The
Southwest District race is back to normal.
Grundy
is back in the hunt in the SWD, where
first-place
ties and multi-team playoffs are the norm,
after
a dramatic, 68-66 district win last Tuesday at
Abingdon.
On
Monday, meanwhile, the Golden Wave picked up its
third
straight victory, 61-54, over Haysi in
non-district
play at Grundy High School
Bobby
Peck hit the game-tying and game-winning shots
in
the final minute to lift the Golden Wave past
Abingdon.
Peck tied the game with a stickback with 44
seconds
remaining and gave the Wave a 68-66 lead when
he
took a feed from Joseph Stephens and hit a layup
with
11 seconds left to play.
Peck
and D.J. Gelenster then smothered the Falcons'
Brandon
Ketron outside the three-point arc as time
expired.
Ketron was unable to get a potential
game-winning
shot away.
“Finishing
a close ballgame is something we really
stress
strongly at Grundy, because we feel like we’re
going
to be in a lot of close ones,” Grundy coach Greg
Rife
said after Tuesday's contest. “It paid off
tonight.”

Twin
Valley extended its season-high winning streak to
five
games with three wins last week.
The
Panthers kept sole possession of first place in
the
Black Diamond District with a 54-38 win Tuesday at
Hurley.
Twin Valley picked up a pair of non-district
wins
at home, pounding Graham, 61-34, on Wednesday,
and
pulling away in the second half to a 58-46 victory
over
St. Paul on Saturday.
Despite
what Panther coach Brian Moore termed a subpar
performance,
Twin Valley also managed to pull away
from
upset-minded Hurley in the second half last
Tuesday.
A
14-5 run in the third quarter gave the Panthers
(11-6,
3-0) a 40-26 lead. Ten different players
reached
the scoring column, but just one reached
double
figures for Twin Valley. Jory Rife scored 10
points,
while Josh Smith tallied nine points.
Matthew
Justus led Hurley (6-11, 1-3) with a game-high
11
points. Nathan Dotson added nine points for the
Rebels.
