Margie Irene Clevinger
(Grundy)

  Margie Irene Brown Clevinger, 77, of Grundy, died Saturday, December 30, 2006 at Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Garland and Inez Phipps Brown. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a member of Tookland Pentecostal Church since 1963. She was a homemaker and was employed as a sales clerk.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rhey Edward Clevinger, September 23, 1980; two sisters, Kathleen Willis and Lelia Fields; six brothers, John, Kelly, Roby, Coy, Vernie and James Louie Brown; two sons-in-law, Harvey Keen and Elder Roger Clevinger; and one grandson, Brian Keen.
  She is survived by four daughters, Judy Clevinger and Sheila and husband, Jeffrey O'Quinn, all of Grundy, Brenda and husband, Clyde Murphy, of Keen Mountain and Linda and husband, Gary Belcher, of Waco, NC; two sons, Ray and wife, Elaine Clevinger and Ronnie Lee and wife, Sandi Clevinger, all of Grundy; one twin sister, Josephine and husband, John Pruitt of Jewell Ridge; one brother, Troy and wife, Inez Brown of Springfield, OH; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Monday, January 1 at Grundy Funeral Home with the Rev. Rondal Parks and the Rev. Jerry Ward officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Active pallbearers were Dr. Roger Clevinger, Jr., Chris Clevinger, Michael Clevinger, Mark Keen, Craig Belcher, John Belcher, Marcus O'Quinn, Michael Helton, Drake Clevinger and Zachary Arnold Clevinger.
  Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Randolph Junior Jessee
(Oakwood)

  Randolph Junior "Randy" Jessee, 53, of Oakwood, died Wednesday, December 27, 2006.
  Born in Richlands, he was the son of the late Artemas and Trula Baldwin Jessee.
  He is survived by one son, Randolph Travis Jessee of Rowe; one sister, Kathleen Jessee Calhoun and husband, Roger, of Beaufort, SC; and one brother, Roy R. Jessee.
  Services were held Saturday, December 30 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel at Cedar Bluff. Burial followed in the Jessee Cemetery at Hansonville.
  Pallbearers were cousins, Terry Baldwin, Chris Campbell, Buddy Campbell, Joe Smith and Gary Wayne Rowe.
  Honorary pallbearers were Joe Griffith, Victor Edwards and Charles Duty.
  Singleton Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.


Helen June Ramey
(Grundy)

  Helen June Compton Ramey, 71, of Grundy, died Thursday, December 28, 2006 at Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy, following an extended illness.
  Born in Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Willard Compton and June Honaker Compton Mazusiak. She was a resident of Buchanan County several years and was of the Church of Jesus faith. She was a homemaker.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Ramey, September 28, 1993, and one brother, Paul Auburn Compton.
  She is survived by six daughters, Aurelia Matney of Rt. 1, Grundy, Candy Olgetree of Georgia, Patty Mullins of Jolo, WV, Shelia Carter of Oceana, WV, Charlene Looney of Statesville, NC and Portia Justus of York, SC; three sons, Bobby Ramey of Big Rock, Paul Ramey of Seagrove, NC and Michael Ramey of Randleman, NC; 19 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Sunday, December 31 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Clyde Dawkins officiating. Burial followed in the Potter Cemetery at the mouth of Looney's Creek, near Grundy.
  Active pallbearers were brothers-in-law and grandsons.
  Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Patty Marie Cole
(Grundy)

  Patty Marie Keen Cole, 47, of Grundy, died Friday, December 29, 2006 in Grundy following an extended illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late William David Keen and Marie Justice Keen Messer. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a graduate of Grundy Senior High School. She was a homemaker.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Flossie Ramey, Jean Lester and Gladys Looney; and four brothers, Agie Keen, Clyde Keen, Kelly Keen and Thomas Keen.
  She is survived by one son, Randall C.
  Cole of Grundy; three sisters, Pamelettia Spence of Grundy, Jackie Stiltner of Abingdon and Betty Prater of Lebanon; five brothers, Bobby Keene of Keen Mountain, Leroy Bevins of Steele, KY, Ronnie Keene of Abingdon, Elster Keen of Seattle, WA and Clayton Keen of San Francisco, CA.
  Services were held Tuesday, January 2 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evg. Mike Rife officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Active pallbearers were family and friends.
  Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Margie Ethel Mullins
(Grundy)

