Abingdon Spoils Wave Homecoming
Grundy's Costly Mistakes Help Falcons Post 37-16 Win

by Lloyd Combs
Sports Reporter

Grundy’s first quarter mistakes helped Abingdon take the lead. Its second half miscues gave the Falcons the win.
Abingdon spoiled Grundy’s homecoming with a 37-16 win over the Golden Wave Friday night at Nelson Memorial Field.
Grundy erased most of 13-0 and 19-6 deficits, and trailed by just three points, until Abingdon scored on the final play of the first half. Five-yard touchdown runs by Josh Lindsay and Josh Ratliff in the second quarter got the Wave within 19-16.
"We moved the ball," Grundy coach Greg Rowe said. "But mistakes killed us. On our first possession we get a (holding) penalty, (then) we get called for interference."
Abingdon seized momentum at the end of the half and never gave it up. The Falcons blocked a Golden Wave punt with three seconds remaining and scored on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Adam Henderson on the final play of the half.
The Falcons blocked another punt and forced three Grundy turnovers to put the game out of reach in the second half. Two of those turnovers led to touchdowns.

Twin Valley Falls Victim to Aerial Assault at St. Paul

Twin Valley took two long bus rides, only to fall victim to an assault from the air.
Freshman quarterback Tyler Phillips was 9-of-11 passing for 209 yards and three touchdowns to lead St. Paul to a 55-20 non-district win over Twin Valley Saturday evening.
The game was originally scheduled to be played on Friday. No officials showed up, however, and the game was moved back to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.
St. Paul, which went on with its homecoming festivities Friday, got its offense rolling in the second quarter Saturday, scoring five touchdowns and 35 points to build a 42-12 halftime lead.
Josh Brooks hauled two of Phillips’ TD tosses and caught five passes for 138 yards. He was also one of five Deacons to run for a touchdown, going 65 yards for a score in the second period.
Twin Valley (1-6) took a 12-7 lead early in the second quarter. Jory Rife tossed a 31-yard TD pass to Matthew Baldwin in the first period and Garrett Horne threw a 15-yard option pass to Wyatt Justus for a touchdown early in the second quarter.
