Kay Anita Vance
(Hurley)

  Kay Anita Vance, 65, of the Wolfpen section of Hurley, died Wednesday, January 4, 2006 at Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Chaney and Essie Stacy Justus. She was a homemaker.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, James Vance, and one sister, Betty Hogston.
  She is survived by her husband, Bobby Vance; one son, Terry Vance of Wolfpen; one daughter, Mrs. Chris (Elizabeth) Childress of Grundy; two sisters, Mary Church Baker of Wolfpen and Della Bandy of Hurley; two brothers, Jimmy Justus of Vansant and Joseph Justus of Home Creek; one grandson.
  Services were held Saturday, January 7 at Word Evangelistic Outreach Church with Evg. Mike Rife and the Rev. James Chapman officiating. Burial followed in the McClanahan Vance Cemetery at Rt. 1, Grundy.
  Pallbearers were Richard, Ronnie, Dwayne, Marvin and Bruce Vance, Kenny McClan-ahan, Larry Murphy, William and Darvel Bandy.
  Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Clinton Sutherland, Robert McClanahan, Lonnie Vance, Dean Murphy, Doug Dawson, Roy Stacy, Billy Laney, Mark Daniel, Ricky Church, Trampis Church, Jimmy Justus, Joseph Justus and Chris Childress.
  Virginia Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
 


Jerry Randall Ratliff
(Council)

  Jerry Randall Ratliff, 50, of Council, died Thursday, January 5, 2006 in Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy.
  Born in Council, he was a son of the late Luther Eulis and Ruth Johnson Ratliff. He had spent most of his life in Ohio and was a carpenter, coal miner, landscaper and musician.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Eulis Ratliff, and one infant sister, Joyce Ratliff.
  He is survived by three sons, Dwayne Lykins, Cody Ratliff and Jared Ratliff, all of West Liberty, KY; four brothers, Benny Ratliff and Tim Ratliff, both of Council, Guy Ratliff of Springfield, OH and Pete Ratliff of Fairborn, OH; four sisters, Linda Tiller of Honaker, Mildred Boyd of Bee, Lois Bourne of Fairborn, OH and Wanda Hornback of Beaver Creek, OH; several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Saturday in Honaker with the Revs. Roy Lee Wilson and Jerry Counts officiating. Interment followed in the Johnson Cemetery on Combs Ridge.
 


Danny Lee Shortridge
(Dismal)

  Danny Lee "D.J." Short-ridge, 26, of the Dismal section of Buchanan County, died Wednesday, January 4, 2006 in Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy.
  Born in Grundy, he was the son of Danny and Kathy Lynn Deel Shortridge of Fletcher’s Ridge. A lifelong resident of Buchanan County, he was employed as an equipment operator for Western Construction. He was a member of Rowe Pentecostal Holiness Church.
  He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Clarence and Betty Short-ridge; paternal great-grandparents, Will and Cora Shortridge; and one uncle.
  In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Misty Shortridge; one son, Cameron Lee Shortridge of the home; one sister, Faith Lynn Shortridge of Fletcher’s Ridge; maternal grandparents, Lee and Alice Deel of Vansant; paternal step-grandmother, Patty Shortridge of Rogers-ville, TN; paternal step-great-grandmother, Bertha Short-ridge of Rowe; several aunts, uncles and cousins.
  Services were held Sunday at Rowe Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Revs. Ancil Childress, Tommie Deel and James Tiller officiating. Interment followed in the Shortridge Cemetery at Rowe.
  Pallbearers were Darrell Blankenship, Jr., Matthew Ratliff, Elwood Dykes, Dustin Yates, Glen Blankenship and Kevin Matney.
  Honorary pallbearers were Terry Deel, Jerry Allen Ramey, Michael McCoy, Ross Clifton, Jerry Meadows, Terry Short-ridge, David Smith, Gregory Shortridge, Mark Street, Billy Meadows, Michael Dales and employees of Western Construction.
  Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of donations to the Danny Shortridge Memorial Fund at any Tru-Point Bank.
 