  Margie Ethel Honaker Mullins, 90, of Grundy, died Friday, December 29, 2006 in Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Flave Martin Honaker and Lilly Osborne Honaker. She was a member of Crossview Church of Christ and was a quilter, gardener and homemaker.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Esaw Mullins; two daughters, Noral Mae Ward and Carol Payne; one son, Eugene Mullins; one sister and three brothers.
  She is survived by three daughters, Norma Faye Mullins and husband, Edison, of Paynesville, WV, Darlene Thompson and husband, Jack, of Athens, WV and Sandra Bowden and husband, Dallas, of Wakefield; one son, Billy Joe Mullins and wife, Lola, of Grundy; one sister, Stella Mullins of Orlando, FL; and one brother, Walter Honaker of Grundy; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Tuesday, January 2 at Crossview Church of Christ, Paynesville, with Evg. Hobert Kennedy and Elder E.C. Honaker officiating. Burial followed in the Davis Cemetery on Davis Ridge, Grundy.
  Active pallbearers were family and friends.
  Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home, Grundy, was in charge of arrangements.


Ada Tiller Harris
(Council)

  Ada Tiller Harris, 83, of Council, died Saturday, December 30, 2006 in a Lebanon hospital.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Claude and Flora Meadows Tiller. A lifelong resident of the area, she was a member of the Free Christian Chuch on Big A Mountain. She was a retired cook with the Buchanan County School System, having been employed at Council Elementary School.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Sterling Harris; three sons, C.H. Harris, Bennie Harris and Woody Harris; one grandson, Jeff Harris; one sister, Irene Tiller; and four brothers, Harley Tiller, James Tiller, Virgil Tiller and Elmer Tiller.
  She is survived by one daughter, Virginia Boyd, of Honaker; two sons, Cecil Harris and wife, Nora Lee, of Rising Sun, MD and Darrell Harris and wife, Vickie, of New Harmony, IN; two sisters, Mae Miller and Marie Miller, both of Rising Sun; one brother, Reedy Tiller of Council; 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Wednesday in Honaker with the Revs. Roy Lee Wilson and Edward Tiller officiating. Interment followed in Russell Memorial Cemetery in Lebanon.
  Pallbearers were Eddie Harris, Jeremy Harris, Josh Harris, Steve Carter, Gary Boyd and Ricky Boyd.

Timothy Scott Elswick
(Tazewell, VA)

  Timothy Scott Elswick, 43, of Tazewell, died Thursday, December 28, 2006 at his home.
  Born in Richlands, he was a son of the late Herbert Jessie and Ruth Gwendolyn Messer Elswick. He had resided most of his life in the area and was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith. He was a 1981 graduate of Garden High School and was a coal miner, currently employed by Brooks Run Mining Company.
  He is survived by four sons, Christopher Jason Cox, Jessee Kyle Elswick and Corey Dean Elswick, all of Vansant and Jeremy Scott Elswick of Oakwood; three brothers, Harold Ray Elswick, and wife, Dolly, of Lebanon, Jessie Wayne Elswick and wife, Rethia, of Lexington, KY and Jamie Mark Elswick and wife, Shirley, of Duson, LA; four sisters, Glenna Dean Rose and husband, Tommy, of Oakwood, Patricia Ann Looney and husband, Paul, of Lorton, Shirley Beatrice Whitaker of Ft. Pierce, FL and Teresa Robin Thierry of Wise; one granddaughter, Emily Grace Lester of Grundy; numerous nieces and nephews.  
  Services were held Sunday in Honaker with the Rev. Arvil Arwood and the Rev. Jerry Wilson officiating. Interment followed in the Ball Cemetery on Road Ridge.
  Pallbearers were Lloyd David Sexton, Jr., Theo Whitt, Jody Rose, Mike Looney, Terry Looney and Stoney Hale.
  Honorary pallbearers were Larry Childress, Arland Childress, Chris Elswick and Mitch Elswick.


