They may have come from a land down under, but they played above the rim.
Despite that, Twin Valley managed to overcome the tall and athletic team from Australia to win its own tournament, defeating the HSE Bandicoots, 56-53, in the finals of the Coalfield Clash, Saturday night at TVHS.
Tournament MVP Garrett Horne tossed in 19 points, including a pair of key fourth-quarter buckets for the Panthers. Matthew Baldwin (16) and Hunter Simpson (13) also scored in double figures for Twin Valley.
Twin Valley (7-2) took the lead for good with a 9-1 run at the end of the first half. The Panthers extended that 29-22 halftime lead to nine points on several occasions in the second half.
Stewart Murray tossed in 14 points and got HSE within 47-44 on a three-pointer with 5:30 remaining and a bucket by Quint Steindl got the Bandicoots within 51-49 with 50 seconds left.
Horne, who scored 13 second-half points, scored on consecutive possessions in the final minutes and Josh Smith added a bucket inside with 43 seconds left for the Panthers.

Billiter Scores 69 Points in Three Games for Grundy

J.I. Burton got three chances to beat Grundy and the third time was the charm.
The Raiders sent the Golden Wave into the consolation bracket of the Greenwave Classic in Clintwood with a 75-61 win over Grundy Wednesday at Howard Deel Gymnasium.
Grundy, which one of three games in the Clintwood tournament, had defeated Burton each of the previous two weeks.
On Thursday, a shorthanded Wave squad fell to Northwood, 66-60. n Friday’s seventh-place game, Cody Billiter scored 31 points, and Colby Raines hit the game-winning shot with seven seconds remaining in overtime, as Grundy picked up an 89-88 win over Tri-Cities (Tenn.) Christian.

Haysi Wins Two of Three Games in Coal Classic

Haysi won two out of three games in the Coal Classic at Appalachia, but had to settle for fifth place in the tournament.
The Tigers lost to Rye Cove, 50-40, in a first round game Wednesday. Haysi bounced back to beat J.J. Kelly, 46-39, Thursday and earned its second win of the tourney and its second win of the year over arch-rival Council, 49-42 on Friday afternoon.

Freshmen Matt Boyd (15 points) and Travis Viers (10) led a 17-3 run as Council (3-5) got within 44-42 on a bucket inside by another freshman, Shane Presley, with 1:16 remaining.

Rebels Win Two of Three Games in Coalfield Clash

It was déjà vu all over again for Hurley, but in a good way.

Hurley defeated the Cavaliers, 64-35, Friday evening, and scored the same number of points in a 64-46 victory over Holston on Saturday.
The Rebels opened tournament play with a 70-54 loss to Graham Wednesday evening at TVHS.
