Blonnie Pack
(Roseann)

  Wilma Blonnie New Pack, 61, of the Rt. 1 Roseann section of Buchanan County, died Wednesday, January 10, 2007 at her home following an extended illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late John Delbert New and Lula M. Young New Justus. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a member of the body of Christ. She was a homemaker.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her step-fathers, Preston O'Connor and Ed Justus; one daughter, Nina May; and one sister, Nancy Coleman.
  She is survived by her husband, Junior Pack; two daughters, Denise Pack of Hurley and Kathy and husband, Paul Vandervennen of Grandville, MI; three sons, Chris and wife, Angie Pack, of Hurley, Terry and wife, Teresa Pack of Lincolnton, NC and Tonnie and wife, Anna Pack of Roanoke; three sisters, Cathy and husband, Larry Justice of Hurley, Mildred Blankenship of Freeburn, KY and Della Mae Coleman of Lincolnton; one brother, James "Jimmy" New of South Carolina; nine grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
  Services were held Saturday, January 13 at Clark Memorial Presbyterian Church near Roseann with the Rev. Donnie Prater, the Rev. Donnie Estep and the Rev. Tommy Conn officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Active pallbearers were family and friends.
  Honorary pallbearers were David Brown, Dr. Pillia and staff, Dr. J.P. Sutherland, Jr., and Patty Auville with Total Home Care and Hospice.
 
Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

John William Love
(Grundy)

  John William Love, 81, of Grundy, died Monday, January 8, 2007 at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Grundy.
  Born June 25, 1925, he was the son of the late William M. Love and Mary Francis Williams Love. He was a former resident of the Baxter House.
  He is survived by one brother, Raymond Love, of Salem.
  Graveside services were held Friday, January 12 at Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill, with Randy Tedford officiating.
  Pallbearers were friends.

Wanda Sue Thompson
(Davenport)

  Wanda Sue Duty Thompson,  53, of Davenport, died Wednesday, January 10, 2007 in a Richlands hospital.
  Born in Duty, she was a daughter of Bobby Duty of Davenport and the late Helen Pearl Musick Duty. A lifelong resident of the Buchanan County area, she attended Duty Church of God. She was a former employee of Honaker Mills.
  In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Thompson, and two brothers, Darrell Duty and Dallas Duty.
  In addition to her father, survivors include one sister and brother-in-law, Darlene and Dennis Thomas of Rosedale; one brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Sue Duty of Davenport; several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Saturday in Honaker with Rev. Roy Lee Wilson officiating. Interment followed in the Duty Cemetery at Bee.
  Pallbearers were Giles Musick, Harmon Musick, Marcus Harris, Richard Duty, Randall Duty, Stacy Duty, and Scotty Duty.

Memphis T. Vandyke
(Vansant)

  Memphis T. "Shorty" Vandyke, 80, of Rt. 2, Vansant, died Thursday, January 11, 2007 at Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy, following a brief illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Bennie and Rosie Street Vandyke. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a member of Dry Fork Primitive Baptist Church. He was retired from the coal mining industry, being the owner/operator of Vandyke Brother's Coal Company.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Jerry L. Vandyke, May 5, 1977; two sisters, Inis Cline and Freida Yates; and three brothers, Buddy, Clyde and Ray Vandyke.
  He is survived by his wife, Betty Jo Lewis Vandyke; one daughter, Ginger and husband, Jerry L. Merritt of Santee, SC; four sisters, Cleo and husband, Auburn Ratliff, of Vansant, Gay Jewell of Williamsburg and Jean Goff and Nola Everson, both of Atlanta, GA; two brothers, Virgil and wife, Annalee Vandyke and Harold and wife, Betty Vandyke, all of Vansant; three grandchildren, Teresa Coleman of Vansant, Todd Vandyke of Lexington, SC and Megan Newberry of Marion; five great-grandchildren
  Services were held Sunday, January 14 at Dry Fork Primitive Baptist Church at Vansant with Elders Jeff Dotson, Shawn Dotson and Garnell Gilbert officiating. Burial followed in the Dry Fork Community Cemetery on Baldwin Mountain near Vansant.
  Active pallbearers were Bob Wyatt, Eric Coleman, Bradley Vandyke, Craig Vandyke, Mitchell Vandyke and Harold Cline.
  Honorary pallbearers were Jerry Merritt, Max Lewis, Roger Deel, Ralph Street, Roger Street, Dr. J.G. Patel and Michael Lewis.
  Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Clovis Deel
(Vansant)

  Clovis Deel, 79, of Vansant, died Thursday, January 11, 2007 at his home.

Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late William Alden and Lilia Charles Deel. He was a retired coal miner and a member of Bartlick Freewill Baptist Chuch.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Edson Lee Deel; one daughter, Susie Deel; one grandson, Matthew Steven Deel; and one brother, Tollie Deel.
  He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Deel; three daughters, Betty Boyd of Vansant and Patsy Bowman and Sherry Boyd, both of Birchleaf; four sons, Steve Deel of Vansant, Lynn Deel of Birchleaf, Louie Deel of Clinchco and Larry Deel of Nora; four sisters, Margie Lowe and Estelle O'quinn, both of Vansant, Ruby Long of Tennessee and Jerleen Epling of Glade Springs; one brother, Burlin Deel of Clintwood; 23 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Sunday, January 14 at Haysi Funeral Home with Junior Deel and James Sweeney officiating. Burial followed in the Deel Cemetery at Birchleaf.
  Pallbearers were family and friends.
  Haysi Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Vilie Boyd
(Pilgrim's Knob)

  Vilie (Leona) Boyd, 84, of Pilgrim's Knob, died Sunday, January 14, 2007 in Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy, following an extended illness.
  She was the daughter of the late William and Matilda Keen Horn.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Boyd; five brothers, Otis Horn, Thelmer Horn, Linkous Horn and Claude B. Horn; and infant brother, Raymond Horn.
  She is survived by three sisters, Gussie Mullins of Pilgrim's Knob, Arizona Cole of Port St. Lucie, FL and Laquetta Addison of Luray; one special nephew, Randy Horn of Pilgrim's Knob; four special nieces, Patty Lester and husband, Vester, of Pilgrim's Knob, Kathy Horne and husband, John, Patsy Looney and Peggy Horn, all of Clifton Fork; one special sister-in-law, Geneva Horn Mitchell and husband, Jennings, of Clifton Fork; two special great nephews, two special great nieces.
  Services will be held today (Thursday), January 18 at 1 p.m. at Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel at Keen Mountain with the Rev. Jack Ward and the Rev. Robert Shortt officiating. Burial will follow in the Antioch Cemetery at Keen Mountain.
  Pallbearers will be family and friends.
  Buchanan Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Dennis Ward
(Red Ash, VA)

  Dennis Ward, 76, of Red Ash, died Tuesday, January 9, 2007.
  Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Sidney Grant and Carrie Stevenson Ward. He was a retired coal miner from Island Creek Coal Co. Beatrice Mine and was a member of UMWA Local 1374. He was a member of Premier Full Gospel Temple Church at Red Ash.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Rebia Percellia, Bethel Prater, Lydia Ward, Ellen Taylor, Exie Ward and Margie Ward; brothers, Ben, Burl, Sherman and Edward Ward; baby daughter, Carrie Louise Ward; and two infant sons.
  He is survived by his wife, Maxine Ward; two daughters, Robin Ferrell and husband, Bobby, of Raven and Mary Lou Ward of the home; two sons, Charles Ward and wife, Rita, of Clifton Fork and Dennis Wayne Ward and wife, Sharon, of Raven; one brother, the Rev. Thomas Ward and wife, Vicki, of Pilgrim Knob; grandchildren, Todd Ward, Ethan Ward, Katie Ward, Kevin Ward, Nathan Ferrell, Sarah Beth Miller and Joshua Ward; and great-grandchildren. Services were held Friday, January 12 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel, Cedar Bluff, with the Rev. Shane Breeding, the Rev. Buddy Herald and the Rev. Randy Webb officiating. Burial followed in Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery in Richlands.
  Pallbearers were grandsons.
  Honorary pallbearers were men of Premier Full Gospel Temple Church.
  Singleton Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.


Charles Hughes Hoss
(Bristol, VA)

  Charles Hughes Hoss, 90. of Bristol, VA, died Tuesday, January 9, 2007 in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
  Born in Washington County, he was a son of the late Melvin Hugh and Lacy Ella Hoss. He had resided all his life in Bristol and was a retired truck driver for VDOT. He attended Beaver View Baptist Church and was a 32nd degree Mason.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nevada Annie Hoss; and one daughter, Reba Hoss Holzhauer.
  He is survived by daughters, Keta Hawley and husband, Wayne, Carolyn Custer and husband, Tom,  and Linda Beale and husband, Frank; one son, Donald Hoss; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Friday, January 12 at Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Scott Taylor officiating. Burial followed in Mountain View Cemetery.
  Pallbearers were Shawn Custer, Eric, Haga, Tony Hoss, Donnie Hoss, Brent Hawley, Mike Noell,  Brad Haga and Lonnie Long.
  Honorary pallbearers were Wilburn White, Joe Clark, Sam Keith, Fred McCroskey and Dennis Hoss.
  Weaver Funeral Home, Bristol, TN, was in charge of arrangements.

Johnny James Elswick
(Mouthcard, KY)

  Johnny James Elswick, 70, of Mouthcard, KY, died Friday, January 12, 2007 in an Elkhorn City Nursing Home.
  Born in Pike County, KY, he was the son of the late Ernest Elswick and Draxie Cantrell Elswick. He was a member of the Mouthcard Baptist Church, was a U.S. Army veteran and a retired truck driver.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, James Trevor Elswick; one granddaughter, Rachell Leonard; and one step-grandson, David Justice.
  He is survived by one daughter, Tiffany Haney and husband, Mike, of Ashland, KY; one step-son, Rick Justice and wife, June, of California; one granddaughter, Mara Camille Haney; and one step-grandson, Andrew Justice.
  Services were held Sunday, January 14 at Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel, Grundy, with Rev. Joe Tuttle officiating. Full military graveside rites were conducted by John Ratliff Post of the American Legion, Monday, January 15, at Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Active pallbearers were family and friends.
