Smith and Jimmy Ashby have combined for five
long touchdown passes this season. But Ashby’s second
TD Friday was, by far, the most dramatic.
Ashby hauled in a 33-yard TD pass from Smith
with four
seconds remaining to give Grundy a thrilling, 24-20,
win over interstate rival Shelby Valley, Ky., Friday
night at Nelson Memorial Field.
The Golden Wave overcame three second-half
turnovers,
the last one coming at the Shelby Valley three-yard
line with 1:43 remaining. The Wave defense stopped the
Wildcats on three plays, but Grundy had 38 seconds to
go 46 yards with no timeouts.
Four plays later, Smith and Ashby collaborated
for one
of the most exciting endings to a Grundy game in
years.
With the clock winding down, Smith had to run
for his
life, while Ashby managed to get open downfield. With
his back to the end zone, Ashby used his 6-foot-5
frame to shield a defender as he jumped at the goal
line and snared the ball with both hands.
He then turned and stretched his way into the end
zone
to give Grundy (1-3) its first win and hand Shelby
Valley (5-1) its first loss of the year.
"It was a low snap," Smith said of the
game-winning
play. "I picked the ball up off the ground, got hit
and stepped up. My line did a great job holding them
off me. (They gave) me time, I somehow scrambled
around,
and saw Jimmy at the goal line. For more of the story, see the print
