie for the Black
Diamond District
regular season volleyball crown by
sweeping three
straight games from Council
Thursday night at Council
Elementary School.
Honaker had a chance to
claim the BDD title outright
by winning battle of Lady Tigers
at Haysi. A Hays
victory could force a playoff for
regular season
honors.
Tuesday’s showdown was
set up by Honaker’s 25-21,
25-18, 25-12 victory Thursday at
Council. The Lady
Tigers went to 7-0 in BDD play and
improved to 13-4
overall.
Samantha Farmer and Billee
Jo Mullins combined for 10
kills to lead Honaker, which
overcame a sluggish start
that included series of early
mistakes, including nine
bad serves in the first game
alone.
Paige Tiller got all of her
12 service points in in
consecutive fashion in the third
and clinching game,
when the Lady Tigers built a 17-1
advantage.
"Billee Jo and Sam
both stepped up," Honaker
coach Kim
Compton said. "And Paige got
us going in the third
game.
"We’ve been
inconsistent all season long. But
it’s
more mental than skill. The girls
have the skill, the
talent. It’s something we’ve
worked on. We just have
to get out of it before we can go
anywhere (in the
post-season)."
Council, which has
eight freshmen and two sophomores
on a 10-player roster, got five
service points each
from
Allison Presley and Kara Fuller.
