Emma Jewell Horn
(Coaldan - Buchanan County)

  Emma (Edith) Jewell Horn, 79, of Coaldan in Buchanan County, died Thursday, October 5, 2006.
  Born in Coaldan, she was a daughter of the late Edd Jewell and Della Asbury Jewell. She was a member of Vansant Baptist Church where she served as church clerk, G.A. leader and was active with the Vacation Bible School. She was a member of the Vansant Baptist church choir and was an active supporter of the American Cancer Society and Relay for Life. She was a business woman and helped co-found Noah Horn Well Drilling, Inc..
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Robert McKinley Jewell, Henry Jewell, Richard Jewell and Sherman Jewell; and one sister, Gladys Jewell Ratliff.
  She is survived by two daughters, Marianne and husband, Eddie Skeens, of Grundy and Susan and husband, Ray Johnson, of Burnet, TX; one son, Jeffery Horn, of Vansant; one sister, Stella Horn, of Roanoke; three granddaughters, Meredith Gibson Henshaw, Jill Gibson and Leigh Ann Horn; four grandsons, Alex Gibson, David Johnson, Noah Richard Horn and Benjamin Johnson; and four great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Sunday, October 8 at Vansant Baptist Church with the Rev. Stan Parris officiating. Burial followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill.
  Active pallbearers were Randy Vandyke, Dr. Clint Sutherland, David Thornbury, Kermit Rowe, James Dellinger, Randy Fletcher, James Keen, Ural Childress, Joe Breeding, Tommy Compton, Leon Looney and Eddie Joe Hess.
  Honorary pallbearers were grandsons, Clayton Vandyke, Albert Horn, Tim Elswick, Leon Boyd, Joey Yates and Arthur Horn.
  Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of contributions to Vansant Baptist Church, P.O. Box 649, Vansant, VA 24656 or to the Buchanan County chapter of the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 492, Grundy, VA 24614-0492.

David Roger Rice
(Breaks)

  David Roger Rice, 57, of Breaks, died Tuesday, October 3, 2006 at the Good Shepard Nursing Home, Phelps, KY, following an extended illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of Von Slone Rice of Breaks and the late Gene Rice. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and was a disabled coal miner. He was a member of Little Josie Old Regular Baptist Church.
  He is survived by one daughter, Chelsea and husband, Stewart Franklin of Green Cove Springs, FL; one sister, Shirley and husband, Danny Willis of Breaks; two brothers, Johnny and wife, Rita Rice, of Breaks and Gene Jr. and wife, Emil Rice of Tazewell; two grandchildren, Chaz and Stewart Franklin of Green Cove Springs.
  Services were held Saturday, October 7 at Little Josie Old Regular Baptist Church, Breaks, with Elders Jackie Yates, Toy Looney, Larry Puckett, Jerry Overstreet and A.B. Thacker officiating. Burial followed in the Rice and Slone Cemetery, Breaks.
  Active pallbearers were family and friends.

Howard Lee Daniels
(Home Creek)

  Howard Lee (Sandman) Daniels, 84, of the Home Creek section of Rt. 1, Grundy,, died Thursday, October 5, 2006 at his home following an extended illness.
  Born in Mingo County, WV, he was a son of the late Plez Sr. and Mary Dale Mullins Daniels. He had been a resident of Buchanan County several years and was a member of Home Creek Old Regular Baptist Church for some 53 years where he served as deacon, treasurer and trustee. He also served as clerk of the Elkhorn City Old Regular Baptist Church for 15 years. He served in the United States Navy during World War II, serving on the Naval Ship USS Arequipa in the Philippines as a petty officer. He received the American Area Victory World War II Philippine Liberation Asiatic Medals. He was owner and operator of Howard L. Daniels Sand Company, Inc. for 52 years, serving as president. He was a member of the Grundy IOOF Lodge No. 17, Veterans of Foreign Wars, where he served as a trustee, and the American Legion. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Pearl Hopkins, Anna Robertson, Julie Craft and Vicey Anderson; and six brothers, William, Henry, Charlie, Plez, Jr., John and Floyd Daniels.
  He is survived by his wife, Gladys Virginia St. Clair Daniels; one daughter, Anna Lee, and husband, Donald Dawson, of Rt. 1, Grundy; special niece, Linda Blankenship of Rt. 1, Grundy; several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Sunday, October 8 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Chapman, Evg. Michael Trent, Evg. Mike Rife and Elders Charles Wright, Larry Puckett and Kermit Wright officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock. Full military rites were held at the cemetery by members of John Ratliff Post No. 164 of the American Legion.
  Active pallbearers were nephews.
  Honorary pallbearers were the Honorable Judge Kerry R. Williams, Roby Raines, Richard Niece, Jim King, Ricky Fields, Joey St. Clair, Dr. Antonio Brollio, Iris Edwards, James Robert Hutchinson, Ralph McClanahan, Don Bentley, Otis Elswick, T.C. Mullins, Jr., Curtis Mullins, Sr., Dewey Looney and Hospice Division of Total Home Health Care.

