WAVE SOPHOMORE Morgan
Owens (top) awaits the referee’s signal for a pinfall during the
160-pound match of Saturday’s SWD wrestling opener at Riverview
Elementary-Middle School. Owens, who pinned his Carroll County
opponent Ronald Puckett in 1:50, was one of five Grundy
wrestlers to win by fall as the Wave lost just one match to the
Cavaliers.

Grundy Tops Carroll County in SWD
Wrestling Opener, 59-15 |
|

|
Grundy won at home for the second
time in a row, this time in a Southwest District dual meet,
topping Carroll County, 59-15, in the SWD opener for the Golden
Wave wrestling squad Saturday at Riverview Elementary-Middle
School.
Grundy, which competes in the
Virginia Duals this weekend, lost two matches by forfeit and just
once on the mat, and that loss was the first of the season for
Wave freshman sensation Derek Anderson, who moved up from 103 to
112 pounds to wrestle one of the Cavaliers’ best, Zach Schuster,
who took a slim, 8-5 decision.
“We tried to get Derek a tougher match than
what he’d had (at 103),” Grundy wrestling Coach Travis Fiser said.
“I thought he needed to get challenged before the Duals. He’s the
one who starts it off for us at 103 and that was (Carroll
County’s) best kid.
“Otherwise, I don’t think the guys
really got tested. It was just a matter of coming out and
wrestling hard. I thought we did that, though the heavyweight
match was closer than I thought it would be. We were still able to
get the victory. The score made it look closer than what it really
was.”
Andy Stiltner won a 5-3 decision over the
Cavs’ Drew McCraw at heavyweight.
Five Grundy wrestlers won by
fall. Three (Kris Stiltner, Demarco Owens and Matt Stiltner)
pinned their respective opponents in under a minute.
Four of them (including Morgan
Owens) won in the first period. Jarrett Landis (135 pounds) pinned
his man (Lewis Lemus) in 3:30.
Brandon Hankins (125) and Josh
McCowan (145) won by 17-0 tech falls. Patrick Yates (103) won a
15-6 major decision over Kersten Quesen-berry. Jerami Bartley
(152) and Josh Lee (189) won by forfeit.
Grundy wrestles North
Wilkes and Alleghany High Schools in Sparta, N.C., starting at
6:00 p.m.
Wednesday and wrestles at
5:00 p.m. Friday against First Colonial in the Virginia Duals at
Hampton Coliseum.
A win in the duals sends
the Wave back out on the mats at 9:00 p.m. Friday. A first round
loss in the American High School Division and Grundy wrestles
early Saturday morning (8:00 a.m.).

Lady
Panthers
Get
Revenge
In 53-50
OT Win at
Grundy

Sports Reporter
It was deja vu at the end of regulation, but a much better repeat
performance in overtime for Twin Valley.
The Lady Panthers hit just enough free
throws at the end to upset Grundy, 53-50, in overtime in
non-district play Thursday night at Riverview Elementary-Middle
School.
Also last week, Twin Valley held off
Richlands, 52-40, in a non-district contest at TVHS.
Thursday’s win avenged the Lady
Panthers’ 61-57 overtime loss to the Lady Wave the previous week
at Twin Valley. Both then and Thursday, Twin Valley got,
but missed, the final shot of regulation in a tie game.
It was the same scenario in
Thursday’s extra period, which made the third such opportunity
something of a charm for the Lady Panthers, despite three missed
free throws.
The score was tied at 48-48 in OT
when Twin Valley’s Brittany Maxwell drove to the basket and drew a
foul with 22 seconds remaining. Maxwell hit one of two free throws
and was 4-of-6 at the line overall in the waning seconds.
Fortunately for the Lady Panthers, Tiffany Watson and Nikki
Honaker grabbed offensive rebounds off Maxwell’s two misses.
Grundy got within 51-50 on two free
throws by Ashley Cook with 9.2 seconds remaining. Maxwell, who
scored a game-high 27 points, added one free throw at the 8.2
second mark.
Maxwell missed the second try,
but Honaker hit the boards, drew a foul and hit one of two free
throws with 6.6 seconds left. The Golden Wave missed a desperation
shot just before the buzzer.
Maxwell started 25-of-26 at the
line at one point this season, but was part of a 15-of-28 team
effort on Thursday.
“If we had hit our free throws
earlier, I thought we would have had it under control pretty
good,” Twin Valley Coach Terry Maxwell said. “But sometimes, I
guess it’s better to be lucky than good.”
The Lady Panthers never trailed
during a stretch from late in the second quarter until a bucket by
Brooke Shepherd in the first minute of overtime.
Grundy forced OT with a
free throw by Samantha Rice with 24 seconds remaining in
regulation.
