Peggy Charles Matney
(Hurley)

  Peggy Charles Matney, 89, of Hurley, died Saturday, December 31, 2005 at Bristol Regional Medical Center.
  Born on Pounding Mill in Hurley, she lived her entire life in Buchanan County. She was a homemaker and a founding and active member of New Hope Christian Church in Grundy. She was the last surviving child of the late George W. Charles and Lydia Lester Charles.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Sherman H. Matney, February 4, 1985; her brothers, Kirby, Aldo, Carson and George Charles, Jr.; and sisters, Creola Parish, Ida Munson Harris, Martha Charles, Sr., Martha Charles Jr. and Margaret Stewart.
  She is survived by three sons, Douglas and wife, Connie Matney and David and wife, Debbie Matney, all of Grundy and Randall and wife, Laura Matney of Johnson City, TN; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Monday, January 2, 2006 at New Hope Christian Church with Evangelists Bill Neeley, Mike Rife and Mike Trent officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Active pallbearers were Donnie Compton, Rick Horn, Shane Horn, Rickey Lee, Timothy Lee, Roger McClana-han, Russell McClanahan, Chris Mitchell, Brian Rife, Jon Rife, Mike Thompson and Wayne White.
  Honorary pallbearers were William Bell, Charlie Ed-wards, Herb Fields, Mark Mutter, Bill Raines, Ronnie Stacy, Truman White and Brian Yates.

Mavis Fern Thomas
(Big Rock)

  Mavis Fern Ratliff Thomas, 61, of Big Rock, died Thursday, December 29, 2005 in Well-mont Bristol Regional Medical Center.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Hassell and Gracie Lester Ratliff. She was a life-long resident of Buchanan County, a member of Harman Freewill Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Terry Lee Ratliff, February 22, 2004, and one sister, Frances Ann Stiltner.
  She is survived by her husband, Clifford Thomas; five brothers, Russell Ratliff, and Bobby and wife, Nancy Ratliff, all of Grundy, Randy and wife, Connie Ratliff of Conaway, Paul and wife, Rita Ratliff of Big Rock and Roy David and wife, Tammy Ratliff, of Wardell; several nieces, nephews, uncles and aunts.
  Services were held Monday, January 2 at Harman Freewill Baptist Church at Maxie with the Revs. Ronnie Sliger, Eddie Wilson and Bobby Ratliff officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Active pallbearers were relatives and friends.
  Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
 


Juanita McGlothlin
(Vansant)

  Juanita McGlothlin, 67, of the Vansant area of Buchanan County, died Friday, December 30, 2005 at Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy, following an extended illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late William H. and Pearl Dales McGlothlin. She was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church and worked as a former butcher for Wrights Market, IGA Food Haven and Price Enterprises. She was a graduate of Grundy High School.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers.
  She is survived by four sisters, Etta Justice of Big Rock, Effie Looney of Floyd, Nell Branham of Richlands and Edith Deel of Altavista; and four brothers, Frank McGloth-lin of Grundy, Edd McGlothlin of Vermilion, OH, Jessie Mc-Glothlin of Kingsport, TN and Wallace Horn of Hopewell.
  Services were held Tuesday, January 3, 2006 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Ministers Raymond Lester, Paul O’Quinn and Johnny Cooper officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Active pallbearers were friends.
  Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
 


Lonnie Clevinger
(Maxie)

  Lonnie Clevinger, 89, of Maxie, died Friday, December 30, 2005 at Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy, following a brief illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Sylvester A. and Victoria Davis Clevinger. He was a member of Bull Creek Old Regular Baptist Church. He retired from Harman Mining Corporation with 47 years of service and achieved the longest continuous term of employment with Harman Mining. He was a member of UMWA Local Union 7025 and served with the U.S. Army during World War II.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son; two sisters, Ona Brown and Ethel Swanson; and four brothers, Lum, Bob, Kenneth and Rans Clevinger.
  He is survived by his wife, June K. Shortridge Clevinger; one son, David W. "Sonny" Clevinger and wife, Rita, of Maxie, Pat Ratliff and husband, David, of Maxie, Sue Delaney and husband, Everett of Looney’s Creek, and Vicki Corby of Sunrise, FL; eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Monday, January 2, 2006 at Bull Creek Old Regular Baptist Church with Elders Mark Justice, Roger Coleman, Howard Daniels and Roby Raines officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Pallbearers were David Delaney, John D. Clevinger, Ralph Clevinger, Randall Clevinger, Roby Raines and Ricky Rife.
  Honorary pallbearers were members of Bull Creek Old Regular Baptist Church, Nell Sutherland, Betty Sutherland, Gerald McClanahan, Andy Keen, Lonnie Keen and Henry Keen.