Jacqueline Brown
(Keen Mountain)

  Jacqueline Stiltner Brown, 56, of Keen Mountain, died Wednesday, October 4, 2006 at her home.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of Noah Stiltner and the late Thelma Nelson Stiltner. She was of the Holiness faith.
  In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by one sister, Sandy Stiltner, and one granddaughter, Madison Sienna Brown.
  In addition to her father, she is survived by her companion of 23 years, Johnny Lee Coleman; two daughters, Erin Sword Foster and husband, Michael, of Harman and Sara Brown of Keen Mountain; seven sons, Brett Sword of Keen Mountain, Michael Brown and wife, Katrina, of Grundy, Brandon Coleman and wife, Tasha, of Keen Mountain, Jonathon Brown of Grundy, Ryan Brown and Blake Brown, both of Keen Mountain and Charles Sword and wife, Tammy, of Jewell Ridge; four sisters, Angela Owens and husband, Daryl, of Oakwood, Madeline Donovan and husband, Mike, of Worth, IL, Patsy Adkins and husband, Randal, of Phyliss, KY, Sharon Smith and husband, Jimmy, of Richlands; two brothers, Ronnie Stiltner and wife, Kim, of Bailey, NC and Jeffery Stiltner and wife, Edna, of Rosedale; seven grandchildren.
  Services were held Saturday, October 7 at Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel in Grundy with the Rev. Darrell Davis officiating. Burial followed in the the Stiltner's Creek Cemetery.
  Active pallbearers were Chris Stiltner, Robbie Stiltner, Kelly Smith, Matthew Woods, Anthony Adkins, Justin Lester, Aaron Marcum and Jimmy Penley.
  Honorary pallbearers were Charles Sword, Michael Brown, Ronnie Stiltner, Jeffery Stiltner, Randal Adkins, Daryl Owens, Jack McCoy, Michael Foster, Billy Skeens, Jimmy Sparks and Delph Skeens.

Bonnie Childress
(Grundy)

  Bonnie Jean Hamilton Childress, 72, of Grundy, died Friday, October 6, 2006 at Ridgecrest Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Duffield, following an extended illness.
  Born in Pike County, KY, she was a daughter of the late Oakley H. and Mimia Ward Hamilton. She had been a resident of the Grundy area most of her life and a member of Grundy Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Grundy High School, a former postmistress for the Royal City Post Office, and was a retired owner and operator of the former Army Surplus Store for several years.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald D. Childress, May 30, 1994, and one brother, Richard Hamilton, June 6, 2000.
  She is survived by one daughter, Deborah, and husband, Elbert Lester, of Big Rock; one son, Ronald Dean Childress, Jr. of Roanoke; two sisters, Opal Whitt of Grundy and Frances Lester of Roanoke; one sister-in-law, Analene and husband, Harold Reynolds of Virginia Beach; two granddaughters, Amanda and husband, Nathan Schier of Kernersville, NC and Alecia Mason-Childress of Roanoke; two step-grandchildren, Jason and wife, Kelly Lester of Abingdon and Brittany Lester of Blacksburg; two step-great-grandchildren, Kaden Lester and Carson Lester; and one great-grandson.
  Services were held Monday, October 9 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Howell Scott and Evgs. Mike Rife and Michael Trent officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Active pallbearers were Elbert Lester, Nathan Schier, Harold Reynolds, Dwayne Reynolds, Jason Lester, Frank Compton, Smitty Smith, Kyle Reynolds, Frank Spraker, Jr. and Ron Harszy.

