May Leads Rebels in 45-22 BDD Thumping of Council

Hurley held Council to single digits in all four quarters and picked up a Black Diamond District win over the Cobras, 45-22, Friday night at Council Elementary School.
In non-district action Monday, Ervinton upset Hurley, 53-46, in a battle of Rebels at Hurley High School.
Eric May scored the first eight Hurley points and the Rebels pulled away late in the first quarter to an 18-7 lead Friday at Council. Hurley led 24-10 at halftime and gradually pulled away from the struggling Cobras in the second half.
May finished with a game-high 17 points in the low scoring contest. Shane Shelton added 11 points for the Rebels.
No one scored in double figures for Council, which finished with its lowest point total since a 100-22 defeat at the hands of national champion Oak Hill Academy in a tournament in Bristol in December of 1998. Justin Fuller led the Cobras with eight points.
Ervinton went on a 14-6 run in the third quarter and took a 38-29 lead into the fourth-quarter Monday night at Hurley High School.
Adam Kiser led three Ervinton Rebels in double figures with a game-high 15 points. Luke Rasnick and Evan McCowan each added 12 points for Ervinton.
May scored 14 points and Socttie Hurley added 10 points for Hurley.

Panthers Remain Unbeaten in BDD With 63-33 Win Over Visiting Rebels

by Lloyd Combs
Sports Reporter

Twin Valley stayed unbeaten in the BDD with a surprisingly easy, 63-33, win over visiting Hurley last Tuesday (Jan. 16) at TVHS.
Twin Valley’s twin posts, Matthew Baldwin (18 points) and Josh Smith (13), combined for 31 points and 16 rebounds.
The 6-foot-7 Baldwin and Smith, a 6-3 freshman, combined to score the first 15 points for Twin Valley, which built a 22-8 lead in a slow-paced first half and never let its lead get below that 14-point margin.
“That’s the way we wanted to start the game,” Twin Valley coach Brian Moore said. “We wanted to take advantage of our size.
“We knew Eric May is a defensive force (for Hurley), so we wanted to work the paint early and get the paint established, and it worked out for us.”
Hobbled by a sprained ankle, the 6-foot-6 May was held to 13 points. He also pulled down 10 rebounds, but got little help inside.
The Rebels looked tentative offensively, turning the ball over 19 times and shooting just 28.8 percent (13-45) from the field.
“We can’t use (May’s injury) as an excuse,” Hurley coach Mark Cooper said. “We were passive, we didn’t attack the basket. We didn’t do what we set out to do.”
Twin Valley (10-3, 2-0) settled for a 24-10 lead in a slow-paced first half. Baldwin, Smith and Garrett Horne combined to lead an 8-0 run that extended the Panther advantage to 38-17 in the third quarter.
Virtually every Panther contributed to a 21-4 run that gave Twin Valley its largest lead, 63-28, late in the game.