Janice Stiltner
(Maxie)

  Janice Bingham Stiltner, 84, of Maxie, died Friday, January 6, 2006 at her home following an extended illness.
  Born in Elkhorn City, KY, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Lula Rowe Bingham. She had been a resident of Buchanan County most of her life and was of the Baptist faith. She was a former owner of Hazel’s Steak House, a former employee of Willowbrook Country Club and Weller Yard Club House.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mark Huelous Stiltner, October 26, 1981; five sisters, Lenore Ramey, Lillian Wright, Nancy Louise Wheat-ley, Ilene Bingham and Kitty Sue Bingham; and three brothers, Paul Bingham, Bobby Bingham and Neal Gray Bingham.
  She is survived by one daughter, Deborah Lynn, and husband, Robert Nitz, of Parkersburg, WV; two sisters, Norma Akers of Polk City, FL and Betty Davis of Lakeland, FL; and two grandchildren, Pamela and Tiffany Burks.
  Services were held Monday, January 9 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Ronnie Sliger and Eddie Wilson officiating. Burial followed in Mudlick Cemetery at Maxie.
  Active pallbearers were Jerry Nickels, Darnell Green, Bob Nitz, Richard Stiltner, Virlo Stiltner Jr. and Larry Cox.
  Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
 


Gary Adkins
(Pounding Mill)

  Gary Adkins, 59, of Pounding Mill, died Friday, January 6, 2006 in a Richlands hospital following an extended illness.
  Born in Pikeville, KY, he was the son of the late Raymond and Mignon Potter Adkins of Morristown, TN. He was a member of the Poplar Creek Church of Christ, was a 1968 graduate of Pikeville College, received a master’s degree from VPI, was a retired school teacher for the Buchanan County School System with 30 years of service and was past Master in the Cedar Bluff Masonic Lodge #260 AF&AM.
  In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Bonnie Deel Adkins; two sisters, Diana Taylor of Grundy and Nina Phillips of Indianapolis, IN; one brother, Jeff Adkins of Lexington, KY.
  Services were held Monday, January 9 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel, Cedar Bluff, with Evg. Mike Trent and the Rev. Gerald Stacy officiating. Burial followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill.
  Pallbearers were faculty of Riverview Elementary-Middle School.
  Honorary pallbearers were Thomas Stiltner, Edward Matney, Jerry Compton, Michael Stiltner and Ronnie Potter.
  Singleton Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
 


Donald Thurman Price
(Vansant)

  Donald Thurman Price, 61, of Rt. 2, Vansant, died Sunday, January 8, 2006 at Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol, TN, following an extended illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of Lizzie Compton Price Ennis of Kingsport, TN and the late Ed Price. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and was a retired coal miner.
  In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Ann Allen and Wanda Price; two sons, Donald Thurman Price and Donnie Ray Price; and one grandchild, Amber Dawn Bailey.
  In addition to his mother, he is survived by his fiance’, Linda Lou Price of Vansant; five daughters, Patricia and husband, Warren Epling of Big Rock, Tina and husband, Brian Keen of Oakwood, Tabitha and husband, Rodney Hardin of Hurley, Sharon and husband, Randy Bailey, of Panther, WV and Lisa and husband, Dennis Swiney, of Roanoke ; one son, Jason Boyd of Vansant; one sister, Brenda Ennis-Ramirez of Kingsport, TN; three brothers, David Ennis of Kingsport, Rocky Ennis of Church Hill, TN and Raymond Ennis of Atlanta, GA; 15 grandchildren.
  Services will be held today (Thursday), January 12, at 1 p.m. at Harman Memorial Baptist Church with Pastor Shea Shrader and the Rev. Bobby Stanley officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Active pallbearers will be Dennis Swiney, Brian Keen, Rodney Hardin, Warren Epling, Dillon Swiney, Travis Price, Tanner Billiter and Lloyd Yates.
  Honorary pallbearers will be Eugene Compton, Ronnie Compton, Floyd Yates, Johnny Yates, Lonnie Yates, Dr. Vish and Dr. J.G. Patel.