  Roxie Lester Skeens, 84, of Abingdon, formerly of Buchanan County, died Sunday, October 8, 2006 at Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy following an extended illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Stella Wagner Lester. She was a resident of Buchanan County most of her life, a member of Grundy Baptist Church and  a homemaker.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace Skeens, August 13, 1992; two half-sisters, Mabel Davis and Gracy Ratliff; two half-brothers, Riddle and Homer Lester; and one great-grandchild, Tanner Haynes.
  She is survived by four daughters, Loudene and husband, Jimmy Dotson of Grundy, Betty McGlothlin of Bristol, TN and Darlene and husband, Johnny Boyd and Christine and husband, Arlie Boyd, all of Abingdon; one sister, Eunice Lester of Big Rock; two half-sisters, Rosa Jean Green of Grundy and Josephine Charles of Big Rock; one half-brother, Roy Lester of Big Rock; six grandchildren, Heather Suzanna Boyd of Atlanta, GA, Anthony and wife, Heather Boyd, of Abingdon, Tina Sheree and husband, Tom Stacy of Atlanta, GA, Kimberly Lynn Ramey of West Palm Beach, FL, Terrena Renee' and husband, Brian Haynes of Glade Springs and Lisa Michelle and husband, Todd Scarbrough of Melbourne, FL; nine great-grandchildren.
  Graveside rites were held Wednesday, October 11 at Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, with the Rev. Howell Scott officiating.
  Active pallbearers were Brian Haynes, Arlie Boyd, Jimmy Dotson, Tom Stacy, Anthony Boyd and Johnny Boyd.

Katrina May
(Stopover, KY)

  Katrina May, 39, of Stopover, KY, died Thursday, October 5, 2006 in Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport, TN.
  Born in South Williamson, KY, she was a daughter of Clell and Faye Daugherty Blankenship of Stopover. She was of the Pentecostal faith. She was owner/operator of Paw Paw Grocery Store at Paw Paw, near Hurley. She also assisted her husband, Tommy, with his business, Tommy May Trucking.
  She is survived by her husband, Thomas E. May; one son, Mitchell Allen May of Stopover; brothers, Arthur (Sabrina) Blankenship, Keith Blankenship, Dusty (Andrea) Blankenship and a special uncle that was like a brother, Ronnie Dean(Missy) Blankenship, all of Stopover; one sister, Teresa (Brad) Davis of Stopover; four nephews, three nieces.
  Services were held Monday, October 9 at Camp Creek Pentecostal Church with Ermal Fields, Harold Layne, Marvin Casey, Donnie Prater and E.C. Honaker officiating. Burial followed in the family cemetery at Camp Creek, Stopover.
  Pallbearers were family members and friends.

Elizabeth G. Owens
(Loganville, GA)

  Elizabeth Geraldine (Gerry) Bohon Owens, 74, of Loganville, GA, died Saturday, October 7 at Embracing Hospice Hospital, Snellville, GA, following an extended illness.
  Born in Princeton, WV, she was the daughter of the late William O. and Ruth Petry Bohon. She had resided in Buchanan County most of her life before moving to Abingdon upon retirement. Since November 2005, she had made her home with her son, Tim, and his family in Loganville. She had served as cafeteria manager for the Buchanan County Public School System at Garden High School and Elementary until her retirement. She was a member of Keen Mountain Methodist Church.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Charles "Chuck" Bohon, and step-mother, Agnes Hagy Bohon.
  She is survived by her brother, William "Bill" O. Bohon, Jr. and wife, Eva, of Hampton; two sons, George Andrew Owens, Jr. and wife, Debbie, of Abingdon and Tim Owens and wife, Pam, of Loganville; one daughter, Ruth Ellen Owens Elzey and husband, Tom, of Abingdon; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Tuesday, October 10 at Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel at Keen Mountain. Officiating at the services were the Rev.  Ancil Childress, the Rev. Jerry Ward and the Revs. Jerry and Olivia Wilson. Burial followed in Rest Haven Memorial Park Cemetery, Princeton.
  Pallbearers were Charles "Buzz" Bohon, Joe Bohon, Paul Bohon, Doug Harris, Mickey Chambers, Trey Owens and Owen Frye.
  Honorary pallbearers were Tom Elzey, Harold Creed, Roger Bohon, Cecil Holt, Leff Mabe, Gene Looney and Lindell Strunk.
  Buchanan Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

