Grundy
continued its resurgence on the mats in winning
twice
last week.
The
Golden Wave had seven wrestlers in the finals and
five
champions in rolling to the Big Orange Classic
title
over the weekend at William Byrd High School in
Vinton.
In
addition, Grundy had little trouble winning a
Southwest
District Quad Wednesday, routing Graham,
Tazewell
and Marion in action at Riverview
Elementary-Middle
School.
At
William Byrd, Grundy's champions included freshmen
Sean
Vandyke (103 pounds) and Jeremy Hurley (112),
sophomore
Ethan Owens (130) and seniors Josh McCowan
(152)
and Josh Lee (189). Freshman Tanner McClanahan
(160)
and senior Morgan Owens (215) reached the
championship
finals.
Grundy
finished 72 points in front of second-place
Franklin
County (268-196) in the final team standings
and
had 12 wrestlers place, including 11 who placed
third
or higher.
Derek
Anderson (119), Jon Dotson (135), Brandon
Hankins
(140) and Kaleb Smith (145) all reached the
championship
semifinals and wrestled back to place
third.
Freshman Cody Rife (125) lost in the first
round,
but battled his way back to place sixth.

Explodes to Earn Exciting 77-75 SWD Win at Graham

For
three quarters Grundy struggled to score.
In
the fourth quarter, scoring was the least of
Grundy's
problems.
The
Golden Wave scored an incredible 44 points in the
fourth
period and still barely got by Graham, 77-75,
in
Southwest District action Friday night at Graham
Middle
School in Bluefield.
The
final seconds were even wilder than the rest of
the
final quarter. Shawn Moore scored twice in the
final
30 seconds, tying the score at 73-73, and then
giving
Grundy a 75-73 lead. A Wave player was whistled
for a
technical foul for knocking the ball away after
Moore's
second bucket. Grundy had received a warning
earlier
for the same infraction.
J.D.
Hunter hit both technical free throws to tie the
score
at 75-75 with 8.3 seconds remaining. A Graham
player
called a timeout on the ensuing inbounds try,
but
the G-Men were out of timeouts, and that resulted
in a
technical foul on the Graham bench.
Bobby
Peck hit one technical free throw to give Grundy
the
lead, Cody Billiter added one free throw with 5.7
seconds
remaining to make it 77-75, and Graham missed
a
three-point try at the buzzer to cap a wild, wild
second
half.