Larry R. Justus
(Lester’s Fork)

  Larry R. Justus, 56, of the Lester’s Fork section of Rt. 1, Grundy, died Monday, January 9, 2006 at his home following an extended illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of Ethel Belcher Justus of Rt. 1, Grundy and the late Raymond Earl Justus. He was a life-long resident of Buchanan County, a member of Hurley Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon, was a graduate of the Hurley High School class of 1967 and a graduate of East Tennessee State University. He was former owner of Just Us Coal Corporation and a disabled coal miner.
  In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Donna Sue Lester Justus; one step-daughter, Priscilla Lester of Hurley; one step-son, Benjamin Estep of Grundy; three brothers, Al and wife, Cheryl Justus, Ricky and wife, Gail Justus and Danny Justus, all of Hurley; two grandchildren, two nieces and three nephews.
  Services were held Wednesday, January 11 at 7 p.m. at Hurley Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Curtis Stacy officiating. At the request of Mr. Justus, his remains were cremated.
  Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of donations to the Hurley Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 68, Wolford, VA 24658.

Corina Elswick Nuckles
(Warrenton, VA)

  Corina Elswick Nuckles, 67, of Warrenton, died at her home Friday, January 6, 2006.
  Born in Vansant, she was the daughter of the late John and Hettie Elswick. She had been a bakery manager for Giant Food for 18 years.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Beecher, Bernard and Johnny Elswick; and four sisters, Gladys Solene, Faye Ramey, Nell Whitt and Arbutis Baldauf.
  She is survived by her husband, Donald Lee Nuckles, Sr.; one son, Donald Lee Nuckles, Jr. of Culpeper; one daughter, Regina Nuckles Frazier, of Warrenton; four grandchildren and one great-grandson.
  Services were held Tuesday, January 10 at Moser Funeral Home Chapel, Warrenton. Interment followed in Bright View Cemetery.
  Moser Funeral Home, Inc. was in charge of arrangements.
 


Joe Carter Arrington
(Haysi, VA)

  Joe Carter Arrington, 67, of Haysi, died Thursday, January 5, 2006.
  Born in Dickenson County, he was the son of Bertha Deel Arrington and the late Robert (Bob) Arrington. He was a 1957 graduate of Haysi High School, was a retired driver of 28 years for Pet Milk, was a business owner of Arrington Floral and Music for 23 years and was currently employed as a school bus driver for the Dickenson County school system. He played music with the Bluegrass Travelers for the past eight years.
  In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Jama Arrington; one daughter, Donna Schatzberg, and husband, Bob, of Tampa, FL; one son, Joe C. Arrington, Jr. and wife, Alyson, of Bristol, TN; one brother, Paul P. Arrington of Haysi; one sister, Nancy Goodwin of Abingdon; three grandsons and one granddaughter.
  Services were held Sunday, January 8 at Haysi Funeral Home with Alan Viers officiating.
  Pallbearers were Joe Carter Arrington, Jr., Randy Looney, Jr., Johnny Goodwin, Jason Arrington, Hansel Edwards and Jim Viers.
  Honorary pallbearers were Fred O’Quinn, Alfred Hall, Keith O’Quinn, Kyle O’Quinn, Frank Edwards and Louie Looney.
  Haysi Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
 


Ruth Evelyn Messer
(Raven, VA)

  Ruth Evelyn Steele Messer, 79, of Raven, died Saturday, January 7, 2006 in a Richlands hospital following a brief illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late George W. and Pearl Keen Horn, both Buchanan County natives. She had made her home in Buchanan and Tazewell counties all of her life and was well-known for her molasses stack cakes.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Kermit Quinton Steele; one son, Roger Steele; one sister, Martha Ellen Horn; and three brothers, Edward, Andrew and Hayes Horn.
  She is survived by her husband, Carter G. Messer; two daughters, Judy Steele Horne (Roy) of Claypool Hill and Tamara Steele Altizer and husband, Bill, of Midlothian; two sons, Bob Steele of Steelesburg and Donald Steele of Wytheville; three sisters, Beatrice Keene and Beulah Vandyke, both of Contrary and Betty Horne of Wytheville; three brothers, Charles Horn of Grand Prairie, TX and Clyde Horn and Leonard Horn, both of Claypool Hill; six grandchildren.
  Services were held Wednesday, January 11 at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Revs. Jack Ward and Rick Whitt officiating. Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill.
  Pallbearers were Evans Horne, Tim Gilbert, Greg Keene, Scotty Horne, Ronnie Horn and Alan Vandyke.
  Hurst-Scott Funeral Home, Richlands, was in charge of arrangements.