 

Carl Hobert Childress
(Mouthcard, KY)

  Carl Hobert Childress, 83, of Mouthcard, KY, died Tuesday, October 3, 2006 at Pikeville Medical Center, Pikeville, KY.
  Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late John Childress and Louisa Woods Childress. He was a World War II Air Force veteran and a retired coal miner from Kentland.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, George Childress, Claude Childress and Irving Childress.
  He is survived by his wife, Audrey Blackburn Childress, who he married November 7, 1947; and two sisters, Juanita Justice of Grundy and Ethel Myers of Mouthcard.
  Services were held Friday, October 6 at Bailey Funeral Home Chapel, Elkhorn City, with Ministers Frank Crum and Stan Parris officiating.  Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock. Graveside rites were held by D.A.V. Chapter 140 of Elkhorn

Sarah Delphia Robinson
(Birchleaf, VA)

  Sarah Delphia Robinson, 100, of Birchleaf, died Tuesday, October 3, 2006 in Clinch Valley Medical Center, Richlands.
  Born in Dickenson County, she was a daughter of the late Watson and Cassie Robinson Owens. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Garland Robinson; sons, Collin, Adrian, Rex, Fred, Dan, Frankie and Harold; and a grandson, Lance Ervin Meisequer.
  She is survived by three daughters, Audrey Owens of Tennessee, Jean (Ervin) Fuller of Pounding Mill and Netta (Richard) Meisequer of Florida; three sons, Leon (Elizabeth) Robinson of Castlewood, Bill (Doreen) Robinson and Mack (Verna) Robinson, both of Birchleaf; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Friday, October 6 at Haysi Funeral Home with Elders Mark Justice and Howard Daniels officiatiating. Burial followed in the Robinson Cemetery at Birchleaf.
  Pallbearers were grandsons.

Dolly C. Gordon
(Moncks Corner, SC)

  Dolly Coleman Gordon, 69, of Moncks Corner, SC, a former cashier for Food Lion, died Saturday in a North Charleston hospital.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Wallace and Ida Coleman. She was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church.
  She is survived by her husband, James O. "Jim" Gordon; one daughter, Susanne G. Smith and husband, Rick, of Surfside Beach; one son, James O. Gordon, Jr. and wife, Kim, of Linden, MI; two sisters, Oma Slone of Mt. Vernon, OH and Virginia Justice of Fenton, MI; three brothers, Lloyd Coleman and Wallace Coleman, both of Hurley and Ted Coleman of Fenton;  six grandchildren, Taylor Gordon, Brandon Smith, Devinne Gordon, Madison Smith, Emily Smith and Rylee Gordon.
  Services were Tuesday, October 10 in Gethsemane Baptist Church. Interment followed at Plantation Memorial Gardens.
  Memorials may be made to Gethsemane Baptist Church, 1446 State Rd., Summerville, SC 29483.