Earnest H. Large
(Abingdon, VA)

  Earnest H. "Sweat Bee" Large, 87, of Abingdon, died Friday, December 29, 2006 at his home.
  A native of Dickenson County, he was the son of the late Buddy and Ida Large. He retired from the mining industry following 45 years of service.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Fannie Large, three brothers and one sister.
  He is survived by his sons, Ken Large and wife, June, of Albertson, NC, Bobby Large and wife, Pat, of Abingdon, Charles Large and wife, Cindy, of Ocala, FL and James Large and wife, Carla, of Flatwoods, KY; daughters, Brenda Vanover and husband, Charlie, of Glade Spring, Joyce Silcox and husband, Jimmy, of Abingdon and Linda Austin and husband, Jeff, of Abingdon; three brothers, Raymond Large of Grundy, Denver Large of Branson, MO and Bill Large of Lebanon; one sister, Audrey Pape of Richmond; his long-term companion, Minnie Large; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Sunday, December 31 at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon with Paul Viers officiating. Entombment followed in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum at Forest Hills Memory Gardens.
  Pallbearers were grandsons.
  Farris Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.


Arlin Vandyke
(Marvin, VA)

  Arlin Vandyke, 71, of Marvin, died Wednesday, December 27, 2006.
  Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Josh and Edna Keen Vandyke. He was a United States Army veteran and a member of American Legion Post 164. He was a retired truck driver and was of the Pentecostal faith.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Madgie Merrittia Rife Vandyke; one infant daughter, Brenda Arlene Vandyke; three brothers, Gus Vandyke, Danny Vandyke and Hassel Vandyke; four sisters, Eunice Meadows and Ruby Vandyke and two infant sisters.
  He is survived by four brothers, Emory Vandyke and wife, Walsie, of Flint, MI, Frank Vandyke and wife, Bessie, of Contrary, Jimmy Vandyke and wife, Beulah, of Rt. 1, Raven and Donald Vandyke and wife, Gaynell, of Keen Mountain; one sister, Ruth Keen of Contrary; special niece, Alice Mae Meadows of Contrary; several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Saturday, December 30 at Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel, Keen Mountain, with the Revs. Ralph Horton and Ancil Childress officiating. Burial followed in the Esaw Rife Cemetery at Keen Mountain. Military graveside rites were conducted by John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion.
  Pallbearers were family and friends.

Allafair Turner
(Haysi, VA)

  Allafair Turner, 92, of the Backbone Ridge section of Haysi, died Monday, January 1, 2007 at her home following an extended illness.
  A resident of Dickenson County, she was the daughter of the late Robert Stanford and Minerva Mullins Turner. She was a supporter of the UMWA.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Yates; one grandson, Pat Viers; and son-in-law, William Deel.
  She is survived by one son, Ronny (Gloria) Turner of Haysi; four daughters, Loretta (George) Viers of Clinchco, Lois (Gene) Edwards of Vicksburg, MI, Thelma Vanover of Lorain, OH and Theda Deel of Sterling Heights, MI; grandchildren, Bobby Yates, Curt Viers, Terry Viers, Keith Viers, Nicole Willis, Theora Karns, Pam Foy, Jenny Edwards, Lynn Walters, Michelle Homler, David Vanover, Randy Deel, Jim Deel and Heather Blair; 27 great-grandchildren, 16 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Wednesday, January 3 at Haysi Funeral Home with Elders Carvel Edwards and Frank Newsome officiating. Burial followed in the Wilson Turner Cemetery on Backbone Ridge.
  Pallbearers were grandsons.