James Ersel Kidd
(Rt. 1, Grundy)

  James Ersel Kidd, 65, of Rt. 1, Grundy, died Thursday, December 29, 2005 at his home following an extended illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Robert and Nettie A. Ramey Looney Kidd. He had been a resident of Buchanan County most of his life, a member of Grundy Baptist Church and a graduate of Grundy High School. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Conflict. He was a former employee of the Kentucky American Water Company with nine years of service, Southwest Virginia Coal Corporation and Race Fork Coal Corporation for 10 years.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters and four brothers.
  He is survived by his wife, Charlene Raines Kidd; one daughter, Debra, and husband, Thomas Hackney of North Tazewell; one sister, Inez and husband, Ralph McClanahan, of Rt. 1, Grundy; one brother, Avern Kidd of Pikeville, KY; two grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Monday, January 2, 2006 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Ministers Larry David Ratliff and Eddie Hannah officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Active pallbearers were nephews.
  Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Clint Sutherland, Omar Bunn, Ervin Stiltner, Herb Fields, Ralph Perry, Charles M. Keene, Clayton Hill, Ken Hill, Ronald McClanahan, Lonnie Raines, Steve Raines, Paul Raines, Victor Mullins, Ernest Looney and Larry Looney.

John Goble
(Rt. 1, Grundy)

  John Goble, 87, of Rt. 1, Grundy, died Monday, January 2, 2006 at Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy.
  Born in Prestonsburg, KY, he was a son of the late Elijah and Pearlie Kendrick Goble. He had been a resident of Buchanan County most of his life and was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church. He served in the United States Army during World War II, in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe, and Ardannes and receiving the honors of EAME Theater Ribbon with five Bronze Stars per WD GO #33/45; Good Conduct Ribbon per 30 #132 Hq. 448th AAA Bn. 28 Sep. 43; Purple Heart per GO #532 Hq. 35th Div. 23 Nov. 44. He was retired from Corning Glass Works.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, John B. Lybarger; one sister, Lillie Cline; and eight brothers.
  He is survived by his wife, Molly Goble; three sons, George H. and wife, Linda Goble of Rt. 1, Grundy, Harry Lee and wife, Wanda Goble, of Morristown, Tn and Don D. and wife, Sandy Goble, of Alanson, MI; one sister, Dorothy Garrett of Jackson, OH; 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
  Services will be held today (Thursday), January 5 at 1 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Britt Jackson and James Chapman officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock. Full military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by members of John Ratliff Post No. 164 of the American Legion.
  Active pallbearers will be members of the American Legion.
  Honorary pallbearers will be Matt Lester, Tim Warrick and Jack Rife.

Johnny Parkis Colley
(Grundy)

  Johnny Parkis Colley, 64, of Grundy, died Monday, January 2, 2006.
  Born in Dickenson County, he was the son of the late James Karl Colley and Melster Mae Presley Colley. He was a member of Vansant Baptist Church where he served as deacon. He was retired from United Coal Corp. and had also been employed by Nichols Line Construction, attended Southwest Virginia Community College, and was a member of the Masonic Lodge #17 AF AM of Grundy.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers.
  He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Dorothy Helen Rife Colley; two daughters, Pam Clifton and husband, Steve, of Richmond and Kimberley Jennings and husband, Kenny, of Richlands; three sons, John Patrick Colley of Fredericks-burg, Christopher Lee Colley and wife, Melissa J. of Virginia Beach and Shannon Colley and fiance’, Amy Thompson, of Charleston, WV; one sister, Selma Owens of Haysi; and one brother, Elster Lee Colley of Narrows; 10 grandchildren.
  Services will be held today (Thursday), January 5, 2006 at 12 noon at Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel, Grundy, with the Rev. Stan Parris officiating. Burial will follow in the Colley Family Cemetery at Breaks.
  Active pallbearers will be his sons, John, Christopher and Shannon Colley, Steve Clifton, Adam Clifton, Kenney Jennings, Matthew Jennings, Ronnie Dotson and Stanley Stacy.
  Honorary pallbearers will be Johnny McCoy, Doug Lester, Joyce Blankenship, Linda Keene, Glen Smith, Freddie Hackney, James Childress, Ronnie and Donna Horn, Betty Street and employees of the Rainbow Restaurant.

Michael Scott Estep, Jr.
(Ray City, GA)

  Michael Scott Estep, Jr., 28, of Ray City, GA was killed in an industrial explosion accident in Palatka, FL Saturday, December 24, 2005.
  Born in Murfreesboro, TN, he was a son of Michael Scott Estep, Sr. and Eva Gay Musser Estep of Grayson, KY. He was a resident of Buchanan County several years, a graduate of Whitewood High School and served in the United States Army. He was a professional licensed blaster with Precision Blasting Company.
  In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Danette Charles Estep; two brothers, Kenneth Ray and wife, Angie Estep of Dixton, TN and William Edward Estep of Lenox, GA; one niece, Tracey Estep of Dixton, TN; three nephews, Brandon Vanover and Tyler Vanover, both of Vansant and Daniel Estep of Dixon; one brother-in-law, Todd Vanover of Vansant; several aunts, uncles and cousins.
  Services were held Monday, January 2, 2006 at Little David Old Regular Baptist Church at Prater with the Rev. John Charles and Elders Frank Newsome and Jerry Newsome officiating. Burial followed in the Charles Cemetery at Prater.
  Active pallbearers were family and friends.
  Honorary pallbearers were employees of Precision Blasting Company.