Mary C. Sullivan
(Bee, VA)

  Mary Catherine Sullivan, 96, of Bee, died Monday, October 9, 2006 at Heritage Hall in Clintwood.
  Born in West Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Floyd and Laura O'quinn. She was a homemaker and was of the Pentecostal faith. She was the last surviving member of her generation.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Morgan L. Sullivan, several brothers and sisters.
  She is survived by one son, Calvin (Marie) Sullivan of Bee; three daughters, Ellen Compton and Lorrine (Robert) Rasnake, both of Bee and Ellaine (Gene) Edwards of St. Louis, MO; 13 grandchildren, several great and great-great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Wednesday, October 11at Haysi Funeral Home with the Rev. Roy Lee Wilson officiating. Burial followed in Russell Memorial Cemetery in Lebanon.
  Pallbearers were grandsons.
  Haysi Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Edward H. Kiser
(Birchleaf, VA)

  Edward H. Kiser, 66, of Birchleaf, died Wednesday, October 4, 2006 at his home.
   Born in Dickenson County, he was a son of the late Hobart and Emma Sutherland Kiser. He served in the U.S. Army, was last employed as a miner and was of the Baptist faith.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie Kiser, and a son, Johnny Martin Edwards.
  He is survived by five daughters, Sandra (Jack) Yelvington of Palatka, FL, Clida Witt and Sherrel (Danny) O'quinn, both of Birchleaf, Ona Mae (Roy) Kiser of Bristol and Glenda (Bobby) Stanley of Haysi; one sister, Elsie Amburgey of Ohio; seven grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, two nieces and one nephew.
  Services were held Saturday, October 7 at Haysi Funeral Home with the Rev. Darrell Milgrim officiating. Burial followed in the Edwards-Powers Cemetery in Birchleaf.
  Pallbearers were grandsons and nephews.

Randy Carl Trammell
(Doran, VA)

  Randy Carl Trammell, 42, of Doran, died Sunday, October 8, 2006 at his home at Doran.
  Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Carl and Wilma Hagerman Trammell, both Buchanan County natives. He was a graduate of Jefferson High School in Jefferson, NC, a former coal miner and had worked as a pinner man and first responder. He was of the Old Regular Baptist faith and had spent most of his life in Buchanan County.
  He is survived by his wife, Deidre Trammell of Grundy; one daughter, Bobbie Trammell of Grundy; one son, James Foster of Grundy; two sisters, Kimberly Trammell and Amanda Keen, both of Grundy; three grandchildren, Dylan Ty Lester, Brent Trammell and Kylee Trammell.
  Services will be held today (Thursday), October 12 at 1 p.m. at North Springs Old Regular Baptist Church at Hurley with Ministers Josh Junior Justus, Danny Cooper Justus, Billy McCoy, James Stacey, Willis Conrad and other elders of the church. Interment will follow in the family cemetery on Slate Creek.
  Pallbearers will be friends and family.

Lue Ella Rasnake
(Pounding Mill, VA)

  Lue Ella Rasnake, age 78, of Pounding Mill, formerly of Drill, died Sunday, October 8, 2006 at the home of her daughter.
  Born in Richlands, she was a daughter of the late Marshall and Vinia Strouth Perkins. A lifelong resident of the area, she was of the Freewill Baptist faith.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Earl Rasnake; one son, Gary Rasnake; one daughter, Doris Gay Rasnake; five brothers, Junior Perkins, Buford Perkins, Benny Perkins, Rev. Edward Perkins, and Carlos Perkins; and one sister, Mattie Robertson.
  She is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Harrison and husband, Terry, of Pounding Mill, and Joyce Whited; two sons, Larry Rasnake and wife, Mary Lou, of Swords Creek, and Randy Rasnake of Richlands; one daughter-in-law, Linda Rasnake of Honaker; two sisters, Maggie Dye of Drill and Marcella Rasnake of Council; six grandchildren, Rhonda Gay Hale, Brad Baldwin, Leigh Collins, Kristen Rasnake, Derrick Rasnake, and Kim Rasnake; three great-grandchildren, Chace Collins, Seth Baldwin, and Eli Baldwin; several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Tuesday in Honaker with the Rev. Arvil Arwood officiating. Interment followed in the Rasnake Cemetery at Drill,.
  Pallbearers were Brad Baldwin, Kristen Rasnake, Roger Dye, Bobby Rasnake, James Darrell Rasnake, and Harvey Hess.
