Rebels Drop Homecoming to 15th Ranked Tug Valley

Tug Valley spoiled homecoming for Hurley with a 38-6 win over the Rebels Friday night at The Cliff.
The Panthers, who have gone from last year’s 0-10 campaign to being the 15th ranked Class A team in West Virginia, scored twice in each of the first two periods and built a 32-0 halftime advantage.
Nathan Justus provided a couple of bright spots for Hurley (0-7), rushing for over 100 yards and scoring the only Rebel touchdown of the game.
Justus returned a third quarter kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown after Tug Valley (6-2) had extended its lead to 38-0.
A senior, Justus ran for 107 yards on 21 carries and had 187 all-purpose yards.
There were few other highlights for the Rebels. At least, says first-year Hurley coach Greg Tester, his young team still plays hard.
"The kids won’t quit," Tester says. "Things haven’t gone very well for us this season, but the kids are hanging in there.
"We just have to teach them to become better football players. We have to get back to the basics and keep working on the fundamentals."
It was the fifth straight win for Tug Valley, which got most of its 283 yards of total offense, including 181 yards passing, in the first half. A complete scoring summary or individual stats for the Panthers were not available.
Hurley got 152 of its 168 yards on the ground.
The Rebels travel to Haysi for a Black Diamond
   District contest Friday.

Haysi Suffers First Loss at Hands of Lee High, 28-18

A pair of second-half fumbles proved costly for Haysi as Lee handed the Tigers their first defeat of the season, a 28-18 setback Friday night at Five Star Stadium in Ben Hur, Va.
Haysi out-gained Lee on the ground (202-168) and in the air (68-40). Lance Compton threw two touchdown passes, both to Nathan Boyd, for the Tigers, while freshman quarterback Tyler Mullins ran for two scores for the Generals.
A 24-yard field goal by Allen Owens in the first quarter and an 18-yard touchdown pass from Compton to Boyd in the second period gave Haysi (5-1) a 10-7 halftime lead.
Fumbles set up two of Lee’s three TD runs in the second half.
Mullins, who scored on a 53-yard run in the first period, gave the Generals the lead for good with a one-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Mullins accounted for 109 of Lee’s 208 yards of total offense.
Lee (2-5) built a 28-10 lead with two fourth quarter scores. Haysi scored on a five-yard touchdown pass from Compton to Boyd late in the final period.
Haysi hosts Hurley in Black Diamond District action Friday at Sandlick.

Honaker Overcomes Turnovers to Earn Win Over Bearcats

Honaker overcame five turnovers with solid defense and two fourth-quarter touchdowns to earn a 14-7 non-district win over Virginia High Friday night at Fuller Field.
Justin Newberry capped the exciting comeback with a game-winning, six-yard TD run with 34.7 seconds remaining. It finished an 18-play, 79-yard drive which lasted seven minutes and a second and it gave the Tigers their fifth win in six games.
Defense kept Honaker (5-3) in the game in the first half. Virginia High (4-3) started six possessions in Tiger territory, but scored just once, on a 25-yard TD pass from Zak Messer Randy White late in the first quarter.
The Bearcats missed a 25-yard field goal and lost two fumbles inside the Honaker 25-yard line.
"I don’t know of a time where I’ve seen a team put someone in that good a field position as many times as we did," Honaker coach Doug Hubbard said.
Logan Ball got Honaker on the scoreboard with a 30-yard touchdown run early in the final quarter and picked up a key first down on the game-winning drive later in the period. Ball finished with 91 yards rushing and now has 1,104 yards on the ground in eight games.
Allan Eccleston rushed 28 times for 145 times for the Bearcats. Virginia High turned the ball over three times.
Honaker has an open date this week. The Tigers travel to Hurley for a Black Diamond District contest Oct. 27.

Honaker Clinches Tie for BDD Volleyball Title With 3-Game Sweep of Council

by Lloyd Combs
Sports Reporter

Honaker clinched a tie for the Black Diamond District regular season volleyball crown by sweeping three straight games from Council Thursday night at Council Elementary School.
Honaker had a chance to claim the BDD title outright by winning battle of Lady Tigers at Haysi. A Hays victory could force a playoff for regular season honors.
Tuesday’s showdown was set up by Honaker’s 25-21, 25-18, 25-12 victory Thursday at Council. The Lady Tigers went to 7-0 in BDD play and improved to 13-4 overall.
Samantha Farmer and Billee Jo Mullins combined for 10 kills to lead Honaker, which overcame a sluggish start that included series of early mistakes, including nine bad serves in the first game alone.
Paige Tiller got all of her 12 service points in in consecutive fashion in the third and clinching game, when the Lady Tigers built a 17-1 advantage.
"Billee Jo and Sam both stepped up," Honaker coach Kim Compton said. "And Paige got us going in the third game.
"We’ve been inconsistent all season long. But it’s more mental than skill. The girls have the skill, the talent. It’s something we’ve worked on. We just have to get out of it before we can go anywhere (in the post-season)."
Council, which has eight freshmen and two sophomores on a 10-player roster, got five service points each from Allison Presley and Kara Fuller.