Dollie Adams Baker
(Clinchco, VA)

  Dollie Adams Baker, 84, of Clinchco, died Friday, December 30, 2005 at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, TN.
  Born in Pike County, KY, she was a daughter of the late Creed and Ethel Bartley Adams. She was a homemaker and was of the Old Regular Baptist faith.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arson Baker, July 6, 1988; two daughters, Merlene Baker and Ethel Mae Coleman; one son, Landon Baker; one sister, Dorothy Bentley; and five brothers, Basil, Ben, Earl, Dock and Carl Adams.
  She is survived by two daughters, Lorena Harrison and Reba (Carrol) Woods, all of Clinchco; three sons, Eddie Earl (Linda) Baker of Clinchco; Alfred Lee (Jane) Baker of Clintwood and Ervin (Cathy) Baker of West Land, MD; one son-in-law, James Coleman of Hammons, IN; one sister, Daisy Lee Coleman of Kemper, KY; one brother, Jackie Adams of Jacksonville, FL; 20 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Monday, January 2, 2006 at Haysi Funeral Home with Elders A.L. Yates officiating. Burial followed in the Viers Cemetery at Clinchco.
  Pallbearers were grandsons.

Franklin D. Cornette
(Bristol, TN)

  Franklin Delano Cornette, Ret., 72, of Bristol, TN, died Monday, December 26, 2005.
  He was retired military, serving with the U.S. Navy and was of the Protestant faith.
  He was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar and Clara Jones Cornette; one granddaughter, Claire Elizabeth Cornette; and two sisters, Norma Cornette Cole and Geraldine Riley.
  He is survived by his wife, Ruby Stacy Cornette; two sons, Frankin D. Cornette and wife, Rhonda Davis Cornette of Clarksburg, WV and Edgar E. Cornette of Bristol, TN; two brothers, Ronald Cornette and wife, Vivian, of Bristol, TN and Roger Cornette and wife, Glenna, of Portsmouth; several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Tuesday, January 3 in Akard Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Roy Hall officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Home National Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Bristol VFW Honor Guard.

Frieda N. Belcher
(Muncie, IN)

  Frieda N. Belcher, 71, of Muncie, IN, died Tuesday, December 27, 2005 at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie.
  Born in West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Cleva Landreth. She was a graduate of Grundy High School, was a homemaker and member of the Moose Lodge. She bowled on both the Senior Citizens League and the Moose Lodge League and was a member of WIBC.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert B. Belcher, in 1994; and two brothers, Ray and Phillip Landreth.
  She is survived by a son, Steve Belcher, and wife, Kathy, of Avon, IN; one daughter, Sherrita Murray of Muncie; three brothers, Dan Landreth and wife, Sue, of Muncie, Kim Landreth of Muncie and Dennis Landreth and wife, Pam, of New Paris, OH; three grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Friday, December 30 at Elm Ridge Funeral Home in Muncie with Pastor Brad Smith officiating. Entombment followed in Elm Ridge Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Marie Baldwin Malito
(Tinley Park, IL)

  Marie Baldwin Malito, 71, of Tinley Park, IL, formerly of Thorton, died Tuesday, December 20, 2005.
  She was the daughter of Bertha Payne Baldwin of Grundy and the late Eli Baldwin.
  In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond Baldwin and Harold Baldwin; one sister-in-law, Bertie Baldwin; and two brothers-in-law, Dennis Keene and Leon Keene.
  In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Michael J. Malito of Tinley Park; one son, Paul Guffey of Grundy; three sisters, Janice Keene and Brenda Keene, both of Grundy and Irene Allen of Johnson City, TN; two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Friday, December 23 at Edgar Funeral Home, Oak Lawn, IL, with the Rev. Patrick J. O’Neill officiating. Burial followed in the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Oak Lawn.

  Frank G. Hall, 77, of Elkton, MD, formerly of Hurley, died Saturday, December 31, 2005 in Elkton.
  He was employed as a custodian for over 35 years at General Motors Corp. in Wilmington, DE. He attended Maranatha Baptist Church in Elkton.
  He was preceded in death by his parents, Ulysses Hall and Bessie Smith Hall; his wife, Ida Edith Hall in 1994; one son, Daniel Hall; and one grandson, Robert Hall, Jr.
  He is survived by six sons, Frank G. Jr. and wife, Marianne, of Severn, MD, Ernest M. and wife, Kathy, and Donald M. Hall, all of Wilmington, DE, Robert G. Hall of Lansing, NC, Brian V. Hall of Canisteo, NY and David R. Hall of Bear, DE; two daughters, Edith Esther Sevier of Wilmington and Ruth E. Buckingham and husband, William, of Delta, PA; three brothers, James Hall of Bath, NY, Marty Hall of Florida and Arnold Hall of Deleware; two sisters, Beatrice Trent of Deleware and Ruby Grant of Elkton; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Wednesday, January 4, 2006 at Gee Funeral Home in Elkton. Interment followed in Elkton Cemetery following the service.
